Quote: | While this show doesn't feature as strong a supporting cast as the concurrently-airing Tanaka-kun is Always Listless, these characters work reasonably well in small doses. |
Agreed. I feel like Sakamoto's supporting players are most effectual when they're acting as foils. Whenever they try to be funny on their own, the results range from tolerable (Kubota and Acchan) to groan-inducing (Sera). (Incidentally, this was a problem I always had with Beavis and Butt-Head.) I guess this is fairly common when a show is based around a very strong character - or set of characters.
Quote: | (Still, why do Acchan and friends ultimately conclude that Hayabusa is cooler than Sakamoto? Because he's a fellow delinquent? Is it possible for Sakamoto to lose his magic hold over people?) |
This kind of bugged me, too. The group's loyalty to Sakamoto seems to fluctuate as the narrative demands. For example, I found it strange that they never attempted to warn him about the pitfall trap.
At this point, I think Sakamoto has developed some genuine affection for Kubota. Early on, I got the impression that he mostly just tolerated him (he even "playfully" insulted him several times when they were working together), but now he seems to regard him as someone deserving of his friendship. I also hope they do at least one more story that centers on Sakamoto evading the advances of Kubota's mother. That setup is too good not to revisit, and the jokes practically write themselves. It's also the closest we've come to seeing Sakamoto genuinely fearful.

I thought this episode was the strongest so far, although there were definitely things that didn't work, like Acchan and friends randomly deciding Hayabusa was the coolest, and Sera's existence as a character (seriously, does he just chill in his underpants on the reg?), and the sumo match going on way too long. Overall, though, this episode actually made me laugh out loud several times, which none of the other episodes of this show have managed, so, win.

Honestly, this is the first time in ages I've laughed this much at a comedy series. It actually manages to make me look forward to the next episode too. .

I agree that this week’s first segment is the series’ weakest offering thus far. I don’t have anything against slow-paced storytelling, but this was a little too meandering - and it really dragged in some spots. I think trimming some of this segment’s runtime in favor of tacking a few extra gags onto the pasta skit would have worked to the episode's benefit.

Him nailing Kubota with the baseball wasn't intentional part of had to do with Kubota not paying attention and Sakamoto throwing the ball a wee bit too fast.

Are you telling me that Sakamoto did something that was not entirely under his control?? With an outcome he did not foresee??? Not possible!

In the sixth episode, my interpretation was that Sakamoto created the evidence of a ghost to give the photographer a reason to tell him she was photographing him. From the very end of the episode, we saw that he can move fast enough to give people a subliminal suggestion, so even switching images to indicate different words would seem to be within his capabilities.

Actually I was a bit relieved at that. The "leader" kid was obviously building up the typical clenched-teeth rage/frustration that is the hallmark of all of Sakamoto's clients, but he got over it more easily than I thought he would.
I have been teetering on dropping this show for a couple of episodes now, most of it that I don't really like any of the characters including Sakamoto. He is (obviously deliberately) remote and just doesn't seem like much more than a stuntman pulling a cheap rabbit out of a cheap hat over and over again.
Maybe its because I have watched Lupin The 3rd too recently. Compared to that, Sakamoto just seems pretty wan. Lupin is also a freak that always comes out on top but he is far more substantial. He also benefits from having a real worthwhile opponent in Znanzznzr-whatever his hame is. Pops. That's it. Pops.

I actually really liked the kids and found their kid-ness refreshing. I mean, did we need more Sera in his underpants, or random bland girl of the week? I'd like to see more of Sakamoto interacting with randoms in the community.
That said, I'd really like to know how the school feels about Sera's interpretation of the dress code.

This doesn't really explain the runaway mop bucket and semi-sentient hair, though.

To be fair though every Lupin episode isn't Lupin vs Zenigata many episodes have Lupin vs Some Villain/Rival of the Week. Which isn't too dissimilar to what happens with Sakamoto from time to time.

Given how unlikely it is that Acchan and company would be able to plow through all that porn in 24 hours, was Sakamoto opting for the one-day rental his subtle way of sticking it to them?

Or saving them money. He probably knew they'd chicken out, so 3-day fees would've been an even bigger waste.

The show certainly felt different this week, but I suppose that's what they were going for. With only one story eating up the entire runtime, the jokes were more spaced out than usual, and Sakamoto himself only had two or three truly memorable moments. Like Amy, I'm not sure if I can fully embrace the introduction of a villain who's meant to be taken seriously.
