Very weird story. Indeed, anyone that knows yaoi also know where they can get it, so Wal Mart bailing on it isn't a problem. Plenty of anime sellers that will gladly step in.

Odd thing is that yaoi is the kind of thing that needs to be shrinkwrapped, even though its intended audience is mostly female. I do think the Consumerist is going over the top, because there's a big difference between yaoi and hentai aimed at a male audience (of the kind we know well in anime).

Perhaps they should have aproached ANN about the differences and a little education.

wait...anime porn? I never was able to understand how wal-mart could go through a whole movie and edit it and then put it on the shelves. it seems like if you would just let the consumer decide.
1)It was manga, not anime. There's a big difference between the two. 2) Walmart does not edit movies themselves. The movies are edited by the companies themselves who release two different versions on DVD, an edited version and an uncut version. Blaming Walmart for the edited movies would be like blaming Walmart for the cuts to Naruto just because they sell dub-only anime DVDs. And the reason why companies release two different versions on DVDs is because they want to let the consumer's decide, so why you're acting like the consumers have no choice in which version to buy is a mystery beyond me. Walmart is not the one the responsible for the decision to edit movies, it is the companies themselves who also release an alternate uncut version. Just go to another store if you want your movies uncut.

Furthermore, Walmart is not the only store in the world that carries edited movies and CDs. Even in Japan most hentai manga is censored and the Japanese usually don't even get an alternate uncut version so you should feel grateful that at least we get an alternate uncut version that you can simply go find at any other store. It's not like anyone forces you to go to Walmart. I don't even buy anime at Walmart, anyway. I either go to BestBuy or order DVDs online where it's much cheaper. 3) As a post earlier in the thread already stated, Walmart never sold yaoi manga. It was a mistake in the links on their online store. Honestly, I don't even know why this is even news-worthy. It's an interesting bit of trivia info but it's not like none of this actually got sold at the stores themselves and it's not like a big fiasco got started because of it. I think anime fans are just blowing this out of proportion.

Well, for whatever anime IS at Walmart, it seems to be MUCH cheaper than it is almost anywhere else. I mean I see Ah! My Goddess TV vol. 6, at Walmart for 15 or 16 bucks where at BestBuy it's $25, of course this was at the time they were new, and the same goes for others but the only other one I remember vividly is Gunslinger Girl vol. 3 for $15 or $16 at Wally World while at BestBizzle, it was $25.....now I don't know about online.

And I always wondered why yaoi was hidden from people like it was the plague, I'm not talking about Walmart anymore BTW, just anywhere. I see it at BestBuy and all but there's only like 2 volumes and NO more, and there behind things like Shrine of the Morning Mist or Eiken even, lesser known titles that might not even be looked at, let alone picked up. Although I would like to get some doujins in places so I can show kids their favorite action anime stars put in awkward positions/situations.

Took the words out of my mouth, Kouji. Heaven knows how this got to be such a great piece of internet drama, but frankly, it wasn't. If (and I mean if) something had actually happened due to this, then I could see a reason for the commotion. Otherwise, it was just a mistake on Walmart's part, and that's it.

It's best never to buy music or videos from Wal*Mart. I saw a Ron White CD advertised in a Wal*Mart and bought it without thinking because he's one of my favorite comedians. When I played it in my car, I immediately kicked myself, as all the curse words were bleeped out. If you've ever heard Ron White, you understand how stupid it is to sell his CD edited. Anyone capable of being offended at that kind of thing isn't going to buy his CD anyway!

It astounds me that Wal*Mart is the number one retailer of CDs and videos. Just how stupid are consumers anyway?

At least there are signs the tide is turning. Wal*Mart's sales are starting to stagnate and even drop.

No, I'm pretty sure the reason they release the two different versions is because Wal*Mart refuses to sell certain videos unedited. And as the nation's largest video retailer, they can pretty much demand whatever they want.

I mean, if what you were saying was true, and Wal*Mart was in no way to blame, then their stores would carry both versions of the DVD, wouldn't they?

And of course, Wal-marts policy on homosexual eroticism remains absolute!.

I only say this because when they say "Porn" they could be exaggerating, like many people categorize anime as porn for whatever reason despite the fact it could be as straightforwards as Bebop, Naruto, or Bleach.[/url]

I personally don't like Walmart. They ruin too many small buisnesses and even big buisnesses. Also, they don't carry many anime titles and I haven't seen any manga titles at any of the Walmarts here. I prefer to go to the local comic book store, anime conventions, or Chapters when it comes to buying anime/manga.

I don't like Walmart either, but did anyone catch the part where the titles in question aren't even real yaoi, but OEL stuff? You can skip Walmart and do much better with Google or even Deviantart. =P

ETA: Not that I have a problem with OEL (apart from not being able to find anything that's both aesthetically pleasing AND readable), but if this story gets picked up by major media, then anime/manga fandom is going to get painted with the pervert brush because of titles that don't even come from Japan. Guess my little town is too little. What anime? And why would I want to shop on-line for anything at Wal-Mart?

Didn't see anything on Drudgereport.com, so I guess it isn't much of a blip on the radar. I mean, how oops of a story is it really? WM doesn't sell Jenna Jameson titles, so why hentai? I just bet someone got fired, or was getting fired anyway. Hey beats shooting up the place to let 'em know you're disgruntled.

Is anyone a gruntled employee?

There is a follow up article that states that Wally World has never purchased or sold ANY Yaoi titles. The titles were listed on their website because they automatically import a list from their distributor who does cary Yaoi and the titles were never marked as ignore like they should have been. There really is no story here Wall art never did sell Yaoi, they had some bad links on their web site that were removed.

That doesn't mean I would ever shop at WM, to many other issues with the company that I just can't support. I'll spend my money any where else.

Thank Buddha SOMEBODY gets it. There is no story here. Just like I said in the first thread where everyone was going on and on about "Never thought I'd see the day!" Well guess what, you never DID see they day. Walmart doesn't sell yaoi and never will. This is just a case of a data entry mistake further upstream and nothing more. Get real people.

Funny, I managed to find the racks at my Wal-Mart littered with virtually NO edited versions of Crank. And I came in about 3 hours after they opened. No empty racks bare of "edited" DVD's of Crank.

*head. desk*

(please don't let mainstream media see this please please please please please)

Yeah, I'm starting to think that it's all inevitable... shouldn't have been there in the first place, though.

I wish, you know, there was something we as fans could DO to prevent or delay our inevitable super-labelling.

walmart is damn near fanatical with avoiding anything moderately offensive: consider the "happy holiday" debacle and they being the first to say they wouldn't sell GTA:SA after the Hot coffee business.

i suggest not shopping at walmart for a plethora of reasons but i also suggest we use this to our advantage: i for one am highly offended by family guy, lets try to petition walmart to stop selling it...tee hee take that macfarlene!

PS, my family sent a giftcard which i used online with no credit card. i downloaded music. i suppose i could of used it for more devious means with no age verification.

the sap has spoken.

I've been saying "Happy Holidays" in addition to all the other usual holiday greetings since I was a wee little lad. Then suddenly one day it became an instant affront to every Christian in Texas. Needless to say, I immediately made it my preferred holiday greeting from then on. I had never sounded so (secularly) joyous in all my life. Oh man what fun it is to bring pain to people with appreciably thin skin and enormously big mouths.
