I went to one of my friends' house the other day, and he showed me some artwork by Shirow Masamune that didn't seem like your typical Ghost in the Shell type stuff. Shocked There seemed to be two titles to it, Galhound and Wet Wild Quest. ALthough the artwork was pretty good to say the least, if you know what I mean. Wink Would anybody know about this kind of artwork from this author or would anybody care to elaborate?

Shirow Masamune is an artist of many talents. His graphic design and technical drawing ability goes outside the world of just anime and manga as he is know in professional circles for his ability to illustrate fine details with almost uncanny precision. But he is also a master of illustrating the human figure, especially sexy women. I think extremely talented artists like him don't let their art go to waste by being restricted by moral standards and notions of decency.

He and other character illustrators like Satoshi Urushihara and I think even Kenichi Sonoda have made names for themselves in the more sexually explicit realms of the artform. After all the Japanese are less stigmatic about the nude human form than us Westerners. They view the nude human body as a natural thing, it's just that genitals and penetration can't be shown in any legal Japanese modern art.

Woohoo! my :3:3:3'rd post!! Wink

I picked up a Satoshi Urushihara artbook a while back at AWA, and as I was flipping through it, I was thinking "Wow, these are really good character desi--oh hello nudity, how are you?" Urushihara's done everything from the Langrisser/Growlanser video game series to the highly pornographic hentai series Front Innocent. I'm sure Shirow dabbled quite a bit in the realm of ero.

Urushihara is much more well known with his nude girls. I've got a set of famous girls from different anime but all drawn by him, mimicking the originals yet still quite evident that he redrew them.

The Suiseiseki-Souseiseki he did was awesome. I was also impressed by his Asuka.

Check out the four amazing Intron Depot books for some gorgeous (mature) artwork. The text in these books is in English and they are huge. I believe they are cheaper if you buy them from Japan (I think HLJ has them) since they are 2333-2800 Yen which is much cheaper (about half the price) than the $50 listed price printed in English. My copy of the first book is slightly smaller, cheaper and doesn't have the Dark Horse Studio Proteus logo on the back. Was it ever reissued in the larger size? It's not a big deal since I'm probably not going to rebuy it if this is the case, but I was just curious if there was a newer edition of volume one out there.

That's one of the dumbest laws I've ever heard of.

Maybe, but it's been in effect since either the 70s or 80s and still goes on to this day. I hear they're trying to reform it though.

Still, censoring pornography is just strange. Just what the hell were they smoking?

The artwork that you've seen is from Shirow's Galgrease series of illustrations, that IIRC are a series of works he did for the Japanese magazine Uppers KC(?). There are 6 poster books available titled as follows;

Wild Wet West (cowboy themed)
Wild Wet Quest (Tomb Raider-like)
Gallhound (sci-fi cops)
Hellhound (horror themed)
Hellcat I & II (pirate themed)

These poster books in turn are nothing more than 'teasers' for the two series of trading card collections that come under the Galgrease banner, as each poster book comes with a sealed pack of trading cards. I managed to acquire a near complete set of the first series of trading cards (missing some of the ultra rares) & the artwork is amazing though they are very ecchi, bordering on hentai in some cases.

Shirow is my favourite manga artist, & I have alot of his work, both the mundane (such as his manga works) & his ecchi stuff too. Anime smile + sweatdrop
