Makoto Shinkai's anime will appeal to Ghibli fans as young Asuna gains entry to the underground land of Agartha.

It is hoped that the same can be said of Shinkai fans as well, and that such fans have the most to look forward to. Needless to say, the diversification of this work's target audience concerns me somewhat.
