While true I feel I must try. I was raised around the idea that if you wanna bitch about something do something, anything, to change what you're complaining about. If you don't you're just whining and should just be quiet. I figure it's a pointless battle that will no doubt strip away more of my sanity. As they say though, somebody's gotta do it.

While I agree with that, I feel there is a difference when it comes to other people. "Im getting low grades in school" is a complaint that I can, and should, change myself, by studying harder. "The people around me are stupid" isnt really something I have the ability to change, since it involves THEM, and not ME.
But hey, I do agree. Iv been known to really reame people out online for "OMG TYPIN LYK DIS!111111"
Seriously, there have been times on Deviant Art when I would literally re write someones journal entry in legible english and post it back to them, saying "There, now dosn't this sound much more dignified and intellegent?"
(I made sure they were actually native english speakers, of course)
But of course, they don't change.

I have to admit, sometimes I do stick random Japanese words into my phrases. But, 1) its usually me muttering and its unintentional 2) I acutally you the word in the right context 3) Its generally in a full proper sentence cause I did take classes. 4) Its usually only around my friends who know I do this sometimes

Though I don't do it as much as I used to, it was mostly while I was taking classes to help practise. I do find it annoying when people do it.

You're right, but don't you feel like you're kinda preaching to the converted here? Maybe you thought that if one person changed their ways by reading your rant you were 'making a difference'. Or maybe you just needed to.. uh, rant. But if it's the former, I hope you won't be disappointed when you find out that stupid people aren't gonna stop acting that way even when you point out how idiodic they really are. This is just coming from my experiance, of course.

On a side note, I'm really proud that I don't know what the term "glomping" means haha

The only reason i know the term "glomping" is because of a certian perverted lesbian friend of mine, who is annoying as hell and your typical anime fangirl. She also likes hentai way to much... But its a free world so she can do whatever she wants.

And here I was hoping there would be an excuse why they were all so good.

I loved all three rants. Well, I loved the first two but I can also understand where #3 is coming from.

#1) People just flat out need to get over themselves. Period. But like someone else mentioned when you get large groups of people together the I.Q. level drops proportionally to the amount of people.

#2) I agree with this also. I don't like Naruto. And I never will. You will not be able to convince me to sit through another episode of it ever. But if you like it cool! I'm fine with you liking it and I'm glad that you do and that you enjoy the hell out of it. I love Sailor Moon (which I'm sure everyone knows by now Wink ) But I also accept the fact that some people, maybe even a lot of people, would spit on a Sailor Moon DVD if it was on fire. Fine, I can accept that. I just wish fanboys/girls would/could accept that people might not like what they are currently obsessed with.

#3) Honey, she won't be 14 forever. Just like you won't be. You're just growing up faster than she is. Hopefully, this won't hurt your friendship so give her a little time. Now, if she's STILL doing this 2 to 4 years from now, then you might consider running in the opposite direction.

I have never really been criticized for watching dubs but I have seen a lot of people bash dubs just because they are in english. I remember back in 05 when Naruto came to Toonami a bunch of kids at school were saying that it sucked because it was in english and they screwed it up (marathons all the time, the manga making the USA Today list, and it is Toonami's new Dragon Ball Z yep Viz really screwed it up). They did the same thing with every other anime, they would just say it sucks because it is in english and make jokes about it by saying the english voices made their ears hurt where they had to turn it off and it would get really annoying. Then when I thought I couldn't hear anything more stupid I was proved wrong. One day at the end of Japanese class these kids were talking to the Japanese teacher and they blamed Toonami for the edits to One Piece. They actually believed Toonami is responsible for the english version of One Piece. I guess when your stuck in fansub land and never leave you don't know anything else.

Wow... the first two rants were okay... the third is a fact of life...

1. Yes. Yes yes yes... I agree with you completely. I myself watch subtitles and dubs. Why? Sometimes I don't feel like reading. On the flip side, I am a very fast reader, and I've taught myself how to read subtitles, i.e., I can almost simultaneously read the subs, and watch the screen at the same time. Not really a talent, but it helps me a lot.
As for fansubs vs. R1... I watch fansubs. Most the shows that I like, I buy when they come out. If I don't like it, I stop watching it... simple. I've probably spent thousands of dollars on my anime collection, and a lot of the shows I haven't personally watched. There are series I buy that I wouldn't watch, but I know someone who might be interested. I know for a fact that I own at least a dozen series that I haven't seen, but that I have loaned to friends, who watched and loved them, and plan on buying the series when they can afford it. This makes it worthwhile for me. Smile
Anti- people... hmm... well, yeah, I'm a guy. I watch some hentai. Now, I'm not saying all guys do. But, I'm a guy, so you shouldn't be surprised. Do I like yaoi? No. Do I like yuri? Eh... I haven't really seen or read anything that was that great. I guess the Strawberry Panic manga is coming out in the US, and I'll be buying that, but I'm not really a huge fan of yuri... I am personally against homosexuality, and that includes the glorification of this lifestyle in anime and manga. Do I have a problem with gays/lesbians in real life? No. I know a few guys who are gay, they're cool, but I don't make a point of hanging out with them... And sadly, I don't know any lesbians... Sad
Fanboys/girls... these people annoy me to no ends. Have I seen the creepy paddle girl? No, and I'm pretty sure that's a good thing. But I do get tired of being in the manga section of Borders, and hearing girls behind me, or around the corner, gushing over how some guy is SO CUTE... yeah, I read/watch series with 'cute' or 'hot' girls in them, but that's not the main reason. I look for good artwork and good story-telling. Sometimes, I can deal with bad artwork. But if the story is bad, then what's the point? The fan-girls/-boys who rave about anything, manga, anime, or characters, need to get themselves under control. This is a huge part of why so many people I know refuse to watch anime. They think it's all childish (due in large part to the popularity of shows like Pokemon), or it's all random fighting (thanks to DBZ), and that none of it could have any worthwhile story to tell.

2. I agree with you as well. When someone just says Naruto is stupid, or calls people who like it Narutards, what does that say about the person calling names? It just means they are judgemental. If you have to attack a show's fans, then it's not really the show you hate, it's how popular it is. If you really don't like the show, give articulate reasons, not, "Oh, Naruto sucks, cause it's fillers now..." That's not a valid excuse. Did you like it before? And what about the people who say they'll never watch another episode? I'm assuming you've watched some if you'll never watch 'another', so why did you stop? Did you find the show stupid? Or do you not like shounen action series in general? If that's the case, then you shouldn't even feel the need to comment on it, since you don't like that type of show, and therefore, your opinion isn't really valid to fans of the genre. But, say, you like One Piece and Naruto, but not Bleach, and can give specific reasons why you don't like Bleach, rather than attacking it's fans. People will tend to respect you (whether online respect matters to you or not...), simply for being able to state your opinions clearly. But if you trash shows like Ouran, Kanon, or Reideen simply because you don't like that genre, you should really just ignore comments about it, or just say you don't like that type of show, rather than saying it sucks. Since a show's greatness differs from person to person, we should all refrain from insulting shows, period. State your greivance, and move on. And the same goes for claiming greatness for a show. Just because you, and everyone you know, loves a certain series and thinks it's a masterpiece, doesn't mean every other person is going to agree, or even care. I have this girl who is constantly telling me to watch this or that series, saying it's one of the best series ever, and that I have to watch it (i.e. Shuffle, Air, etc.). Or is surprised when I say I haven't seen Fate/Stay Night, Mai-HiME/Otome, or Haruhi Suzumiya...

What I'm trying to say is, everyone likes different things, and you shouldn't force others to watch, or like, what you do. This goes for subs/dub, fansub/R1, hentai/non-hentai. The only other thing I have to add is, if you watch fansubs, please, PLEASE, buy DVD's to support the industry. Otherwise, you really are just stealing.

Ah, but the same thing happens within fansub-land as well; when the first season of Girls Bravo aired, some thought that a particular fansub group had edited the video to produce a "steamy" censored version, when in fact it was produced that way for the Japanese TV version. It doesn't get much more Rolling Eyes-ing than that, does it? I've tired of the fansub debate as well; it's become too black-and-white. As the rant said, either you're a saint for never touching fansubs, or else typing "xdcc send" makes you an irredeemable pirate. Granted, there is a vocal minority of "I love fansubs and I won't buy anything or even watch the DVD-versions for free" fans, but many fansub watchers (and fansub creators) buy at least some of what they watch. I know "some" isn't right in the eyes of the law, but it's better than nothing, isn't it?

Behavior of fans at conventions: I agree, there's a lot of craziness going on, and like golem22 said, some of us have to take what we can get in terms of opposite-sex contact. Luckily, I've never been randomly glomped, paddled, or otherwise attacked at any convention, though I've never been to Otakon, which is apparently infamous for that kind of stuff. (Even at Akon, which Zac and other industry figures have described in highly unflattering terms, I didn't encounter it.) But the "cut loose in confined space" behavior of many fans is why I don't go to the "OMG Important!!" convention events like dances or the cosplay contest. I'd rather spend my time either with my friends, in video rooms, at low-key interesting panels, in the dealers' room, or the hotel bar, which can be a good place to exchange a few words with Guests without waiting in huge lines.

The convention rant is for another time but suffice to say Otakon is lacking in the order department. I know running a con is hard work, I've helped at one, but it seems like the people at Otakon put the amount of effort you would into a con 1/3 of its size. Don't get me wrong though, due to its size there's almost always a panel or screening worth going to. Just don't expect any kind of help from the staff. I second your idea of hanging out at the hotel bar. The VA guests at Nekocon stayed at the next door hotel and hung out in the bar at night after the con closed. I even got to talk to 1 or 2 of them. It was laid back and very nice. If you hate the OMG cut loose behavior Zalis try cons like Nekocon which are smaller, if you haven't already. Instead of one with 25 thousand why not one with 25 hundred. Much easier to deal with.

Rant #1 was probably aimed, at least in part, at folks just like me. Oh well, I still enjoy beating a dead horse once in a while and a garden variety rant fest isn't going to stop me. Besides, this was in many ways just a much longer version of the post where both adonis and I reminded you that 'complaining about complainers' is itself a ticket into the complainer brotherhood. Perhaps the lesson is better taught by example rather than imitation?

Rants 2&3 were just too far off my radar to register. After last week's 'dare to do better' quip from Zac I figured we'd be in for some good ranting with new angles from new sources. Sadly that just didn't seem to pan out as I had originally hoped.

Rant 1)

He comes across a little whiney but I guess I agree with what he’s saying. I’m a Dub fan. If people prefer subs that’s their choice. I will admit I do have a problem with people who blatantly refuse to ever watch Dubs. As for fansubs, I don't care if people disagree with me, I don’t like people Judging others though for what they choose to do. These are a few examples where I would genuinely try and ‘convert’ people. Other than that though, they’re entitled to their own opinions. Ofcourse that doesn’t mean I’m not gonna discuss these issues and point out some of the arguments for other ways of thinking. At the end of the day though it’s up to them.

I love how he rants about people bashing people choices, and yet goes on to bash peoples reasons for fansubs. Pretty weak. If you’re gonna rant about this subject you should really try and leave your opinions on these issues out of it.

Also, this is hardly isolated to just Anime fans. This is just one of the things that’s wrong with people in general. We all feel the need to force our beliefs on others. You might just hear it more cause you’re exposed to Anime more. Plus since a lot of fans are on the Internet where nobody is afraid to speak their mind and be rude...

By the way, this may be bad but it is NOT the reason why people look down on Anime fans. People look down on Anime fans because of 50% ignorance. People don’t know much about Anime and when that’s the case it seems pretty weird. Then its also 50% just the fact that as much as we all love it, Anime is nerdy. Face it, its true.

Rant 2)

If you’re insulting and rude, people will think you’re a jackass.

Wow! Thanks so much ranter! I never realized that. Of course you’re not actually gonna change anyone’s mind. That was basically one of those ‘Yeah No Kidding” rants.

Rant 3)

He he he… She said ‘Balls’

Seriously though, That was kinda all over the place. If your friend is Immature and that’s really annoying either get over it or stop hanging around with em. I’m really not clear what trying to say about Yoai.

Funny I don't remember mentioning you 10yen or anyone else. Let me re-read my own rant.....hmmmmm.....nope no names listed. So I'd appreciate it if you could please not put words in my mouth. If I had wanted to direct it, or any part, at you, or anyone else, I simply would have said your name. I don't play games, leave hints, or act subtly. If I wanted to say something to you I simply would, ask Selenta or Nagisa about my big mouth. As for complaining about complainers, I'll say what I said last time, oh well. Technically yes I am but you know what, as I said before I'd rather be known for complaining about the idiocies and ignorance of people then for acting like them, or saying nothing at all.

.

I wasn't actually bashing anyone. That was color commentary. If it came off as bashing then I should've worded my cynic humor better. I was saving my actual views for the thread Twisted Evil Obviously this isn't limited to only anime fans. Since this is anime forum though I only mentioned anime. What I mentioned is not the ONLY reason anime fans are looked down upon but it is ONE of them. I thought sticking to my own rant would be smart and not branching off into all sorts of other reasons and ideas. It's not as simple as being nerdy and ignorance of the masses. I have no doubt both are also reasons why people frown upon anime but it's not that simple. People like those I mentioned do have an impact. Those are the same people who act like this in your bookstores, Best Buy, and anywhere else. If you think this kind of behavior has no impact on why people look down upon anime, and its viewers, you need to get out more. I never said it's the only reason, but it is one of them among many others. I focus on this reason because this one can be easily changed if people wanted to. Can't change the fact anime is nerdy, or myself for watching it, but the fans who act like ignorant fools can change that and it would at least help other people's opinions some. As everyone keeps telling me it's a losing battle, and while it may be forgive me if I live in my own world of optimism and self denial that just maybe people might change. I ran out of liquor so I need my self denial to help me sleep thank you.
