Yeah I know, I wasn't calling it the worst, or even "bad" per se. I just wanted to express my view that I believe the end is nigh for Anime, so we should enjoy it while we can before it gets banned.

OK, so I MAY be using hyperbolic language here Wink , but the basic sentiment is real. Someone, somewhere, WILL at the very least ATTEMPT to take us down for their own personal reasons. It is like the sun - I know it will die, but I'm comfortable in knowing that it won't be soon. I hope Anime is like that. I really do, cause I like Anime - and sleep.

If you want to see a REAL feline, check out Answerman's Column on the 9th of September 2005. THAT is a feline. A hairless ugly cat/dog/rat hybrid? Deserves my pity, not my love.

My manga and anime collections are on an eternal cycle of being re-read and re-watched. I figure I might as well get my money's worth out of them.

I assume nobody here has heard of Sam the dog?

Since nobody's commented on it yet, I have to agree whole-heartedly with Zac about the Junkers Come Here DVD cover. What makes it worse is that it's actually a really great movie, but nobody ever wants to watch it because of that stupid cover. Scenario:

Friend: "Nice anime collection. You have anything that's good?"

Me: "Oh, this movie!" (Pulls out Junkers.) "It's this really touching film about a child dealing with divorce. Very subtle and mature."

Friend: (Looks at cover.) ... ... ... "Do you have anything else?"

That is how I feel about this week's banner. Not as good as last week, Matt.

Yeah, I'll admit that it is quite a step down from last week's Vandread banner. It'll take something absolutely great to top that one.

EDIT: I'll be sure to make more time for banner-making next week. I kinda rushed this one, this week having been a hectic one.

OK, I agree - Sam the Dog (what an innocent sounding name!) is the ugliest dog ever. In fact, it may be the ugliest "thing" ever. Amazing that such a creature could be loved at all. A true testament to humanity, if you ask me. Beauty and the beast has NOTHING over this.

As for Tsubasa Chronicles, there is virtually no chance of the fundraiser ever getting enough money, though the usual losers and perpetual optimists will no doubt send in their money.

Such campaigns have worked in the past, Roswell comes to mind, where fans managed to extend the series by two seasons. But the Japanese do not care for western fans like the Americans care for western fans.

It seems that although MurasakiSuishou hasn't been posting lately, she's at least still around to submit rants. Cool

I sometimes think along the same lines as the ranter... some of my DVDs DO go un-re-watched, and I too think it's a shame.

However, there are some real gems in there that I'll watch over and over, even if I have to wait awhile for them to "recharge" so they don't get old.

Just know that there's going to come a sick day, or a rainy day, when no one else is around to do stuff with and you've got nothing else to do, you'll look over at that shelf of yours and say "Hmmmm... I haven't watched FMA in quite some time. I have a whole day ahead of me.... I think I'll start watching it again!"

I really agree with the poster who brought up showing them to friends. That's a great way to get some more mileage out of your DVDs, especially if you've got something they either haven't seen or haven't seen in a long time.

Along these lines, my friends and I have been trying to get together for an Evangelion marathon for a couple years now -_-;; Still hasn't happened.

Ah covers....they really don't bother me that much. Only when its something off like the frist Solty Rei cover.

oh..i didn't know Tsubasa got canceled. The show did seem to move slowly through the frist season and I can only image thats what happened during the second.

Dear God i'm one step away from Otakudom. All I'm missing are the Figures. This is not what I wanted to be when I grew up. Wink

As for: Nymphet...when I read the summary I think of young girls who get crushes on their teachers. I remember a girl in my class (fourth grade) who loved our male teacher. She was a mini stalker. Could it just be a story that pokes fun at this girls' advances? Does it really have to be as bad as it seems?

Sure it could intrest someone but young kid get crushes on older people all the time. Like other young kids this girl will probably grow out of it...or something. Could it just be a comedy like parts of NHK? (Even though yes I realize its a real "problem") Sorry to brust your bubble but I think i'll buy it. Seems like a weird story.

That creature looked like it might have drowned and been reborn.

Hmmm...for the ranter. Why do I buy? I buy to own. It costs a lot but I like to collect things. I have moments where I go back and watch/read some of my old stuff but its almost rare. Unless its a show I really fell in love with (ex:Rvyuis) then I re-watch it at least twice a year. The others collect dust.

Renting to me got tiring and boring. I rent something for $8 (blockbuster) and then I return it five days later. A few weeks after that I feel like watching the scene where the girls dance and the dvd is back at the store. I either rent it again or try to find it on the net.

Someday I hope to have a whole room filled to the brim with stuff from my travels and i'd like the anime/manga protion to be the biggest. Who knows? a few years down the line maybe i'll open a rental shop Smile

Nice column this week Zac. Cool banner too. =Anime smallmouth=

Maybe we'll get lucky and nobody will buy it

As I've heard from some (online) friends, their local Boarders have refused to stock it because of its content, so it has that going against it. Regardless, I'm going to check my local bookstore tomorrow and see if they have it. If not, I'll just get it online.

The content isn't honestly as bad as people make it out to be (nowhere near most yaoi). The only reason it's really getting so much attention is because it really is the first of its kind to make it over to the states.

It is nowhere near being porn. You'll be able to find far more explicit titles on regular bookstore's shelves.

According to this cover, this is a thrilling movie about a pedantic dog who will angrily correct your pronunciation if you get his name wrong. CALL ME YOON-KERS!

Laughing Hah, hah, I never thought of it that way when I saw the little speech bubble. It just always made me think that they were trying to target a larger audience than just anime fans, particularly an audience of children. It's too bad that people do "judge an anime by its cover." Sure, nice art is an awesome plus, especially since one of the most appealing things about anime is that it's moving art, but it's not really necessary, in my opinion. As a lifelong animal fan and a much more recent anime fan (I believe I picked up Junkers when I was around the four year and something mark...I'm not totally sure), I just had to see an anime dog on the cover to be interested in it. Of course, I did think the speech bubble was a little much, and it's kind of funny how they turned Junkers into a girl for the cover picture, but I didn't buy it for the cover. Actually, I really like the top part of the back of the cover with the picture of Hiromi running after Junkers with the sweet little bit of writing that makes me think of my own pets. It really is unfortunate that people won't watch it just because of it's cover. Which I guess leads me to the animal pictures...

Dude, Zac, you think that your animal pictures are stupid? Anime cry I really do enjoy them and look forward to them a lot. And I am quite fascinated by the turn towards animals that aren't universally thought of as "cute" or "cool" or even "beautiful." Especially the one last week. The animal fan in me was telling me that that wasn't a gazelle, but I wasn't totally sure, so I did some research, and, lo and behold, I found out that it was a type of antelope, just as a gazelle is, but that it is a different type of antelope that's called a klipspringer (means "rock jumper"). I was very happy to have seen the picture of that little one so that I could learn about an animal I'd never known about before. Thank you very much for using that picture. As for the picture of that cat...I want to give it a hug or a sweater. It looks like a Sphinx that maybe got a recessive gene that caused it to have some hair. It looks rather cute, especially it's face because it kind of looks like it's got a beard. I am reminded of the time I gave a report on cats in elementary school and I had to defend the Sphinx when I showed my classmates a picture of one. They thought it was ugly, and I didn't, and boy do I get defensive over animals. Anime smile Much, much, much, much more defensive than I get over anime, but then animals are living beings with value in and of themselves.

You know, that essay (I wouldn't call it a rant, really) reminded me of thoughts that I sometimes have about my little anime and manga collection. But I know that if I had never gotten into anime and manga that there just would have been more novels and other books in their place. Stories, whether in novel, anime, or manga form, just mean so much to me that if I encounter a story that I know I will really want to read/watch again, then I want to own it so that I have it. I mean, when I first watched RahXephon, I knew even before I saw the end of the series that it was probably going to be an anime that I would want to watch again and to keep because it had touched me so deeply. I guess if something moves me emotionally, I just really, really treasure it. My collection is small because I only buy what truly moves me or captures my imagination. I don't buy anime or manga to have a physical disc or book sitting on my shelf; I am buying what in the end is truly priceless and goes beyond the physical. Smile

What is it about Solty Rei? I remember Zac mentioning it as well, how the first cover was unintentionally funny or something like that. But what about it? What makes it so funny?

Maybe I don't have the requisite sense of humour or something.

(Please note, I do realise she is looking at his exposed crotch...)

It ruins the joke if you have to point it out. You are on the right track though, just stick your head in the gutter a bit more.

Buying DVDs:
There are probably four motives I have in the purchasing of DVD's:
First, is to show off. While my own collection is quite modest compaired to most, I still always step back to admire it when I add a new volume to its ranks.
I stare at it and go "Wow, girl, you have awsome taste, there."
And when people come over, and want to watch a movie, I take great pride in saying "Come over here, then. I have a fairly good DVD collection."
I, thus far, have not rewatched most of my DVD collection, but my secondary motive is "This show is SO GOOD, that one day I may want to watch it again!" So, I buy them, just in case.
Third, so that I can recomend and share the shows I enjoy with others. If you watch a show with someone who hasn't seen it yet, you can re experiance the feeling of watching it for the first time through their eyes. So I take GREAT pleasure in getting people to watch shows I have already seen with me, and having the DVD's around makes this easier.
Lastly, I like to support the industry. I watch alot of fansubs, I will admit, and I feel it is my duty to give some money back. I probably dont give as much back as I should, but I do give more back then I can afford. I try to always buy shows that I enjoyed through fansubs when they come out on DVD, because I do belive in giving money to the people who brought me the show.
Yeah, I have spent a LARGE amount of money on this stuff. Yeah, it may be a waste.
But alot of people maintain collections as their hobby. I collect books, DVD's and CD's. Expensive, but what isnt?

The questions were kind of blah this week. The flake was silly.

Lolicon: Creepy, but Im not too worried about it. They could never ban manga, they can just put out a social stigma about it, and I have never been one to care overly much about social stigmas.

What do you mean? Are you referring to his hand inside his coat, "feeling himself"? Come on, if you won't tell me I'll have to go look for it myself!

You know Zac, I was expecting you to give us a picture of an anteater, in accordance with the flake's letter; but the semi-hairless cat (at least I think that's what it is) was even better.

@Nymphet
Every time I see that I think of Nymphetamine; quite possibly the greatest song/album title ever.

@rant:
There are more expensive hobbies that people have; there are some who buy several of those $500,000 sports cars like Lamborghini and Ferrari and never ever drive them; instead letting them sit in the driveway while they drive something else. In that sense, anime isn't all that bad.
