Someone that actually understands the series should be doing the review :\

Giving an okay grade to an okay episode signifies a lack of understanding? Or is it just the fact that her views differ from your own?

Bless you, seriously! (But like.. that's every single freakin review this site does). I'm not saying that Gintama is great all the time, there are definitely episode/chapters where I just tune out *cough* mostly Hasegawa and Sa-chan crap for me, but I'm sure everyone has his own likes or dislikes*, but the Yamazaki/Tama stuff is a really nice thing that many actual fans of the manga love, and the episode adapted it really well.

The episode was exactly from the manga, and it was something many fans were really confused about why it was omitted from the previous season (because it comes earlier in the story). Thank goodness it was animated, I was personally upset they left it out last time, thinking that maybe the anime staff really just did not like Yamazaki as much as Sorachi does not like him. But, in general, the story plays so well to Yamazaki's ridiculously obsessive behaviors, and is a nice extension of the two main things that make him- the an-pan/tama-san joke and the fact that he is absolutely nothing and abused all the time. Place him with all of the main characters of the show (not just the Shinsengumi, but Yorozuya as well, which rarely happens) it is nice to see this dynamic brought out even further with the sadistic minds of Gintoki, Kagura, and even Shinpachi who just gets heightened in comparison to Yamazaki's lameness. Does that make sense? I don't know. It was both a great chapter and nicely adapted, in my opinion, but I'm not on staff here, so clearly I'm wrong and don't understand the anime as well as a Young Adult Fantasy author would...

People, people--relax.

Remember in school? Bs were still above average? Cs were even still good? A grade in the B range means it is STILL GOOD.

Not every episode is going to get an A++++. Reviewers don't operate that way.

Congrats. This is the nastiest comment I've seen on an ANN board to date - and that says something. At no point did Amy use her credentials as a reviewer or YA author to imply that her take on the episode was in any way superior to anyone else's, so your meanness is wholly unwarranted. You explained why you enjoyed the episode - which was fine, but that little jab was just rude.

This behavior is all too common on The AV Club, ANN and other review-heavy websites. A reviewer gives an episode a less-than-perfect grade and is promptly accused of not understanding that series. Because nothing denotes true fandom like blind obedience, right? I guess I missed the part where you were named Gintama's official gatekeeper and charged with judging how well other people understood the series.

This weeks episode cracked me so much, not seeing it in awhile I hadn't forgotten why I liked it so much.

I didn't expect that full-on Koro-sensē cameo (it might be a wink to the game J-Stars Victory Vs, and that Sugita Tomokazu, Gintama's seiyū, plays in Ansatsu Kyōshitsu as well). Also, if Gintama's To Love-Ru Ho Love-Ru is serialized in Young Jump, it might be closer to porn [SFW] than our world's counterpart. Laughing

So did Seita leave his cushy job at the adult toy store to focus on his education - or was he unceremoniously fired after inadvertently assaulting that poor man with the shop's wares?

I agree with all the points made about the second segment, although it would have been cool to see Zenzou get in on the action. HoLoveRu is his favorite manga, after all.

Most likely his mom and Tsukuyo wanted him to have some form of an education that didn't involve how to properly handle dildos or other sex related wares. He is the sun of the Yoshiwara women after all. I'm super surprised neither Hijikata (who's VA was Date from Sengoku Basara) or Kondo (the resident Gorilla) didn't cameo once.

Best part was Gintoki's logic of "hiding porn in plain sight" ended with Shinpachi 'riding the wooden horse' (they love their BDSM humor). Laughing

Same here! I know they've made SB references in the past, but this was a prime opportunity for one.

I took it as the studio winking at Sugita Tomokazu, who voiced Katō Kiyomasa in the show Sengoku Musō, which aired last Season.

I laughed so hard at Gintoki "tutoring" Seita and Shinpachi. I really hope we get more Ginpachi-sensei sooner or later. Those after-credits in the first seasons were so awesome.

At this point, there are enough Ginpachi-sensei light novels to fill several anime story arcs.

Much better episode. Even the first half, while I was scratching my head because I'm not that familiar with Japan history, it's still much better in pacing, delivery and development, you can follow the development of the bullshit they are making up. But the second one was hilarious. I guess the peak for me was when they show the birthday celebrations and the different characters (except Shinpachi) appear moved by it Laughing

Shinpachi's birthday celebration sucked because no one showed up. Literally everyone else on Earth had a better birthday.
Funny stuff. I always love Tsukuyo (except for the arc about her master, which I basically skipped).

I'd call myself a casual Gintama fan these days. I used to love it more, before I realized the serious arcs would probably never add up to a meaningful conclusion. Then the boke/tsukkomi humor started to fall flat for me--it bothered me both that Shinpachi was the butt of every joke and his annoying screeching. But I still like the characters and the show can be a lot of fun in both its funny and serious moments, so I pick and choose some episodes and arcs. I'll probably be stalking this board so I'll know which eps to watch.

*I know some people might get mad that I've skipped eps and arcs of Gintama, so I'll apologize if it offends you, but really, watching TV should never be an obligation, so I don't feel *that* guilty.
