Answerman - High On Life

Very interesting Answerman this week.

The subject of going back and dubbing a show made me think about Loveless.

Still, I'm ever so happy when companies decide there is a reason to dub a show that was sub-only previously.

Speaking of Media Blasters, they were going to release the Riki-Oh anime on DVD, but that's still a VHS-only affair in Japan.

I doubt that they would release it now given that they are on life support to still exist. I am waiting for their Ladies vs. Butlers dub (but why use a studio that is noted for its anime porn dubs?).

Sentai Filmworks did it with a handful of their early titles.

Not just hentai, the studio also dubbed Loveless. And while I never heard the Loveless dub, it has to be better than the "professional" ones done for Kanokon and the new one on Kashimashi which were on the south side of bad.

The redubbing question as well as the "dub or not to dub" part is more prominent in Sentai's case; They're not just redubbing shows from four or five years ago, they've now rereleasing shows from the previous year as well as the same year. It would seem to me that they found an "undiscovered" market or maybe a new income source. Or they're just going "D'Oh!" a lot...

A handful? You must very large hands ... with lots of fingers. Both Maria Holics, Mayo Chiki, SA, both Clannads, Sunday Without God, Nyankoi, Maid Sama, Chuunbiyo... I feel I'm forgetting two.

But even before that, why dub Shining Bread or Little Girl Who's Kind of Italian and the Men Who May Love Her over Love Snafu or {Chuunbiyo got a redo even before being done, Sunday Without God... oh} Down With Humanity? They just have very poor planning... or coin tosses.

Tears to Tiara. That's it. Needless. Uh, wait, that's not one. Oh right, they're part of the "We'll do a dub when we do a complete collection" list and doesn't count.

On the Media Blasters side, I know good ol' Dokuro-chan wound up getting a dub after its initial sub-only release. I kept on waffling on that until it finally went OOP on RightStuf and now goes for some loltastic amount on Amazon, but I couldn't really bring myself to actually own it.

Sundays Without God was simulcast as streamed subbed by Sentai, but it never had a subonly physical release. The half sets of Needless were dubbed in English from the get go.
