The way American parents are (in that they aren't really parents anymore), it'd be a good idea to keep the restriction set at purchase. (Let's keep in mind that Nintendo markets their products here to those of the ages that this restriction would be intended for.) I'm so over hearing people complain about their kids getting into bad content because of the product they're using instead of blaming their child and/or actually doing something to prevent it.

It's not the cost, it's the principle of the thing. This isn't the kind of thing you enable by default. You provide parental controls if you want, but don't force consumers to pay to disable it. That's absolutely unheard of.
How would you like it if your internet provider disabled content and charged you to remove that block? You would absolutely be complaining as well.

Well, Nintendo has to do SOMETHING to idiot-proof things lest incompetent, sue-happy people get offended.

I can understand why Nintendo is doing this, if people want to watch porn on the go, get a Vita or a smartphone if you want to watch it.

true but I honestly think this has do with laws in japan considering content filters on electronic devices. Remember that cellphones have restrictions on them as well that parents can have removed.

I understand but when this new 3DS come out in US, Europe, etc.. Will the same content filter be carried over to those version. That's my point of my previous post.

At this point it's wait and see, i'm not going to be upset over this until nintendo even announces plans for a release for new 3ds in the west.

Do any of you actually even use the browser on your 3DS? It's pretty bad anyway. This is still pretty shameful though. Not because of the cost, but because of the morality behind it. Like a previous commenter said, it should be the other way around. Pay to install a content filter, not to disable it.

It requires a credit card, I don't like using a credit card for verification for gaming services on consoles, I never trusted the security for any of them. Besides, I couldn't use one if I imported a N3DS since it doesn't accept foreign credit cards. |
Actually... My Japanese 3DS accepts my American debit card just fine. If it can accept a debit card, I think it would be fine with a credit card as well.
