Someone needs to explain yaoi fandom to me. Really. I don't find the point in yaoi, yuri, or even hentai. It's not necessary!

I'm okay with good fanservice, though.

IMO, that was a TERRIBLE choice for Rant. It amuses me that it is in the same column as the "guilty pleasures" response from Zac.

Should Gravitation really be taken that seriously? I mean, it just sounds like another "making-the-band" type deal but with gay guys. And it just makes me think of
this cartoon. (Not work safe.)

That's sort of why I'm not interested in Fake, either. I'm not into straight cop duos-assuming you consider Starsky and Hutch or Crocket and Tubbs to be straight-either. I do have a soft spot for Descendants of Darkness, though. Mostly because the fantasy elements come first, and the sexuality of the characters isn't important to the story. I get bored by romantic comedies which feature breeders fawning all over each other, too.

A group of people had a similar idea more than eighty years ago.

And failed considerably.

Anyways, where the hell are these too damn young yaoi fans coming from?

I think it's been said that the psychology behind yaoi is that girls like it because sometimes the characters are somehow easy to identify in terms of relationships (of course, minus those issues and struggles of being a gay couple). It does sound weird, but it's easier for a reader to identify with one character or the other. With a shoujo or shounen storyline, your mind is forced to think you should sympathize with the female main character if you're a girl.

Oh, the butt sex? Well dammit, it's the same reason why some guys have a thing for lesbians. One hot guy is great. Two? Even better!

I don't usually post in forums, mostly because I'd rather not deal with the backlash of people misunderstanding me, but sometimes I just can't take it anymore.

First, Gravitation is shonen-ai, not yaoi (and yes there is a difference, a big one, but that's a complaint for a different time).

Second, the appeal of Gravitation (at least for me and all of my roommates, and we all happen to be in our twenties) is that it's not really about gay guys, it's about love. The idea of Gravitation is that love is like gravity. It's a force you can't resist. A force that pulls two people together. Love doesn't care about your age, gender, etc. If you've ever seen it, there is a scene with Shuichi and Yuki's brother that plainly points this out. I'll admit, the soundtrack is a huge appeal as well, but the story (minus about half the insanity of the manga) is great as well.

Finally, if you don't understand an anime (or manga) don't just bash it. Just because you don't understand it (for whatever reason, I'm not saying stupidity is the cause) doesn't mean it isn't a good anime. Simply asking about the appeal without being insulting can get an answer just as well as whining about why everything thinks it's so great when you just don't see it.

There. I've said my peace.

I thought the rant was fine. Although the "negative" examples of 13-year-old yaoi fandom ( ""I have to own every single Gravi thing there is! I have to write more Gravi fanfics than any other fan! I have to know the manga and anime inside-out!") were not really anything notable, it does seem that there's something wrong with that fanbase, considering how many other fans seem to have a burning hatred for them. For one thing, I think it's completely normal for young girls to become over obsessed with something so that they must own everything/know every fact.. if not yaoi, then a boy band or a sports team or anything. But there is something wrong with 13 yr old girls watching hardcore porn like Boku no Sexual Harrassment (never seen it, the only thing I've heard about it is: "Well I hope you like drumsticks and corn on the cob.. Shocked ), or pretending to have some gender identity-crisis because of this stuff. But you know what..? They're only 13, so they'll probably outgrow it.

You know how you're okay with good fanservice? Some people who are okay with good fanservice are also okay with the next logical step, IE, everyone nekkid and engaging in activities of various sorts.

ACTIVITIES.

I seriously can't think of a better way to end Naruto than the one Answerman described. Except to maybe compound that by having every character die in a random way right before a climatic battle. Like, Sakura's about to confront Itachi when suddenly...Spontanious combustion! It happens. Then later, Shikamaru is just seconds from begining an epic fight with Gara when suddenly...elephant stampede! Oh, that's a shame. At least Rock Lee is about to fight Orochimaru...oh crap, time-traveling John Wilkes Booth who's confused Lee with Abe Lincoln! Now he belongs to the ages.

And of course, Chouji explodes. Good times.

I could not agree with you more on that.

And like others have said 13 year old girls are obsessed when they find something to latch onto. Hell, when I was 13 I was a crazy Harry Potter fangirl. Wasn't too bad, but bad enough. And you grow out of it fast. Hoepfully in the near future they will be able to see more than just 'OmGz! BOiz kiSsinG!"

Besides, there's overly obsessed/scary/stupid fans in every fandom.

I agree with the rant...Mostly.

I don't think it's much to take seriously: Gravitation, I mean. My main point of focus throughout the entire series was how much Hiroshi was a great friend. Not 'OMG Buttsex' (This coming from me, a 15-year-old.) Making that generalization is wrong in my case, but sadly true in many others.

I have a friend who is 14, and another who is 13. Both of them are self-proclaimed "Yaoi Fangirls" I think they're both idiots. Espeically since they're calling Gravitation Yaoi. e_e

I see this comment a lot be people. "Yaoi/Yuri and Shonen/Shoujo-Ai aren't even nearly the same!" And... it's nonsense. If the person saying that truly believes that, they're dellusional. Sure, Shonen/Shoujo-Ai doesn't really show the explicit sex scenes and Yaoi/Yuri tends to focus on those. But in the end, it's merely two approaches to the exact same subject. There's a slight difference that comes because of the difference in approach, but at the end of the day, it's still the same thing.

Anyway, that said, the rant has a point. If you look on places like AFF you'll see a million and a half Yaoi stories, 90% of which are for non-Yaoi series. I mean, there's more Goku/Vegeta, Naturo/Sasuke, or what-have-you on sites like these than there are anime in existance.

Though, in a way, it's understandable. The girls are at that stage where they're really starting to take notice of guys and they don't quite grasp the fact that 95% of us aren't these bubbly, romantic, gushing people. They see Shonen-Ai/Yaoi and *that* is the kind of relationship they can identify with and want, and thus, cling to it.

At least, this is my experience.

Yes, Naruto dies in the final episode. Here's a basic plot breakdown:

Shortly before delivering the final blow to Kakashi (who it turns out is the series' biggest villain), Naruto gets hit by a car. If I recall correctly, it's a LeBaron.

I laughed extremely hard at this when I read it. Laughing

I have a few anime "guilty pleasures". Saiyuki, for example. It's such an awful program with little production or story value, but the characters are somewhat interesting enough to keep watching.

Speaking of a closely-knit group of bishounen in a show with suggestive opening credits:

Rabid bishounen/shounen-ai/yaoi fangirls are nine and three-quarters times more annoying than furries, overweight Sailor Senshi, and Man-Faye combined.

That being said, I'm friends with at least two.

Oh yeah. Ayane's High Kick was a bit of a guilty pleasure for me, as well as Flame of Recca and Hanappe Bazooka.
