So, my roommate and I were talking about how, when you're searching in a library catalog (specifically, the library system she works for), it can be hard to tell what is a manga and what is a light novel, especially when the title is practically the same. They're trying to push for a different designation for graphic novels in the catalog, but it got me curious as to which titles are available in both formats in the US.

Therefore, we have this thread! I want to try to get a list of which titles a) are available in the US in both formats, and b) have both formats in existence, and while only one or the other available in the US, it (and/or the anime version) is popular enough that there's a good chance the other will be licensed.

Please list the title, format, and publisher for both versions. If it's published under an imprint, please list both. If the manga and light novel versions are published by different companies, please list which is which. Also be sure to include titles where the manga or light novel are just side-stories, and not full adaptations.

Titles available in both manga and light novel format
A Certain Magical Index [Manga|Light Novel] (Yen Press/Yen On)
Accel World [Manga|Light Novel] (Yen Press/Yen On)

Dirty Pair [American Comics|Light Novel] (Dark Horse Comics)
Durarara!! [Manga (arc 1)|Manga (Saika Arc)|Manga (Yellow Scarves Arc)|Light Novel] (Yen Press/Yen On)

Pandora Hearts~ [Manga|Light Novel (subtitled Caucus Race)] (Yen Press/Yen On)
Scrapped Princess [Manga|Light Novel] (Tokyopop)

Strawberry Panic! [Manga|Light Novel] (Seven Seas)
Sword Art Online [Manga (Aincrad)|Manga (Fairy Dance)|Light Novel] (Yen Press/Yen On)
Sword Art Online: Progressive [Manga|Light Novel] (Yen Press/Yen On)

Notes
*First edition novel under the All You Need is Kill title, second edition novel under the Edge of Tomorrow title
**I am not including any of the further KH manga until/unless light novels for those are licensed
^I'm including the Anime Comics because they also have the same title
~While the LN does have a different title, if you don't know that there is a LN, you'd think it's just a side manga, which is why it's included on this list

Dirty Pair might be a possibility.
Two translated novels and a few graphic novels were published by Dark Horse.
The graphic novels were not manga, but my library does not make any distinction between manga and other graphic novels.

^
I just discovered that I also have two Love Hina novels.
The second one was hidden behind something else.
Now I guess that I should try actually reading them.

I edited my first post to remove the comment about only one novel.

The top post has been updated and formatted. Gotta figure out a way to list the Dirty Pair links a) in order, and b) so that you can see they're separate links, without having to take up so much space by listing them separately (it's 5 links, which is a little more than the 3 I did for Drrr!!)

Other things that I'm just noting here to be added:

Vampire Hunter D (manga: Digital Manga Publishing; Novels: Dark Horse)
Guin Saga (Vertical)
Gundam 00 (I think both were Bandai?)
Vampire Knight (Viz)
Slayers (Tokyopop for the novels, and I think it was CPM for the manga?)
Brave Story (Tokyopop for the manga, I think Viz put out the novel?)

Things I'm uncertain if I should add (need opinions)
the .hack//[insert here] manga and light novels (all are part of one story, but unless you know, it's hard to tell which are manga and which are LN)
CLAMP School: Detectives and Defenders are manga, Paranormal Investigators is light novel

@ Dessa

It might be worth noting that the Viz release of Chibi Vampire is digital only and, at least so far, seems to be just the manga and not the novels.

Also, and this is picking the proverbial nit, Full Metal Panic! was released by ADV Manga, which is a different label from ADV Films.

EDIT: Corrected a typo.

re: Chibi Vampire: I'll keep that in mind for future edits, but I think, right now, the idea is to get stuff onto the list, rather than worrying about format (especially since some of the novels on my "to do" list have both paperback and hardcover versions). I only made the note about editions for AYNiK because they changed the name to match the movie. And I've only got Viz noted for the manga

re: FMP: oops. I'll fix that next update. I never even realized they used two different names. And I have a few volumes of that and all of Chrno Crusade, too!

I would add .hack and the CLAMP stuff, personally. Never hurts to have too much information.

Also, not really a "light" novel but perhaps should be included anyway: Battle Royale
Manga (Tokyopop, 2 editions)/Novel (Viz)
Side story manga (Viz - Subtitled Angel's Border)

I don't know if you'd want to include it because of franchise vs series title issues, but I just remembered the Alice in the Country of Diamond: Bet on My Heart LN from Seven Seas, who also publish 99% of the manga adaptations, with one from Yen Press, Alice in the Country of Hearts: My Fanatic Rabbit.

Yen Press also rereleased the original Alice in the Country of Hearts manga after Tokyopop kicked the bucket and left it unfinished.
