March comes in like a lion (TV) Genres: Comedy, Drama, Romance, Seinen, Slice of Life, Sports Themes: Shogi Plot Summary: The protagonist Rei is a 17-year old professional shōgi player, who lives by himself, not having a real family, and has scarcely any friends. Among his acquaintances is a family, which consists of a young woman, Akari, and two young girls, Hinata and Momo, and who also keep a numerous number of cats. ---------------------------------- Very excited for this series to come for Fall. The manga's storytelling has been one of very refreshing and I'm curious to see how Shaft will adapt this. From what I've heard, the show will also be 22 episodes so there's plenty to develop

Episode 1:
Ah I loved the music they used for the show already. It has this smooth vibrant feel that connects with the lighthearted atmospheric setting. The episode introduced Rei, the main guy and there's even a small glimpse of his past. I think Shaft's style works for the show despite my initial impressions of it. The comedy and realism works fine so far, really liked the family feel of the show as well. Pretty good start, can't wait for more. |

As someone who adores the artsy-fartsy and spends way too much time seeking out good films, I cannot figure out how this got rated a 5. It was dull as dirt, and didn't establish a dang plot ( unless the plot is to simply watch this sad sack move like molasses). The colors were nice, and I see that it's trying desperately to make the audience feel like they're suffocating ( how many times were we appreciating water this episode?), but damn, be even mildly entertaining. Like, is slow pacing and close ups on the environment all it takes for an anime to be called deep and engaging? Pass.

Episode 1
Yeah, I found this a bit boring. WIth seeing how highly it was rated by critics, it kind of reminds me of how I don't really care much for Your Lie in April despite how everyone loves it. My opinion changed a bit when the introduced to the family that have been looking out for him, plus the cats, I really liked the cats. |

Episode 2:
Ah another entertaining episode. I love how Shaft crafted the shogi game with the music, moves, and in general, the style. Works quite well. The creativity poured into the game made me more curious about how they will do future games. In the meantime, I like the comedy of the show so far. The narrative dialogues coming from Rei expresses his thoughts quite well and we learn more about him as a person each episode. Oh and Akari...so beautiful this episode in that dress! |

So it seems that both Rei and Akari and her sisters have lost their parents. With the girls, it seems to be a fairly recent thing. I guess that old guy Rei played last week was his grandfather or perhaps someone who took him in when his parents died.
So, Akari is a bar hostess, eh? I think I'd be going through a lot of money if I was one of her customers. |

Episode 2
A boy helps himself to Rei's mail, committing a crime. An adult man tackles or at least grapples Rei. Another adult man guilt's him into defeating the other in shogi and uses it to make the teenage boy pay for time at a bar (+ hostess). The bar hostess knowing him makes it clear the underage boy should not drink, she praises the two men, talking them up to Rei, reminding him of what is probably a traumatic event in the past to make the point that these two men are better than whatever the event was, because it was something he needed reminding of right now. At the very least she convinces one of the men to foot the bill instead. Also, clearly no one has taught Rei how to look after himself like stocking a fridge and preparing food. If one comment is to believed he does not even have toilet paper and I did not see him take any home with him at the end of the episode. |

Episode 3:
Hmm, I still like how the way they present the shogi games in this show especially with Harunobu (Bodoro) playing against Rei. I also really like the style of the backgrounds they're using especially when Rei takes the train. Very expressive. The shogi match felt more like mind games and I think Shaft did a decent job at capturing the key moments. The facial expressions are priceless and fairly well done between the two rivals. Someji is also really funny to see, best grandpa. The feels this episode as well.. |

Yes, I am glad I decided to give this title a second chance. I just wish I was energetic enough to try and learn something about shogi. Eh, maybe I'll do a little reading. I do feel like being at information zero on that topic detracts from some of the enjoyment of this show.
Also, it sounds like the girls father might be around somewhere because they seem to only refer to the grandmother and mother as being dead. |

Maybe it is just me or I was not paying enough attention before, but it felt like their was a clear drop in animation quality in the third episode. Backgrounds feel less vibrant, character models seem to have less to them, and there was one key part in the flashback of two children riding a small train that just looked off with their sizes.
I also think it that it feels a little insensitive that although characters did not say it, the word "chubby" came up a couple times with his rival, and as we learned later his health problems seem to stretch to his liver and he actually mostly eats hospital food. His size does not seem to be something to even make light jabs at. |

Episode 4:
What a lovely episode! Hinata is just too adorable. That lunchbox she made looked delicious, shame that the guy she admired didn't even notice it. Well, the episode was cute although there was one scene (flashback or maybe a delusion?) about Rei that can be concerning. Still, I find Rei's relationship with Akari, Momo, etc to be quite charming still. Oh and I love the way Shaft has been using the body movements in the show. |

I agree, cute eppie. Uh, with the exception of that one rapey(?) spike, of course. I wonder who that female was ... stepmother? Step-sister. Fortunately, hentai and Japanese porn have taught me that dudes always sleep with their stepmoms/real moms/step-sisters/real sisters. It's, like, the law or something.

Episode 5:
Well, it's a bittersweet-drama episode with Rei and the chemistry between him and the girls. The bits of comedy is quite amusing in this series imo. Segment of the day chasing Momo is hilarious. Loved the way they expressed the character interactions though and ways to show emotions. Rei plays a big brother-like role for Momo which shows a bit more of his mature side. Felt bad for Rei's past though considering what happened to his family after a tragedy. However, I think the series also did a good job at getting the viewers to familiarize with Rei's character and how he began shogi. |

I posted this in the March episode review thread:
Well that episode made clear the full dimensions of the tragedy that is Rei's life. I don't think I was aware that Rei had a younger sister but obviously his entire family was wiped out in a car accident. That is the major tragedy of his life of course but then we find out the secondary tragedies. First, by rights, the child Rei should have gone to live with his uncle's family but his aunt is a repulsive bitch who doesn't even bother to hide her delight that this horrific accident means her husband will take over the family hospital instead of Rei's father. Rei is faced with going to an orphanage but when his father's friend/shogi rival asks him if he likes shogi, Rei - in an act of self-preservation, to avoid going to an orphanage - lies and says he does, knowing that means the friend will take him in. Well, we all saw how that turned out. Ah, but that isn't tragedy enough. We see he quits high school to pursue shogi full time - again, not because he enjoys the game, but because if he starts earning money from it, he can move out of the House of Horrors he currently is in. We also find out that Rei's troubles began before the death of his family. He was already a loner and socially isolated. Gosh, having your entire family wiped out in a drunk driving accident must really have helped. Oi. So here is a guy who is well and truly trapped. Shogi has (mostly) painful associatons for him, it's a game that he's never really liked but that he's been pushed into by circumstances (desire to spend time with a busy father, desire to avoid being sent to an orphanage, desire to be independent so he can move out of fraught adoptive home) and yet he is doomed to have to pursue it as the only way to make a living. This show's genre is not slice of life - it's horror and belongs on the shelf next to Hell Girl. Please tell me that Akari is going to throw him a pity eff at some point because this poor, cursed sonofabitch needs some ray of sunshine. |

I dropped out of the show because there was no real context for Mopey McSad, which meant he was just some sullen kid. I don't think I have time to go back and get caught up, but I'm always disappointed when the context which would convince me to give a crap about what's going on in the show is hidden until much later.
