As much fun as it is for us viewers I wouldn't want my characters in another show without being asked :/

Does Miria and Isaac from Baccano! turning up in Durarara!! count as a cameo?
They definitely still happen though, but the only one that comes to mind right now was a couple of Strike Witches characters turning up as background characters in... I think it may have been an episode of Zettai Karen Children. |

Just this season. On the first couple episodes of akiba strip figurines depicting characters from sore ga seiyuu appeared on screen.
I remember plenty of early and mid 2000's comedy shows out right parody big titles such as dragon ball, Saint seiya and gundam. Like excel saga, school rumble and hayate no gotoku. I wonder how they got away with it |

The thing about cameos is that they can be allowed depending on various factors. For example:
1- Characters from Shonen Jump can appear in Gintama and Good Luck Girl because the manga which is based on it´s published there. 2-The cameos that appear in Durarara do so because these characters are from Dengeki Bunko, where the Durarara novels are published 3- Oreimo had an action figure of Kirito in its second season, since SAO is done by A-1 studios, who also did Oreimo 2nd season. But I think it´s good that there are less cameos now, because a series that has like 5 or more character cameos in that series, like in the thumbnail, is doing basically lazy use of it. Like reference humor, there should be a reason for the cameo to appear. |

Not too recent an example anymore (2008) but I did like the backs-of-heads-to-the-camera Lucky Star "cameo" in the karaoke hall in Kannagi: Shrine Maidens, paying homage to Kannagi director Yutaka Yamamoto's aborted-after-four-episodes stint helming Lucky Star.
Lucky Star itself had plenty of gags referring to other anime, though all the Haruhi Suzumiya stuff was intra-studio and the non-KyoAni anime theme songs sung during the end credits obviously had to have been licensed. |

Genshiken had tip of the hat references to series but also had to feature certain model kits in the anime because one of the sponsors made them. I do miss stuff Project A-Ko though it was one of the first Anime I ever saw.
Even though I didn't get all the references first time around I eventually did after research and being a fan for a longer period of time and it became more enjoyable because of that.. |

I figured it was a copyright issue since cameos like that tend to only happen when two shows come from the same studio, or maybe share members of the production committee. When that isn't the case, references or cameos usually are obscured just enough, which is a good sign somebody wants to avoid a copyright issue. For instance, characters will have black bars over their eyes, titles will be bleeped, or the good ol' change some letters around.

Some more (relatively recent) cameo examples, referencing the series Oofuri (2007)
-There were 3 Oofuri cameos in xxxHOLiC Kei (2008). Different anime studio but the manga has the same publisher and both anime had the same director. -It wasn't as obvious a cameo but Cardfight!! Vanguard (2011) also had an Oofuri reference, when they made a one-off joke about the main character wanting to pitch at Koushien, who's voiced by the same actor who plays the main character in Oofuri. This one might have been inspired by Oofuri's second series airing the previous year (2010). Though in this case, different anime studio, different director, and different manga publisher (though the anime came first anyway). So possibly that's why they had to keep their reference more vague, though if you knew the actor it was pretty obvious that was the joke. |

My favourite was a cameo by Chiyo Mihama. One episode briefly showed Medaka Kurokami, which I'm guessing was one of few cases where they showed a character from an anime that was not produced by the studio |

The last anime I remember with serious number of parodies was Lucky Star (2007) and the first two series of Genshiken (2004, 2007) though the third series (2013) was noticeably lighter on them.

Trigger seems to like using cameos, though it's pretty much always either their own characters or old Gainax characters. When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace had characters from Kill La Kill and Evangelion running around in the backgrounds, I remember (along with figurines and merchandise featuring characters from FLCL, Panty & Stocking, Gurren Lagann, etc.), and of course Luluco was made of this, with pretty much every previous Trigger anime except Supernatural Battles showing up at least once.

I remember the non-anime cameo in Kill La Kill (the guys from Pulp Fiction), but the one cameo I laughed until I divided my nucleus was the Captain Tsubasa spoof in episode 5 of Rosario + Vampire.
