Wait a sec ... Sydney is another of the most expensive cities in the world ... how can you be paying only $280 a month on rent there?! |

People working at fast food places can not get a liveable apartment in San Francisco. A studio (zero room apartment) in the city runs around $1300-2000. I've shared a studio before which really sucks if someone is cooking breakfast a few feet away from you while you are trying to sleep. When I finally moved out of there I got a decent deal by spending $600 a month to live in the living/dining room of a tiny two bedroom place. I would sleep on a blanket (not enough room for a bed) on the floor in the corner while all of my personal belonging (didn't own much back then was stored in a closet. I will add that I was making 20k at the time and didn't own a car. Now I happily live in a house (I live in the dining room) with five other guys, although the number has been higher in the past. I believe that this is the situation in much of Japan, and I don't think it's fair or polite to say that we are not looking hard enough or not doing a little hard work since your living situation is a bit different in your town. |

That's $280 a week, my friend. Don't believe me? Check out the prices at unilodge.com.au Yeah. It's screwing me over. Wait, I should add that it's AUS$280, though. What's that in US$ I wonder... |

Oh! Okay, mea culpa, I thought you meant as a monthly rate. Here in a northern part of Toronto, my girlfriend and I pay collectively $780 (Canadian, natch) per month, plus utilities (which have been getting horrendously expensive, but our landlady is finally starting to do something about that ....), for a two-bedroom apartment that's the basement of a house. Definitely a bargain, given the space we have, plus the driveway with room for both of our cars. But it's a renter's market these days, as long-term renters have been buying shiny new condos. It's getting wickedly expensive to buy a place in Toronto, but not so bad to rent one. |

Most of the manga cafes nowadays have night packages (for example 3 hours, 6 hours and 8 hours option), which means that they are actively targeting people who wish to spend a night there. The cubicles have reclining chairs - not to full horizontal, but 150 -160 degrees anyway. They cater to people who have missed the last train (been there), or otherwise need to spend the night away from home and can't be bothered to use a business hotel. If there are a few regulars mixed in - well, they pay the same money. While travelling in Japan, manga cafes were really handy for just stopping over at a city between transports, i.e. waiting for the first morning train/bus, but not really for a good night's sleep (for that, I used hostels). As for popularity, at least one place was full for the night, so I couldn't get in. To get the news into perspective, here's a recent article from The Japan Times dealing with the same phenomenon. These people are staying at MacDonalds, but the reasons are the same: Quote: "It takes 400,000 yen to 500,000 yen in 'key money' and deposits to rent an apartment. But these people aren't regular company staff. I suppose in a year they might earn a little over 1 million yen, and there's no way for them to accumulate half that amount." (In dollars, that makes about 3500-4000 dollars, sans the actual rent.) In the background of all this is the relatively recent increase in the use of temps and part time workers at Japanese workplaces. They lack the social benefits given to regular workers, and since they do not have a secure income for the years to come, banks are not willing to give them housing loans. As the Japanese society is still mainly geared towards the traditional regular "salariiman", the new "irregular" working class does face some major difficulties. |

| Hey, whatever happened to capsule hotels? Don't they lose a fuckton of business now? | ||||||

| Man am I glad I don't live where I have to give away key money just for the "gift" of securing a place to live. I'm also glad I live where taxis don't cost so much that I'd end up stranded if I ever stayed out too late. | ||||||

| That's horrible. In Canada, most homeless people flee to Victoria (near Seattle, Washington) because it has the warmest weather in the winter. Some people even freeze to death in the winter. If I were the owner I'd definatly let them stay. I might even let them work there if they don't have a job. | ||||||

http://www.xe.com/ 280.00 AUD = 231.380 USD Or 1.00 AUD = 0.826231 USD 1.00 USD = 1.21054 AUD Which is not a great exchange rate but I've seen bigger gaps between the AUD to USD in the past (and if you want to get depressed just do this for USD to GBP (which is United Kingdom Pounds) |

So, after the 8 year reign of Bush II some Americans are finally opening their eyes. Global capitalism is a system designed to raise the cost of live, and lower the salaries, a new feudalism. That’s all. |
