"it would be impossible to make [a 70-year-old] a character. Their boobs aren't full anymore. To draw a pearl diver cutely, you need this much exhibition."
You killed me.
But, since all the pearl divers there are old, then yes, the mascot should be something more modest and a bit older, it doesn't has to be a 70 year old mascot, neither it has to be female. One at the fifties is good enough.

Or even if it is young, it could at least look/feel like an individual who could actually exist instead of stereotypical desirable waifubait.

Still don't understand some of the comments made by the residents...but I understand their disapproval. My only guess is, if they drew her in one of those wetsuits, it would look even more erotic. Unless, you know, they really do draw a 70+ year old character lol. That would be pretty interesting...maybe.

Most of us foreigners would probably have never even heard of this tradition without the cute new mascot debate.
Not saying I'd lose interest if they ditch the cute moé girl, but love her or hate her, she did her job.

This kind of reminds of when that Rajan Zed complained about how Kali was being portrayed as being pornographic in Smite when she is actually often depicted even more extreme in Hindu artwork than her Smite version.

I get the point that the character doesn't accurately reflect the average pearl diver, but mascots are usually more for drawing in the first place in an effort to get people to look closer at an area/occupation/whatever. Like the designer said, he was trying to get young people's attention, and a drawing of an old lady would probably have the opposite effect. My guess would be that such a drawing would not inspire younger folks to try to revive the tradition, and would more likely make them ignore it as a job for old people.

Her character bio sounds like something aimed at lonely young men, who are in for disappointment when they arrive at the harbor with their binoculars.

Quote: | In reality, the average pearl diver is 70 years old and look quite different from Aoshima. Black wetsuits are the norm. A pearl diver's husband also points out that she wouldn't be able to dive with her long hair either. |
If they want to take issue with the design, then that's their right (I think that's silly considering MOST of the images for the character, but whatever), but arguing about the "character vs. reality" thing is STUPID. The character was created to promote tourism and interest, something that the REALITY obviously hasn't been doing. You know what else is COMPLETELY unrealistic a "cat stationmaster" for a train station. That is quite frankly an insult to any HUMAN stationmaster that has ever held the job by proving the old saying that "an animal could do your job". But you know what has made a TON of money for a small community that wasn't seeing any tourism? a CAT stationmaster.
That said, there are now a ton of cute girl mascots, I don't know that one more is all that great as a promotional tool at this point. A more cynical person might ponder if the city council encouraged the "outrage" because that's certainly helped get attention to the promotion.

I said this at the last thread about this topic. What works in Akihabara doesn't necessarily also work in Shima, or anywhere else outside of Akihabara. The further away one goes from metropolitan culture, the slower traditional culture changes towards it, if at all.

One of things you learn about the art world is that "Depiction of the subject (real or imagined) is subject to the artist's interpretation". Basically, the artist can depict something as he/she chooses, it doesn't have to be realistic.

In Daisuke Igarashi's manga Children of the Sea, main character Ruka's gorgeous young mom was trained as an ama, and the author made sure to point out that she dived nude.
Not that I'm disagreeing with the residents of Shima's complaints. If they're so against a young, sexualised moe girl ama trainee mascot, the mascot designers should try a cute animal design (a cutesy clam with a pearl in its shell, perhaps?) Or even a cute, personified pearl.

Perhaps both sides could agree to a compromise? Redesigning the character wouldn't hurt I think. Such as trimming her hair and actually dressing her up in current ama attire.

I think if they just made her chibi to start with it wouldn't have been this poorly received.
I also like the idea of a cute animal mascot.

There is no reason to compromise. The work was completed as ordered, and approved by the town council. Also, they already made some changes because of the complaints. Any further redesign work needs to be paid for.
But honestly, the nature of the complaints seem to indicate that they wanted something that is more realistic to represent them. Perhaps a talking oyster.
The animator did a fantastic job, and didn't deserve all the hate and depraved accusations that were thrown his way. Can't really blame the town council either, how were they to know that the pearl divers weren't interested in getting the younger generation interested in pearl diving or the town.
