The west is discovering "Girls with Guns", what with this coming hot on the heels of a live adaptation of "Noir". I wonder if this will be a porn film, a la the original anime.

As with the "Noir" remake, it might be fantastic. We'll have to wait and see.

Shark Knight's got some hot girls, but unless there's an R-rated nude version of them on home video, I ain't interested. Cool Still, I figured it was time to bring Kite back, what with that Gunslinger Girl remake, er, Hanna, getting good reviews. Rolling Eyes Not to mention that forthcoming Violet and Daisy thing.

After watching both versions, I gotta say Kite works a lot better without the sex. It really seems like something the director was forced to put in by outside interests (and I think I recall reading something to that effect?)

I didn't see this one coming.

Adapting Kite; that is daring. I really like the original. The director's past credits make me pessimistic, but at least he seems to have some passion for the original. This will presumably be longer than the fifty or so minutes of the edited version of Kite. I hope that he uses that extra time more to emphasize the dark, detached mood and broken characters than the exploding bullets, not that I dn't want plenty of exploding bullets et al too. Kite's story was wisely spare, which I think will add extra challenge to making an adaptation. I'll nevertheless take a position of cautious optimism.

I've never found a direct quotation from Yasuomi Umetsu, but I have heard others, such as Justin Sevakis on the Holiday 2009 ANNCast, say something to the effect that he was forced to make it hentai to get funding and that he prefers the edited version.

For every nickel someone in Hollywood says they "like" or "love" something and don't make anything, I would be swimming in nickels rights about now, lol.

So, the No Doubt music video "Ex-Girlfriend" is not enough anymore, eh? Laughing

There is absolutely nothing in that No Doubt music video that looks even remotely close to Kite.

Why even bring it up? Laughing

I gotta agree with you on that. The only problem for me was leaving out the scene towards the end where spoiler[Akai and Sawa have sex with a beaten up Oburi forced to watch them]. That particular cut is very awkward, the plot makes an inexplicable leap and an important point is left out. On the whole though, the sex scenes just spoiled the flow of the anime.

I... can't even care. There's a slim chance this adaption might be decent. Or maybe we end up with another Dragon Ball Evolution or even merely a forgettable Fist of the North Star live action film. I'm not holding my breath either way. You know, if the thing even gets made. How's that WETA produced Eva film coming with ADV's help? oooooh wait...

Well, that was a horrible video comparison. Though if you watch the actual video, the whole bathroom assassination scene is pretty much lifted right from Kite.

So, is the remake going hentai with all the drugs, brainwashing and sleezy porn or the infinitely better and much preferred -by me- edited version of Kite that A) made sense and B) was a much better movie than the "have to shower after watching" hentai Kite?

To be frank, though, I don't hold out much hope that this will pan out and frankly, why should I care? An incredible animated version of Kite already exists, so it isn't like they're adapting this from a book or manga cold.

As for the director... Hey I'm glad he's seen the anime, but that doesn't mean squat. Any avg. Joe of the street can rent the movie, it doesn't mean the final product (if it gets made) will be any better or worse for it. Hell, I've seen Kite, so does that mean I'm qualified to direct it or that I'd do a good job with it?

Why does it always seem like only shitty directors want to make anime live action films? Honestly the only promising rumored project right now is the Oldboy remake directed by Spike Lee and that's most likely meant to be a remake of the Korean film rather than the manga.

Do you think David Ellis will turn it into a series of films each consisting of the exact same plot line and will simply cycle in new forgettable attractive young people to play out the same rolls over and over again except for one older black man who will appear to explain this plot line to the characters?

If you're claiming that Hanna is in any remote way similar to, or connected to, GG, I want to see your justification. Otherwise stop trying to connect things to anime that have no connection.

And errinundra: "Girls With Guns" films have existed in the West since at least the early '90s, and one could argue that they date back at least to 1986 (i.e. Aliens). So it's hardly like the West is just discovering the genre.

To those of you already giving the whole idea a bad rap, I can tell you this.

From a film student/critic point of view, Ellis' directing is quite good. Keep in mind he is only the director of those movies he directed, not the writer or screenplay artist. If the movie sucks, it's not his fault, as he is only directing a movie. If the the story's bad, he can't do much to save it (see The Final Destination, whereas FD2 was amazing).

I'm looking forward to see how it works out. With an actually worthwhile director on the project, it might actually turn out quite well.
