While going to a certain Blockbuster by my school, I walked by the section where they used to have the anime at, and the shelves were completely cleaned out, and I walked the store to see if they had placed it somewhere else. Couldn't seem to find it, so I wen't to the front desk and asked the girl what happened to their anime section. She replied that they were right next to the games, which was kind of in a hidden spot. So I found them and checked it out, the selection of titles seemed to be greatly reduced since the last time I had looked at that section. I'm thinking they probably moved stuff around, and in the process either got rid of certain titles, lost them, or customers bought them and they haven't bothered to fill back up on their inventory. Has anyone had this kind of situation happen where one day you went into the store and found the anime section gone or reduced?

My blockbuster doesn't even carry them anymore. I was upset and scared when my Tower Records stopped renting anime vhs and then moved the section. When I went there that time they hadn't put it back up yet. I was freaking out because that was the only place at the time to get any. I was only 12-14 mind you so I couldn't order online or drive past where parents would take me.

Yeah when I first got into anime my local Blockbuster had an awesome anime section. It was placed on the wall smack dab in between all the brand new release movies, plus it was quite large for an anime section in the early 90's and they had about 1/2 subtitled and 1/2 dubbed titles; Project A-Ko, Ranma 1/2, Tank Police, Appleseed and many others. It's what helped me discover so many great series and character designers early on in my hobby. Then like for some reason, maybe they changed store managers or some of the tapes weren't getting returned, one day I discovered it was completely dissolved and they no longer carried anime. I was probably one of their top anime rental customers but I moved to Florida temporarily and when I got back was when all the anime was gone I even missed the chance to pick up all those great titles that probably wound up in the bargain bin.

Way to put your Blockbuster's anime section out of business, Past.
I recently walked into a store at the mall that's had a decent bunch of anime since I became a fan in 2000. It was all gone. Other stuff in its place. My heart started beating quicker. Trying not to look panicky, I walked around all the shelves. No anime. Then, I turned to the one place I hasn't looked, and realized that the entire back wall of the store was anime.
Man, did that give me a scare. If anything, they've only increased their selection and needed to devote the wall to it so it had more room. I bought the A-Ko and Gunbuster sets and walked out a happy man. Apparently, they're owned by Suncoast even though the name is different. Also, the employees always seem to appreciate anime. The guy at the counter was telling me he had A-Ko on VHS! With old-school otaku types working there, I think that the future of anime in that store is secure for a while.

When I was in High school, I had rental cards for pretty much every video store in the nearest 3 towns, and rotated where I was getting my anime that week.
But then the whole DVD thing happened, and the anime section pretty much got destroyed in every store (got rid of the VHS and had no DVD to replace them.) Then the Video Update chain went out of business and took most of those rental places with it. Out of all those old stores, only 1's still in business (that I know of- it was a long drive to one blockbuster, so we only went a few times.)
I got lucky tho'... several of the tapes I'd really enjoyed but didn't pick up during the closeout turned up in our local flea market, so I got 'em anyway.
Ironically, the only place i never rented from was the dedicated anime/game store... simply becuase a) it was a 30-45 minute drive, and b) it was 7 dollars for a 3-day rental. Way too much time and money for my parents' tastes.

Who cares? It's Blockbuster. I haven't rented anything from them in years.

Buying anime isn't hard where I live, but renting it is. We have only two video-rental outlets, and neither of them have decent anime sections. And what little they do have is seldom updated.

Oh, this has happened to me time and time again.
We used to have a store called The Warehouse in the town I live in which sold video games (both new and used), music (mostly music though) and DVDs/VHSs, and they used to have a pretty darn good anime section, but when it changed into what is now called Music to the Maxx, It's almost entirely music now, dropped the video games entirely, and kept the DVDs, only NO ANIME SECTION!!!!!
Around about the same our local Shopko, who also had a pretty darn good one, droped their's entirely as well.
We also used to have probably one of the best independent geek stores ever made called the Treasure Trove here in town, and probably had the best selection of anime I think I've ever seen anywhere, and it used to get pretty darn good business too. But not to long after I bought only my frist DVD from them, they mysteriously left town! Of all the darn luck!
I can sympathize with you with Blockbuster though. The selection in our local one is the same as it's always been, but it seems like it's constantly moving around as well. The same is true with our local Top Hat rental store's anime section. In fact, probably the only place in our town that has treated it's anime section the same in our town is our Hollywood Video.
Out in Salt Lake, we used to have a Suncoast and Boarders in a mall that is now being vacated due to reconstruction, and I have no clue what happened to either. Luckly for me The Gateway mall complex out in SLC has a Virgin video/music store that really does have quite the anime selection, the same mall complex also has the SLC Barnes & Noble that has a nice DVD collection as welI must say, and Layton, about 15 min. north of where I live, has a mall complex that has a video/music store called FYE that has an even better anime section. So I've still got places to go for anime, I just have to travel uncomfortably to get it.

Who cares huh? How about people without hundreds of dollars to blow every month on anime, how's that The normal people who have bills to pay and food to buy who can't afford to waste all of their money on dvds so they rent them for a much cheaper price. Those kind of people. Ya know, those not living at home in their parent's house.

Well, we still have the online rental places. I just wish that people would at least rent their anime instead of just downloading it for free.

Netflix is my friend and I will be adding AnimeLane to the list. The have hentai and Asian movies for rent also. I can get all my kung-fu movies now heh. Like Dragon Tiger Gate, awesome movie. Donnie Yen is my God.
I had the torch before. I simply crammed it up my ass to play nice. It's been itchy lately so I pulled it out to club people with it for a while. Even polished it up and waxed it to get a nice glow and shine. That way I can see the horrible distorted faces of the people about to be smote, and so they can see the impending smiting coming for them.

Well thankfully it hasn't happened here yet, the blockbuster here has one shelf dedicated to anime, the one shelf it always had. I hope it stays that way. I did go to FYE and the hentai section was reduced...it is still their but is mixed in with the rest of the real porn.

And what about the same normal people who also have bills and they do get hungry like you, but they can't rent on line (because they don't live in the USA)? Who will weep for us
(and in case you were wondering--no, I don't have hundreds of dollars...not yet anyway)

I never shopped at Blockbuster, but the same thing has happened at my local Best Buy. They used to have both sides of an aisle dedicated to anime. I went in there a couple of weeks ago and found the anime section reduced to only one side. Most of the shelf space was taken up with the "popular" anime shows, such as Naruto and Inuyasha.
I did find a little shop in the mall next to the Best Buy that sells anime. While looking at the anime titles they had on the shelf I was suprised to find hentai scattered throughout the anime section.
