Myriad Colors Phantom World (TV) Genres: Supernatural Themes: Plot Summary:

I've been curious about this since it doesn't have many volumes but still has a premise that sparks some potential in terms of its story. Expecting some supernatural action from it and some good visual quality. The soundtrack could be a hit or miss though but hey, it can be some imaginative fun

Episode 1:
Hmm.... From what I got, the Phantoms are actually real (originally thought this was some chunnibyou type of show). And anyways, the comedy is pretty generic although funny in a way. The OP song is catchy and we see how Mai fights those Phantoms. I want to know more about that headphone girl though. She seems like the quite and cold type so yeah. Courtesy of Kyoto Animation, the artwork is pretty good. I'll stick around for more. OP song is catchy as well. |

Well, it went as I expected, I suppose? Not exactly a good thing, though. The comedy is terrible, but being a comedy light novel adaptation it's par for the course. The pacing at the very least made sure that the jokes don't linger enough to make the whole thing awful, by which I mean the episode feels like it's going so fast it broke its breaks. Animation is good as usual for the studio but I also didn't feel there was anything extraordinary in it. Some cool CG effects, I guess. Will keep watching for a while but not very enthusiastic about it. |

Can I say show of the season already? KyoAni always have the knack of making everything they touch turn to gold. The art style and animation reminds me of Amaburi which was fantastic and just an utter joy to watch. I like all the characters already. Mai is just so fun, bubbly and pretty fanservicey but without getting all embarrased about it. Reina is quiet, cute and has this cool phantom sucking ability. Ichijo's 'supporting role' was done well and I especially liked the scene where he attempted to get out of the Reina situation by grabbing his hand, only to end up in a worst position. I can't wait to see more of Koito's coolness next episode. I've been looking forward to this for some time, so all I can hope is that the quality can hold up for the entire series. As usual with KyoAni, that will hopefully be the case. |

episode one
I wasn't expecting so much fanservice. In retrospect, this was very stupid since I was well aware it was based on a light novel. I'm holding on to a glimmer of hope that the show isn't as generic as it initially appears. In particular, I'm hoping the vague description of how the world came to be filled with phantoms and odd details like Haruhiko waking up to an initially voxelized room are not just style elements but hints that there will be more to the story. Mostly, I just really want to like the show because it's so pretty. |

This is the first time I'm watching simulcast anime. I checked this out as it was one of the first winter shows available. I'm not sure if I will keep watching this one but I'll give it another episode or two. On the down side it looks like boob jokes ahoy; limbo-dancing utility poles were a plus though.

Voxelized? Anyway, I liked that as well, but as I said in the preview guide, "I took it to be a reflection of the idea that our perceptions of the world change depending on how we look at things. Harkening back to the introductory examples, his view of the world doesn't solidify until he focuses on an object. Until then, things are just vaguely perceived sets of colors that only reveal their true nature when he really looks at them (their actual reality remains unchanged, as seen when he reached out to grab his uniform). This could have been done with wavy shapes or smears of color or any number of other ways that suggest that the world is a parade of optical illusions, but since they began with the classic examples of squares that seem to change color depending on the colors next to them, they just stayed with that." If you've watched a lot of Brain Games, you know that a great deal of what we think is in the world is actually our brain filling in the gaps so that we don't have to attend to every detail in our environment equally (we'd go crazy from the constant flood of information). I think the premise here is that this virus changed how their brains process all the info their senses receive, and his vague awareness of things when his mind hadn't yet fully engaged on waking, is represented by the mosaic forms his brain is using as placeholders until it wakes up enough to focus and fill in all the gaps with actual received information. He said he'd explain it more later, so I hope he doesn't forget. 
@ Stark: Yeah, the phantoms are real, and apparently, like kami, the more humans believe in them, the more power it gives them, so where before they could just get up to some minor mischief, now that humans can perceive them, they can do things like attack the school and have limbo parties. |

You said pretty much everything I wanted to say on the topic. Human perception is a really interesting topic where you can be mighty surprised about the difference between an unchanging photo with defined characteristics, and how humans understand what they see. It was interesting that we saw the world as being pixelated and slowly turning into defined images as he became more alert or interacted with them. I can't say what its point might be unless the show is expecting some payoff on the fallibility of perception, like we might see something on the screen he is perceiving as one thing, but then show us he was incorrect. Thinking about a show highlighting perception, what comes to mind is some of what Shaft does, where to some extent images are highly symbolic, especially in Monogatari which loves to change focus depending on the state of mind of the protagonist. The first episode this did not feel like my favourite of the genre, or of KyoAni, but it reminded me of something like Beyond the Boundary, which I ended up greatly enjoying despite being unsure early on. BtB also did some good work in my opinion in changing how I saw events after I got different information, so it might be that they are planning something like that. Not too interested in the fanservice, we don't really watch KyoAni for that sort of thing, they tend to do "fanservice" in a different way (not just focus on boobs). And kind of on that, based off the first episode it looks like Reina got a crush on Mai on calling her Onee-san. Really KyoAni has been teasing possibility of characters who are girls who like girls for some time: Tsumugi, Dekomori, that god damn most romantic scene they have done from Hibike Euphonium, and going for guy on guy the entirety of Free. They never seem to have the guts to come out and say a character has a preference different from the norm. But I guess they did have Midori in Tamako Market. |

Well... weird.
School life meets fantasy x bishoujo. Feels like a bunch of different anime in one. Was fun at certain points. Has potential, but still waiting for something different. |

KyoAni shows are a hit-or-miss for me (because I have this very stupid reason of disliking their character designs even though it's pretty; every character's face looks about the same in most KyoAni shows).
That aside, I think I'll start with the negatives here. Firstly, they find a way to insert fanservice into any scene. I mean, it's nice for me, but I find it a bit distracting. Second, the whole exposition scene at the cafeteria had me groaning because I didn't like the way it was handled -- he's talking to Izumi and then starts going off by dumping exposition onto us even though he's clearly talking to Izumi. What I don't particularly like about this scene is just how infodumpy it is and why he feels the need to explain to Izumi when she's a student of his school which sort of specializes in phantom hunting. But I guess this is me being nitpicky so I'll get over it. Onto the positives, as expect of KyoAni, the show has very vibrant colors and good animation. It's a fun watch once I got rid of the annoyances I had with it. Characters wise, Mai has a rockin' body so I like that. Izumi is best girl. The little flying genie thingmabob is okay so far but normally I'd find these types annoying but I've been tolerant as of late. I'm not sure about how I feel about the MC because he's a personified trope of the walking encyclopedia; he just knows everything and serves as a catalyst to explain stuff to us. I mean, if I were watching this show critically (which I don't think I am), I'd feel annoyed but as of now he has not crossed the annoyance line. |

Pretty standard KyoAni show so far. And I generally like KyoAni shows so no issues there.
Japan sure seems to like it, since there's tons of Mai hentai flooding Pixiv after just one episode. While most KyoAni shows do pretty well on the porn front (even stuff like Hyouka and Nichijou have a decent amount) it definitely seems like it'll be joining Amagi Brilliant Park on the very high end of things. |

Unlike Sento though, Mai seems to have a fun personality. She doesn't really seem to care about being exposed, like how she was fighting the phantom skirtless without letting that embarrass her. So far, I like her. She's a cool big sister type and feels like she'd be a good leader.
Reina is incredibly cute. My friends have already starting calling her "Kirby". I wonder if anything will happen between Reina and Haruhiko...that would be my potential ship.
