I was really bored, and looked up the way UPC codes work, and found something somewhat interesting:

the pic of the bootleg has the UPC 5-96817-00169-4. Technically, that UPC should be a coupon (it starts with a '5') from an unknown company '96817' (to www.upcdatabase.com, anyway) with a value of $0.69....

Just further proof that Amazon doesn't really care if it's a bootleg, eh?

Crawly: Actually, Tokyopop lost the manga license, because of Toei, too. It even got shut down in Japan, because they're trying to shake down the author for more rights. I hear they also rubbed Toriyama the wrong way by doing that Dr. Slump squel without his permission, which is why he's been doing one-shot manga over the last decade or so.

I didn't realize Toei had control over the manga, so that's my mistake. Though I thought you could still get the new version, or at least could not that long ago. It doesn't feel like it's been as long as it has since the boom in Japan with the release of the remastered series on dvd, the live action, and the updated manga. Toei kissed up to her pretty well, though, with the live action series, and that seemed to make her happy for awhile.

Wouldn't it be funny if the unsuspecting buyers of this bootleg could redeem it for 69 cents off the eventual official DVD release? Wink

Actually, I think it'd be funnier if they brought the DVD into the grocery store to get $0.69 off of their next box of Captain Crunch. Razz

Now that just cracks me up. Completely and totally cracks me up. What are they thinking?

I'm a little surprised this ended up being "news," (I certainly didn't see it as such when I posted the initial thread in Retail) but hopefully this will encourage Amazon to do something to rectify the situation. Okay, something more than just acknowledging it's a bootleg. O_o

Oh God, if they had the time to change its title, why not removing it? Unless the page has been hacked, changing the title AND keeping selling it are indicators of an officially sanctioned and approved transaction by higher ups at Amazon. Now it even tells me to buy it together with Cardcaptor Sakura - The Movie 2 - The Sealed Card (Special Edtion) for $94.94.

For those who want to compare the previous version of the page with the current one, click here and here, respectively (a splash page will appear; just ignore it and click the link on that page again).

I have contacted Amazon with a link to the product, a description of the problem, and a notification that people are contacting the rightsholders and the MPAA, and many more are reconsiderring their willingness to purchase anime through Amazon, all sentiments that have been expressed here and elsewhere over this.

Directly contacting them (either by phone or email) is likely to be the fastest way to get the item removed. You can find contact methods for them on the righthand side of the amazon help page.

I can't say I'm too surprised that [This is a known Bootlegging Website] is selling this version of Sailor Stars--awhile back, I did see a 2-disc import of the Hellsing series sold with an official page, not in the Marketplace.

And to think, if people would just go out and download the fansubs digitized from circa 1995 SVHS tapes, there wouldn't be a market for this Sailor Stars bootleg. Incidentally, one thing ANN could do would be to remove the links to [This is a known Bootlegging Website] from the Encyclopedia pages for the DVD releases, which hopefully isn't a manual page-by-page process. That might cut their traffic and anime sales down a bit.
No, Amazon's name is not automatically wordfiltered on these forums, but I'm starting to think it should be

Many of us have been doing just that. Various responses received have been posted on the thread in the Retail forum.

I just wanted to say that I recommended to amazon that they change the title to "Complete Bootlegged Boxset" through their "update product info" link, with the intention of some fool proofreader picking up on it and maybe suggesting to his/her superiors that the item get pulled ... but apparently that person did not get it, and they just made the change freely.... how sad is that!?!?! Shocked

Wow that's even cheaper than the "suggested" retail price of $3.00 Laughing

I honestly think that this thread itself and the other one is generating far more advertisement for this product than the Encyclopedia. Granted it's all people who know buying this bootlegged set is wrong but I'm betting that at least someone has gone out and bought legit copies of Sailormoon because of the attention being paid to it.

Anyone want to play a game of "guess the stupidest update an Amazon clickthough editor will approve"?
