that's one thing though.... game reviews are like movie reviews, they are everywhere, magazines, gamefaqs.com and the staff writing those reviews are gamers, not necesary anime fans, to review a game like final fantasy XII is as generic as reviewing the movie hits like spiderman 3 or whatever is hot in the market.

In my oppinion, we are an anime community and maybe if you don't play imports and you get to read the review of the Berserk game for ps2, you may start ordering and discover that is a very pleasant game, both the Macross and the Berserk game for the ps2 are the best anime games of all time but sadly, there is not enough market to make them mainstream (like some anime titles, ebichu anyone?) so playing imports is just like watching anime (those are imported shows anyway)

and just for the record, the Hokuto no ken arcade (by sega, done on the atomiswave board by Sammy) is coming out on march, it has been a fighting hit in japan and the 2d action is superb with countless of moves and super combos, I been waiting forever to play that and sadly it was an arcade exclusive only, but not anymore, that is one title worthy of your shelf.

and is not hard at all to play imports in your console, there are legal "shortcuts" like the swap magic, flip top cover change etc etc, and with nice stores like www.play-asia.com they send your stuff in no time.

If you are a gamer, is worth to play imports, if you are an anime fan, is a delight to collect rare anime titles and the american magazines rarely cover "import only" titles unless they are meant to be released in america, so I guess ANN is trying to be a "source" for information about anime games, but we need to go to the source, how about the game "Azumi"? the game is awesome but is not based on the movie at all, and is great, if you are into ninjas you have "Shinobidoh Takumi" and "Shinobidoh imashime" maybe if you are onto the whole Rurouni Kenshin stuff, you would like to try "Fu'un Shinsengumi" that is an awesome "shinsengumi simulator" where you go on the streets with your unit hunting down the ishin shishi and getting on samurai action, or maybe you want your favorite characters of Gensomaden saiyuki kicking A$$ so you can pick "Saiyuki reload" for ps2 that it has almost everything that you love about the show and is a 3d fighter but easy to play, all the moves, specials are very easy to pull and it has tons of illustration and voice overs that can be enjoyed just for the fans, as a game is not tekken quality but it certainly will bring you a nice time if you enjoy the saiyuki series.

knowledge about obscure ones..... that's the secret for success.

However it would be odd to do imports only. Especially considering the huge amounts of Domestic Releases that are Anime Influenced, or are spin-offs of titles. For one, it would be a crime to not review Dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2 just because it was lucky enough to get a Domestic Release. You also have to realize that not reviewing games that are from a Main Stream Anime Title like Naruto has many negative things. If people don't know what Anime it's from because it's obscure no one will read your Reviews. People want to be forwarned about Games they know exists.

I may not have all the latest consoles, but I do have both of the latest Hand-Helds that are in the mainstream Eye, The PlayStation Portable, and a Nintendo DS lite. Since these hand-helds will be hit with Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII, Dragon Quest IX, etc. it would also be a shame for them to get neglected because of the imported games, However if you were to do a review of a imported game that has a domestic Release as of Press Time it would be great because you're ahead of the pack(By pack I mean other Video Game Review Sites in North America).

While we will be covering imports occasionally, mostly we're focusing on games that our audience can actually buy and play.

I am assuming by imports you mean the titles that can be bought at most stores. (BB is selling DS import games, like Shonen Jump) It's so strange, this was my dream job as a child (Well working for Nintendo Power) but when you look at all the qualifications it's so much more then you realize.

In other news I am glad ANN is going to cover anime video games, and hopefully be opening a video game (anime) forum in the future. Lots of changes this year for the site I wonder what's next?

Now I'm new around here and can't speak for the powers that be but I think you are correct, the goal is to have reviews of anime related games from an anime fan perspective.

When you read a mainstream review you often have to understand that though the writer may be familiar with the property as a fan they are often required not to write from that perspective. They have to submit work to an editor who may not know or care that Full Metal Alchemist is a TV series based on manga or anything else. They have a generic audience and can't discuss the factors that might make a mediocre general game an Anime fans dream game because the audiences can be quite different.

Having a reviewer take the correct approach for the intended audience often will change the flavor and information in a review. That said though you still have to speak to if a game is playable and fun, no matter what the setting or how much fan service the game might offer to die-hards.

I hope that we'll have a lot of anime's video games reviews. I personally like to import games based on my favourite series (even if they suck, but it be fun to know it before I find out myself). More or less recently I bought School Rumble 2nd Term [Limited Edition] at Play-Asia during a special offer for something like 50$. Sure I don't understand japanese (at least the menu are in english) and its more a trial by error session (speaking for the adventure genre), but i had fun Razz . Plus it's the kind of stuff I collect (things related to the series story). All this to say that I like the idea.

I have 2 questions before I start writing.

1. We are suppose to wirte 2 sample reviews. I want to know if each are suppose to be 1500 words each?

2. Are PC games fine to be reviewed

Thanks

"While we will be covering imports occasionally, mostly we're focusing on games that our audience can actually buy and play."

you mean, licensed translated versions inside USA?

because you guys have a lot of audience in Europe where "Saint Seiya the Hades chapter" was released in Pal version at it's full glory translated and officially licensed, but in an american perspective that would be an import too.
so just making sure that mostly of the games reviewed will be american versions.

I wish this new section can open the eyes of new (game) licenses too, The only game I was waiting was the first Generation of chaos for the PS2, it has a riveting story and is very fun to play but we got the awful psp version with is like the 5th installement of the series.

I would sign up because i know i'm okay with writing (and 1500 isn't too bad i guess), but i can't. Though i have quite a few game consoles, and i may be getting a new computer soon, i don't have any connections. Does that part really matter much? If it doesn't, i'd probably sign up. I don't understand the game writing experience thing either. Do they mean have experience writing faqs or reviews for magazine articles and other websites?

I might send an application through just to take a shot at it...

They say that two-years experience is an ideal qualification, but not a must. If so, is there an age limit? What will the games mainly be rated (probably Teen or Mature)?

Honestly if you don't have at least 2 years of experience I wouldn't bother at this point; most of the applicants we're getting have more than that.

Also, there is no way for me to say what "most of the games will be rated" since we'll be reviewing a bunch of different genres.
