Didn't another animator die in a fire a few days ago? That's just too tragic...

Am I the only one who finds his Destiny of Fire (炎のさだめ) cruelly ironic? Sad to see him go, sadder still that their passing was under such horrible circumstances....

Quite a tragic way to die. Nobody should be forced to go through that fate.

Another one so soon?
Rest in peace, sir. Was this natural, though? Or was it planned...?

My bet is that they had stored easily flammable material (old newspapers, manga, magazines, posters, books) and at least one of them was a smoker or there was a short circuit in on of their appliances. I remember a mythbusters video, it takes a few minutes for fire to devour everything in reach, but the biggest problem is the smoke, they probably had their windows closed (at least where I live we have had unusually cold weather at night).

Requiescat in pace, Shioyama-sama. And thank you. Sad

He wasn't an animator; he was the music composer for Mobile Suit Gundam and a host of other anime series. But yeah, this is the second such incident in the last week.

I don't know about this guys particular situation, but from what I gather this sort of thing is sadly common in Japan. Apartments tend to be smaller and more compact. This means that there is a tendency for stuff to pile up easily. If something accidentally ignites -- be it an unattended cigarette, a shorting electrical device, or a space heater with too much stuff around it -- all the fuel for a fire is within easy reach, and thus can quickly expand. Cramped quarters also mean that it can be harder to reach a safe exit; if the fire spreads to the only doorway leading in or out, you're basically trapped. Plus, smaller apartments means it takes a shorter amount of time for smoke to accumulate to hazardous levels. Taken together, all of this means that apartment fires (when they occur) tend to be more deadly in Japan than elsewhere.

Its still sad, though. My condolences to his family.

Complete speculation here, but... old anime cels. If memory serves me, prior to the 1990s most of the studios used to use acetate-based cels. That stuff can be a nightmare if ignited; quick burning and the smoke can be highly toxic. If Mr. Shioyama was storing old cels of his work at his apartment, that could easily have turned a small fire into a dangerous conflagration.

A terrible tragedy, and the lose of an iconic character designer. House fires are no joke, and the sort of materials/memorabilia an artist/animator would logically have around their home are some of the worst in terms of fire propellant and toxic smoke.

Who got the death note and has a grudge against Veteran Animators, because all these deaths happening within a few weeks of each other is getting depressing.

Looks like none of them were burnt to death.

Still, seniors dying by an unnatural cause is something that nobody really desires.

This is truly terrible, even to someone who's yet to watch Votoms, I have boundless respect for Shioyama's style and direction.

RIP
