Never had an issue with suspension of disbelief.

I'd rather have a setup be followed through and pay off in the drama instead of a story trying to be as realistic as it can be. I'm in it for the drama and story, not whether it could happen in the real world, or the entire science behind the girl's affliction. It just is a non issue to me.

Much anime is over-the-top nonsense. This anime is the opposite, being presented in the subdued, artful manner employed in some of the best Japanese movie-making. ("Tokyo Story", directed by Yasujirō Ozu comes to mind.)

The reviewer is alive to the special charm of this unique anime, and expresses his appreciation of it in some very good writing, e.g.:

Saki… well, Saki's special. She's a chronically easygoing slip of a girl with a memory like a sieve, bursting with careless, lackadaisical charisma and hard-earned acceptance of her own shortcomings. (Her goal in life is to marry a responsible person because she knows from long experience that she can't take care of herself.) She's a light unto herself.


I'll be following Carl Kimlinger's reviews with special interest from now on.
