The problem with Japanese tv is that they air the majority anime late at night and that must suck

It may have something to do with content, imagine showing Fate/Zero at 18:00 and some kid switching it on and seeing a woman being straggled to death. |

Man that's a low ranking. I guess Sazae-san is like the equivalent of the Simpsons. But that show is muuuuuch older.

I doubt it. In the past, many anime with content deemed too adult for western standards aired during prime-time. In fact, although it's been toned down in recent years, Detective Conan still has people getting strangled or shot. It's most likely due to the way anime was and is now consumed. Up until the early 00s, mainstream anime could pull in huge ratings with a lot of them airing in prime-time. Nowadays, outside the top 6, an anime will be lucky to hit 8%. With the declining ratings, television channels have chosen to air others things in those time-slots relegating most anime to late-night slots (where they rely on DVD/blue-ray sales). Top viewer ratings for each decade (one show = one spot max) : 1980s 38.6% Sazae san 36.9% Dr.slump arare chan 33.6% Japanese folk tales 31.9% Touch 31.6% Ashita no jo (re airing) 31.2% Doraemon 29.6% Gegege no kitaro 29.5% Dragon ball 28.2% Kyojin no hoshi 28.0% Ninja hattori kun 1990s 39.9% Chibi maruko chan (1990 show) : all-time record for anime beating the previous 39.4% record set by Sazae-san in 1979. 36.4% Sazae san 28.2% Crayon shin chan 27.5% Dragon ball z 26.4% Chibi maruko chan (1995 show) 25.7% Kiteretsu dai hyakka 24.7% Yu yu hakusho 24.3% Doraemon 23.7% Tsuyoshi shikkari shinasai 2000s 28.1% Sazae-san 22.1% Detective Conan 21.0% Chibi Maruko chan 18.1% Kochi kame 17.9% Inuyasha 17.2% One Piece 16.9% Doraemon 16.8% Kindaichi case files 16.4% Crayon Shin chan 14.9% Pokemon 2010s 24.7% Sazae san 17.0% Chibi maruko chan 13.9% One Piece 13.1% Doraemon 12.6% Detective Conan 12.5% Crayon Shin chan 12.3% Dragon ball kai As you can see, the top rating of the 2010s doesn't even make the 80s list and barely enters the 90s list. And things have kept on worsening in the last 5 years. Also, no show except 'Chibi Maruko-chan (1990)' has ever beaten Sazae-san in the decade ratings. |
