| Interesting that she talk about manga in a bad way since France loves reading it. Does she know that there are other types than the mature types? This really saddens me when politicians who talk badly about something when they don't really know the full facts. |

| Depends on what her political views and issues are. I'm sure manga is not her main point of concern, though it's probably up on her priority list. With her criticism of manga, she probably won't garner too many votes from manga readers and fans. | ||||

| Ségolène Royal is a Socialist.
http://en.wikipedia.org/ This is kind of conflicting opinion because after reading Royal and Taro's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taro_Aso) political views, I like Royal political views better. So she hate TV and Anime boo hoo. Taro Aso hate EVERYBODY and EVERTHING that is not japanese. Let keep this in mind. |

| What's the rate of violent crime/sexual assault in REAL LIFE in Japan vs. France? I would bet that Japan's is lower than France's. France has its own social problems, big ones, its politicians have no business criticizing other nations. Still, the book was written in 1989, maybe she's changed her views? (or not).
Although I have to admit, I recently saw a Japanese commercial with anime girls in cow-colored bikinis being "milked"...it was a milk ad, and rather a bit much in my opinion (objectification of women and all that). So I don't know. |

| The French Presidential Election itself is a whole other matter. Mr. Sarkozy seems to have a better grasp on issue. But his positions on some issues are quite authoritarian almost. | ||||

| Yeah, I see what you mean, and I agree, but the reason people aren't commenting on that is because Aso isn't the main focus point of this topic. It wasn't he who made the comments. I personally don't care who told Royal to read more manga to discover the truth, just that someone did. No matter who you could swap Taro Aso out for, it doesn't make Royal's coments any more right.
Still, if it would please you (and you know I want to), I will say... Taro Aso: "one nation, one civilization, one language, one culture and one race" I SO want to move there and further interfere with his "perfect society". What can I say? I want some of those sweet Japanese living standards.

| Sorry for the belated comments on my previous "pony up" post. Thanks for providing a few examples as I'd forgotten completely about that Pokemon thing and I hadn't heard about the girl who got in trouble over Naruto. (You know, if I already had my degree and a license to practice, I so would have taken that girl's case for free. The people running that school should be ashamed and jobless.)
Repeatedly in posts I keep reading people blaming "soccer moms" and "fanatical Christians" for various things and it was just starting to sound like pure biased BS to me rather than a rational denouncement of a few idiots. I know women who would be described as "soccer moms" and not a one of them has ever expressed any crazy views on entertainment media in general nor anime/manga specifically. And being a Christian, I am slightly defensive about my fellow co-religionists. (It doesn't help that Christian bashing is largely accepted either.) Also, Fiction Alchemist, thanks for your post on stereotypes, especially the one about southerners. Believe it or not, that one is very strong in some circles. The children of one of my distant relatives actually didn't believe they were in Georgia when their family came to visit because they thought that everyone who lived in this state lived in shacks without electricity and that there weren't paved roads and such. And on topic, Aso isn't exactly the best person to be saying anything about another country's potential leader, but it doesn't change the fact that Royal's comments were inappropriate. Truth is truth regardless of who speaks it. Being overly in love with your own nation and culture is pretty bad, but being bigoted toward someone else's nation and culture seems worse to me. While I certainly love the U.S., I'm not going to automatically assume that every other nation and culture is inferior. Everyone and everything has it's strong points and it's weak points. |

| I have to say I hate it when anyone on the board brings up the usual "Oh snap the soccer moms and christians are going to get us all!" and then goes on to complain about how people should be more objective and open-minded. There are fanatics in every single niche, group, sub-culture, whatever, out there, and people just have to deal with it and learn to not judge a group by select instances with some of its members. A professor of mine told us once that streotypes only get their power because they are based in truth, but that the truth is not absolute. But the ignorant people don't realize that second part. Fun fact about streotypes: The word stereotype is actually from the comics industry, it's the name of the plate in the ancient days that would be used in the printing press to make the comics At anyrate, this is just another case of a politician trying to play to a certain group of voters. The voters she wants to appeal to don't want to hear about the good things going on in manga, they want to hear about the "evil" things and about how this candidate is going to swoop in and save all the French from hentai. |

Richard J: Thanks a lot. I do try.
====== Now, my reply to dmanjb: Which part do you think I may have been kidding about? I was kidding about NONE of it. Are you offended that I would want to live in Japan? I'm not just some uneducated anime geek, I'll have you know. I'm highly interested in Japanese culture, and I honestly like the way things are run in Japan. It's not perfect, but no place is. Also, don't mistake me for not being able to see the good in other countries. I'm not a blind Japanophile either. Do you think that the quote isn't Aso's? You posted the Wikipedia link where I found it. I don't like the quote, and I think he's being intolerant. Alternatively, are you implying that I should think every Japanese is intolerant because of that? If so, shame on you. If there is some sort of misunderstanding here, then I apologize, but I don't see how I could be mistaking your post for anythin than what I see it as. EDIT: Ah, wait... I see! Perhaps you are referring to my joke about interfering with Aso's view of a "perfect society". If so, yeah, that little bit was a joke.
