| It sure was a smart idea for Toho to launch to family-targeted films in the exact same weekend. |

| Obviously, the Japanese public separates Hayao Miyazaki films from other Ghibli films.
And obviously Harry Potter is kicking ass, even Pokemon and Ghibli. |

| Hahahaha why are they releasing two Pokemon films on the same day? That just doesn't make sense to me. And I guess Pokemon really is still a mega-giant in Japan, big enough to beat out a new Ghibli film at least. But not quite big enough to top Harry Potter. | ||||||

| Hayao himself probably would have beaten Pokemon, so enurtsol has a point here.
That said, looking at the credits, it seems that daddy held Goro's hand for so much of the production he might was well have directed it himself anyway. It looks nice, very shoujo-Whisper of the Heart like. |

| Despite there being 2 pokemon movies (what an idiotic idea), it's still quite a blow to the Ghibli studios. | ||||||

| The new Ghibli movie would've probably made #2 had they not combined the stats for the two separate Pokemon movies into one entry.
Each of them probably only made half of what they listed, which is way less than what the Ghibli movie earned. |

| is it really two pokemon films added together? Because that's pretty cheap. Either way, seems like the public is a little lukewarm to poor Goro after his last effort... | ||||||

| I was going through film records the other day, and I noticed that Ghibli films in Japan have LEGS. They'll run them for a really long time, so not a lot of money is brought in all at once. I think, in the long run, people will view it more of a success. | ||||||

| Pokemon not listed (at least for now) on box office mojo :
http://boxofficemojo.com/ A rather weak start for the Ghibli film indeed, both Doraemon and Conan also brought in more money during their first weekend. However, some people who went to see HP and/or Pokemon will probably go and see Kokuriko later on which would allow the movie to gross in a satisfying amount of money. |

Think of it like a Pokemon game -- you basically have the same game, but two different variants which have a different legendary Pokemon and maybe a few different twists here and there, but ultimately the same thing. This is how the B&W movie is -- you have your Black version and then your white version. It only makes sense for them to add the totals together. |

Yes, they run a long time, but they usually open at #1 and stays about there for a while. Anything short is unusual.
So, it's like movies with different endings like Clue? |

| It was a really bad weekend to have to opening with competition from Pokemon and Harry Potter. I'd also blame the surprising dearth of advertising; whereas Arrietty had a huge amount of various tv spots, cast interviews on tv, and billboards all over Tokyo last year, Kokuriko only had one short teaser trailer that only released a week before the movie and a few posters. Really too bad, because the movie was really fantastic. I'm sure it'll do well in the weeks to come. | ||||||
