As with any sequel you do need a degree of knowledge of pre-established characters. In particular how the Nanoha/Vivio parent/child relationship came to be. But a wiki crawl should be sufficient for that. For the most part it does focus on new characters and plots mostly unrelated to past seasons, so it shouldn't be too hard for a newcomer.

The series really doesn't go to far into the past plotlines I think it'd be okay to jump into the series from here. You'd be missing context on the returning characters but their pasts don't really play into anything so I don't think it's necessary viewing for this

I like it so far. The character designs will take some getting used to, but nothing major. It's odd seeing the numbers as regular teenage girls. how often do the other StrikerS characters show up?

The Nakajimas are a constant presence. Nanoha shows up more than Fate does, but both are absent for long periods of time.

Well, finally watched this yesterday. Not too much to say yet since really nothing happened yet. The art is a little meh, I agree, but then again I don't have too high of expectations for this one knowing the manga and all, so I can deal with it.

The one thing that surprised me was Corona's voice. From the manga I picked her more as a toned-down Alisa-type and not THIS soft-spoken.

Yes, you can for the most part. You'll likely not get some references and character backstories but it's managable.

The question should rather be... Do you want to bother with this as your first experience into the franchise? No. Vivid is definitely not the best example of Nanoha quality. In large it's more service for the fans who want more stories in the same universe. Compared to the original seasons this is fairly uneventful Slice of Life with action bits, ancient history exploration (which you may not get as a newcomer) and altogether rather laidback. The first season, especially the first two always had a somewhat sad/tragic quality/element mixed into it, Vivid for the most just goes on with no real threat to the characters or such. The general feel and mood is rather different.

In short Vivid is not exactly a good representation and not the best start to get into the franchise.

Episode 1

Well I am a Nanoha fanboy, so I quite liked this, became a huge fan of the first three seasons. But rather than just Nanoha I think it was Fate I really liked as I got figure of her, and getting those random toy things I got a Yuuno and two versions of Fate, but I really wanted a transformed Nanoha. Would I say Lyrical Nanoha fanboy?

Anyway, thoughts on what happened. This franchise has never really had that great animation, and I have not felt that it was too much of a negative, it gets what is important across. And I would say that it feels like what is on par with the rest of the series. I could quickly tell that they had Fate's VA sing the OP and Nanoha's VA sing the ED, which is pretty much the same with every other season.

@ Key
Don't know how much is needed to be known from previous season's. Maybe mostly know that Fate and Nanoha started out as enemies and ended up.... close? Anyway, Fate being the nice one while Nanoha as the stricter one is kind of ironic with their initial relationship, but she does seem to share similar traits despite only being adoptive mothers.

Eh, I guess you could describe Nanoha as the "stricter" parent but only in comparison to Fate. Fate would be a total helicopter mom if her kids weren't off planet and she wasn't busy working all the time. Nanoha is solidly in the authoritative camp. As you can see this episode she's very friendly with Vivio and allows her to have her adult mode, but at the same time she sets down some reasonable rules for her daughter to follow.

I think the defining moment was that scene in StrikerS when Vivio fell down. Nanoha told her to get up herself, while Fate wanted to rush over and help her up.

Oh, and this is a pretty important detail for people just jumping on: Vivio is essentially a clone of Jesus.

First off, Dusky Predator, I think we'll get along just fine, considering I am just as much a Nanoha fanboy (evident that I rewatch the series every half year regularly... Anime smile).

Anyway, Episode 2. I think it was pretty solid. I mean I am definitely not going to get too hyped over the material knowing what it is but...

I think, I'll just post what I just typed up for my blog comments:

spoiler[Einhart is so kawai! ... Okay, had to get that out. Personally I think Einhart is pulling the story of Vivid more than Vivio herself, so I was looking forward to this episode and her first real appearance. I think her voice matches well. The fight was okay. It will take some time to get used to mostly hand-to-hand combat compared to MGLN usual flair for impressive magic blasts but there is still room left. All in all... I can live with it. A first for me though: I've liked every single Nanoha song from Mizuki-sama but I may, for the first time, actually pass on this one. While there is a chance it might still grow on me, I can't say it hasn't even caught my interest remotely so far.]

Episode 2:

spoiler[Einhard]'s a cutie :3. I hope she can become friends with the others although right now, she has her own agenda...

Action seems sub-par so far imo. I mean, it's on the right track but I hope to see more of it. Fate on the other hand showed quite a bit of herself if you know what I mean lol

As expected, this adaptation is another "LOLICONS SHOULD DIE" kind of adaptation, removing all service from them, and giving them instead to the adults.
I really have to ask why do they even adapt something like this if they're just gonna ignore one of their core audience.

Maybe because some studios aren't willing to "see how far the envelop can be pushed" until the Japanese Government decides to step in and slap a studio of several years worth of budget in legal fees?

I really don't get the mentality of "I would rather have NOTHING than an adaptation that doesn't suits MY tastes" when so far the show has at least been average for an adaptation work.

If you think there's any legality issue in what has being shown in ViVid manga, {If you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all. ~nobahn}.
If that's the case they couldn't have had that shitty transformation either technically.

No, they are just making another adaptation where they shit on lolicons since they aren't into lolis so don't care about them at all.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzz- eh? Is the episode over already?

Man do I not care about Einhart's story one bit. It's been done to death already in all manner stories from fantasy to romance. It doesn't help that Vivio herself made it pretty clear last time that she doesn't want to be treated any differently because of who she was cloned from. If our own main character (supposedly, the manga always liked to focus on anything and everything except Vivio, sure are taking after your mom on that one ain't ya) doesn't care why the heck should I? And that's ignoring the fact that frankly Vivio, Einhart and any other Belkan emperor should not exist in this time period because the Book of Darkness presumably ate the planet.

I'm not a fan of Einhart's voice either she sounds too mature for a 12-year old but that's just me.

The action is kinda lacking at the moment. There were no real tactics or choreography just quick cuts between attacks. I imagine they have no budget considering how much A-1 stretches itself every season and that's really gonna cut down on the only thing I would enjoy.

The score sounds like generic video game music too. The scene of Vivio jogging in the part I feel like she should have been looking for an item shop while screaming about how her minimap sucks

I would prefer not to have literal child pornography in my anime thanks very much. I am willing to overlook petite girls in anime but I draw my line at actual children, and yes I was bugged by Vivio's transformation, hell I was bugged by the nudey transformations in the movies too.

{Do not insult others. ~nobahn}

Anyways, the manga has has a lot of tasteful lolicon fanservice, and the anime removing it is a disgusting move. This is supposed to be a god damn adaptation. But if they remove it, then don't give us Fate either.
