aww, i really thought lucky star was doing great. i don't know if their outlook was to expect another haruhi suzumiya, but thats quite impossible; or a large wall ahead to perform as great. I thought lucky star was a very funny, although when i first heard of it, i expected a bit more of the "genshiken" treatment in the lvl of otakuness. Yet, what came out was a soft comedy that didn't disappoint. Well regardless i loved loved kanon... uguu. Well, at least lets hope we don't see another "Osamu Kobayashi".

ps. kagami owns uguu

Then why do you keep saying "uguu"?

The Haruhi Encyclopedia entry now has "production" in Yamamoto's title to indicate he was taking orders from the overall director of the series, Tatsuya Ishihara.

I was quite bothered to see Yamamoto's name was above Ishihara's when I entered "Series Director" for him, but I didn't want to create more new task titles back then... (just ask woelfie and you'll know how problematic they are). Now we've got several issues raised:

1. Should all enshutsu credits under the task "(Series) Director" be moved to "(Series) Production/Producing/Technical Director"? We've got to find out those first...

2. "Series Production/Producing/Technical Director" has to be raised to the primary staff and above "Episode Director," in the same manner that "Series Composition" should be above "Script / Screenplay."

(On a side note: I'm not too fond of "scenario" that many Japanese credits use in place of script / screenplay. It's like using "roadshow" for premiere and "onanism" for masturbation -- while correct in some ways, they are rarely used in today's English)

3. I've seen movie credits with no kantoku at all but one enshutsu only. Should the person be credited simply as "Director" or "Production/Producing/Technical Director"?

Yeah, those are lots of tricky issues with vagaries in both Japanese and English. (For example, a television director's duties on the American television series Heroes is less a (series) director's duties on Evangelion, but more than or the same as an episode director's duties on an Evangelion episode.) I'll try to write some notes in this thread later today.

Okay, most of the Lucky Star haters have one flaw: they based it on the first episode, especially those first ten minutes that are unanimously bad. The second and third episodes really delivered, and I'd be very saddened to see a departure from the wordplay and millions of references that are really starting to sink in to me. Azumanga Daioh is far too slow...it's like Osaka slow, and I love fast comedy.

Fixen hit the nail on the head. The first episode wasn't impressive at all, but episodes 2 and 3 were really good. If you don't like dialougue drive comedy, then stay away. If you do like dialougue-driven comedies, yet haven't give Lucky Star the chance to make up for it's bad first episode, at least watch episode 2. It saddens me to hear that people think this is the worst anime of the season, when there is much worse.

Episode 4 was even better than episode 3, don't forget that. This series is really going nowhere but uphill. Am I the only lucky star fan that doesn't like lucky channel? lol sorry I'm just not one for running gags. I always watch the episode then skip to the karaoke.

Not that I cared for KyoAni; thanks in part to the monsterously vocal and hideous fanbase. It's one of the reasons I couldn't enjoy Haruhi. And they turned Kanon from an otherwise sweet story based on a visual novel into a blueprint for starters of perverted wank-fests everywhere.

Yeah. YouTubes featuring these circus clowns dancing to the Haruhi ending theme song had just turned me off to most anime forever.

That and that being said from me, I thought Lucky * Star was reasonably good. REASONABLE good. (I'm currently on Claymore, Seirei, and Gigantic Formula.)

"Performance issues?" I can understand because of the backlash between Gainax (the collective enemy and exploiter of otaku everywhere) and said otaku. But I would like to know what really happpened. I like to know the details of the events that had folded.

Was the art too bad? Were there not enough panty shots? is "4koma" played out? Was the show too focused on Akira and her assistant?

Or is the bar set too high for the basically harsh "moe" standard. Sad

Even with the new director in place, it is still going to be the same Lucky Star that we all know. The new director change isn't going to change what the anime is since the manga is the basis of the anime. People clamoring for change won't see any at all but just a different name in the credits.

Don't expect changes anyone. The new director will do the anime the same way as the previous director. Even I know that.

What's the lead time for a series like this? I kind of assumed most of the episodes would be either already in the can or in the final stages of production by now, so changing directors now wouldn't affect the episodes that are already made. I don't think it's like South Park where they can literally create episodes in a couple of days. Or is it just that he quit after he worked on episode 4 many months ago and they're just announcing it now?

I've seen up to episode three, and while the show did improve slightly after that unbearably boring first episode, it's still not funny enough to hold my interest. I think the conversation in the first ten minutes of the first episode could have been hilarious if it was handled just a bit differently. They talked about the subject matter with such straight faces and oblivious voices that it was kind of hard to tell if they really were just talking about food or if they were trying to play up some kind of sexual innuendo. (Which the show was obviously attempting to do but failing miserably at.) That scene could have been awesome if the characters more sinister-looking faces or put a little more emphasis on certain words. ("But if you eat it from the big end the gooey stuff leaks out!", "This cone is just too big for my mouth!")

The Lucky Channel segments are the most entertaining part of the show, but I've yet to actually laugh out loud at any of them. (The "I'm popular with pedophiles" comment in episode three did get me to smile, though.) Hopefully with the director change the whole show will be at least as funny as Lucky Channel.

And while I do prefer slapstick black comedies like Puni Puni Poemy and Dokuro-chan, I love anime and television shows in general (like Friends, Seinfeld, and Hidamari Sketch) that can do the conversation-based humor thing well. Lucky Star just doesn't work for me.

After seeing Episode Five (Lucky Channel segment), I'm calling BS on the supposed significance of this. I think it was planned or at least not as serious as it would sound.
