See, just a simple misunderstanding. Those goods were never meant for export, and every retailer was mistakenly selling them overseas (many, many mistaken retailers). As soon as Avex noticed (after many, many years) they clarified this.

It be nice for once if one of these corporate responses wasn't a complete crock of shit.

Not to mention that the explanation really was not an explanation. They just meant to tell us that they never wanted their products sold overseas and that they wanted to limit their profits and go bankrupt with domestic only sales.

In their "explanation" are they trying to say they are trying to get a distributor overseas for exclusive shipping and sales? No idea. At least their releases are very limited.

Hopefully this doesn't mean we'll be seeing "Avex USA" popping up anytime soon. We don't need another Aniplex/PonyCan with all of their price-gouging. Mad

If they set up a US unit and sold for Aniplex/PonyCan prices, then they'd still be slightly undercutting the prices of the Japanese domestic market goods that they don't want exported. That's a large part of why this doesn't make much sense. Trying to prevent reverse imported US market Region A BluRays from undercutting Japanese prices through delaying licensing, setting up one's own subsidiary, controlling prices, etc. at least has a logic to it, even if not always convincing. The occasional "this porn disturbs foreigners with its portrayals of underage / incest / scat / guro / all of those at once and is possibly illegal in other countries so we won't export it" policy has some logic. Refusing to export the absolute most expensive version of the product overseas is weird.

Meanwhile, this will just help to up piracy. And those collectors who are ardent enough and not pissed enough yet will simply find other means, like shopping services and agents...

Thus, we would like you to know that we have not suddenly banned the overseas sales of product, but rather it is one of those products that from the start was never meant to be available for sale overseas, and the dealership concerned has just recently made the necessary correction.

This...really reeks of bulls**t. I'm not sure if this is pure negligence or some weird disdain toward the foreign market. What more wierd is how other Avex Picture series like One Piece and Ass Class already have a North America, Europe, and Australia local releases.

Why are those exports banned on CD Japan if they already have non Japanese releases?

If shows like Yuri on Ice or Osomatsu san weren't meant to be distributed overseas....then why post listings on sites like CD Japan that legally allows non Japanese fans to export it in the first place?? Why prevent non Japanese fans from willfully financially supporting your high valued product??? That's like if Aniplex or Sunrise's Gundam franchise decided to banned all of their Japanese exports option with RightStuf.com and the ONLY way to buy it was to wait years later for a local release.

So far Osomatsu san is only legally available through Madman Entertainment but on region 4 DVD (same reason why I can't buy their Mushishi season 2 because it's on DVD only so importing the Japanese BD is the only other way) whereas Yuri on Ice has a decent chance of Funimation obtaining it but, the release might not include the bonus goodies that Kubo-sensei drew or the choreography videos. There's something super fishy about this...

I can surmise two things. First, Avex apparently does not like making an extra profit from overseas sales; this is either shear stupidity or racism. And second, Avex wants to create an overseas distribution branch? If so, I wonder if they will be an Aniplex USA with some sense of how overseas markets work, or be as dysfunctional as the apparently dead Ponycan USA.

That'd depend on how much freedom Avex would allow their US branch to have. Ponycan USA isn't allowed to do anything unless they first get permission from the main office in Japan. Even then, it's often declined because PonyCan doesn't like the idea. After all, what would a bunch of silly Westerners know about marketing anime to Westerners in comparison to the old men running the show in Japan?

Avex is primarily a music company, and as such I think they might have very strict views of copyright laws when it comes to the music rights.

It's probably the case where they are following the strictest letter of JASRAC which effectively restricts any Japanese company selling anything with Japanese created music on it overseas directly, unless the Japanese company pays dues to every overseas music rights organization like ASCAP, etc. If Avex wasn't paying ASCAP and every other foreign music rights organizations (usually 1 per country), they are "technically" violating JASRAC's position on music rights, even if it's not AVEX themselves doing the exporting.

I have personal experience with Japanese lawyers saying that Japanese companies are not allowed to sell their own stuff overseas because of music rights issues.

No matter how you look at this, the entire scenario doesn't make sense. For example, there probably were hundreds of people that were willing to import the Yuri on Ice BD's from Japan, that's some extra profit that they're denying. If a western fan is willing to spend a ton of money on some overpriced plastic disks, they should accept.

I can see Japanese people who can sell on eBay buying a bunch of merchandise to sell to overseas buyers though.

Their explanation about "it was never meant to be bought by foreigners" is either 100% bullshit or borderline xenophobic so I'm not sure which would be worse.

I can't help but feel worried/scared about the "wanting to get distribution rights overseas". I've been meaning to buy Yuri on Ice whenever Funimation decides to put it out, but their reservations about confirming they're planning on a home release have made me uneasy from the beginning, and with this "threat" from Avex I'm worried we'll be faced with another misguided Ponycan fail that will make the show entirely unaffordable. The tone of this response is so... i don't know how to say it, but it sounds like the company has no idea of how to address its public, the response seems agressive and disdainful, like they're saying they'd sell their stuff to the overseas market becuse they do kinda want money, but they don't really want our filthy gaijin hands on their products. Not inviting, promising or optimistic but a "ugh, i guess we gotta".

I'm hoping this comment about acquiring distribution rights for the overseas market is more aimed at their Asian branches. I really want to own Yuri on Ice, but I can't afford a Japanese-price release and more importantly, I don't want to buy from a company with such bullshit attitudes

"It was never meant to be bought by foreigners" was essentially saying "we only cleared all the rights/issues for selling this title inside Japan." They didn't take any effort into getting any possibly clearances to sell their title outside Japan (ratings, copyright clearances, music rights, etc).

There's two things that could be said by "acquiring distribution rights." The first is:
They want clearance from any possible rightsholder/provision from selling directly from Japan while allowing any international rightsholder to sell their own localized version.

Secondly is the scenario you fear: they use their North American subsidiary to produce a localized version and distribute them from there. This would be buying the distribution rights internationally from their parent company, but they would have to buy these rights first.

In the case of Yuri on Ice, it was TV Asahi who held international rights and who sold them to Crunchyroll, who will use their partnership with Funimation to produce a home video release of it. It's extremely unlikely Avex will stop this as they don't own said rights.
