Oh wow, seriously?! That is so awesome! I watched this series in dub, on VHS tapes, when I was 7 or 8 years old and loved it! I even had a crush on Hound (think it was his voice but who knows what I was thinking back then
 ).
I highly recommend this show to Hayao Miyazaki and Sherlock Holmes fans. I haven't watched the sub version yet so I would say watch it in dub. Thanks ANN for the nostalgic feeling you gave me.

*face palms* And I call myself a huge fan. Edit: Found this on GhibliWiki: The 46-minute movie version combines two TV episodes directed by Miyazaki: Blue Carbuncle and Treasure Under the Sea. This movie was released in theaters together with Nausicaä in 1984, and has different OP and ED themes, as well as different voice actors from the TV version. Different voice actors? Weird. |

Ah. I thought it was a theatrical film myself, particularly since I saw Atsuko Tanaka in the credits. Sorry for the confusion.

About a year ago I was able to find the Pioneer DVDs used on ebay for a pretty reasonable price for an out of print series. It's a great show and definitely worth watching dubbed. And that's coming from someone who watches things subbed 95% of the time.
I decided to buy since I'd been watching it on Crunchyroll. However once you got to episode 7 or so, their audio and video were out of sync by a significant amount, and I was already hooked by that point. Hopefully this stream fixes those issues for new fans. |

According to the FAQ page for it on GhibliWiki, the movie was released while there was still a dispute with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's estate, so the names of characters had to be changed. That would explain them having to record the voices multiple times, as when it was released on TV they had the rights to the character names (at least I assume the TV version uses the correct character names . . . I haven't actually seen it yet). Plus, the movie version was released before the TV version, so it is possible they couldn't get the same voice actors back for the TV version. |

And even though it was dubbed in Those Old Days of US syndication, the dub voices are actually pretty good in a Streamline-ish sort of way-- Holmes/Hound's English voice has the more elegantly Baker Street ring to it. And although Miyazaki only directed seven of the first twelve episodes (#'s 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11) they're very DEFINITELY from the early Lupin/Cagliostro phase of his career-- Watch the normally sweet-domestic Mrs. Hudson do her imitation of Cagliostro's Fujiko in the "White Cliffs of Dover" Episode 10. )

Something interesting I do want to point out. The Japanese and english versions both have different lengthes. Infact, the Japanese version is about a minute shorter than the english version, due to how both versions were cut. Usually this leads to the English version having more footage and scenes. Another thing is I recall reading the English version was recorded first, since it was easiest to adapt from in multiple languages, rather than Japanese.
So take that as you will. |

I've been watching through the dubbed episodes that TMS Entertainment uploaded to YouTube, but it's cool to have both it and the Japanese version here too. I agree that this is one that pretty much has to be watched in English, though.

I like the idea that Sherlock Hound is an "anthropomorphic take" on Holmes and Watson. I thought Arthur Conan Doyle had done a pretty good job of anthropomorphising them already.

Jolly good show. I see Miyazaki forgot to include tails on all the characters. I just chalk that up to the animators being too lazy to develop clothes that would fit around the tail.
