Seriously? They stock pedophilic porn at my local bookstore? I must have missed that while browsing through the cookbooks. I think that the explicitness of the title isn't the main issue here; it's the content. I've never seen nor heard of Nymphet before now, so I realize I may be speaking out of turn or flat-out ignorantly, but basing a manga series around a 3rd grader who's Hot for Teacher is just asking for trouble, whether they finally do it or not. It's the same sort of taboo subject that made folks like me jittery when they released Koi Kaze. I think there are plenty of other unlicensed series out there that would be more profitable and less of an unexploded-landmine-risk that companies can release. Like Zac said, this is a Pandora's Box that should just stay closed. If folks like it that much, they can always get an import from the Internet. |

I meant more explicit titles, not more explicit loli titles. But if you count just underage as being loli, than Negima would qualify as being a more explicit loli title. |

But those people are wealthy, meaning they can have a Ferrari 550 Maranello AND Anime. I was thinking of more grounded habits/hobbies. Like heroin, cocaine, "P", even smoking. Those are expensive enough that a normal person cannot be an addict while spending money on Anime (in itself an addiction). Hey, that's a thought. Who here is addicted to heroin? .............. .............. .............. Not many, I suspect. There simply isn't the room for two addictions in a college kid's life. And so we choose an expensive pastime that wrecks our bank balances, but not our bodies. Geez, don't know what set that on. Had one two many, I guess. |

I enjoyed the rant. The topic was thought provoking and the style was casual and pleasant. In all honesty, I think this week's ranter deserves a prize more than the one from last week, but that's not for me to decide.

In regards to the rant:
Although my collection is pretty much dominated by manga (I have recently amassed over 100 volumes!), I know it is nowhere near some other people's shelves, however I don't think you have to constantly compare your own with others. Just buy what you like, and if you like it enough, you'll make the time to rewatch or reread your favorite series. I know I am constantly rereading my manga volumes, especially with the ones I am currently collecting and waiting two, three, or even fourth months between new releases. It's an excuse to refresh your memory and you get your money's worth out of the manga by rereading it! Btw, that kitty picture made me almost laugh out loud. I wasn't expecting that even after the flakes complaint about ugly animals I had a feeling Zac would post something....shocking... Regardless, I have a soft spot in my heart for all cats, even the ones with imperfections! |

I don't know what the ranter is talking about - I make it a point to watch my entire anime collection once a year. I think I can afford to do that and not get tired because I have such an extensive collection now. And there's a pride in ownership and having the discs at my fingertips. I even re-read my manga now and then. I get plenty of mileage out of my anime and manga.
Anime is not expensive. I'm sorry, it just isn't. And if you can't afford it, if it's too inconvenient or you'd rather spend your money on something else, feel free to - or just go without. I know "going without" is a foreign concept to most Americans, but I still believe in when I can't afford something, that's it, nothing I can do, so I go without. Or I save up my money until I can. If I didn't thing anime was worth my money I wouldn't buy it. I laugh at the people who moan about how expensive anime is. Without all the great discounts out there on anime, with sites like AnimeNation and AnimeOneStop practically bending over backwards to save you cash, I find it hard to believe a person can't spare a portion of paycheck or a little loose pocket cash for a DVD. Trying to get the whole series? A boxset will come out, eventually. You just want to buy from the store? Then expect to pay around thirty dollars for a disc that might just have three episodes on it. If it has two, don't buy it in the store. Simple as that. The anime licensors are practically bleeding for you to buy their wares. You think FUNimation execs are living in rooms at the Ritz Carlton? You think BONES is in Japan bathing in champagne? Anime is a labor of love. There are more profitable businesses to get in that are probably much easier to get into. Can't afford to buy anime? Tough. Go without. Meanwhile, try buying something that you believe will have the most re-watch value. It's what I try to do. I also stay away from shows that are 100+ episodes, because I could be buying several different shows with the price of buying all those discs for a long one. I would only buy a long running show if I knew there was a particular arc or some particular episodes I enjoyed in the show, and buy that. |

Of course, in some countries anime (and related merchandise) is not as widely available and I find I always have to import the products that I want to buy. This really can turn out to be quite expensive... |

I liked the Kiwi as well and the baby gazelle wasn't really that bad either. Btw, I was surprised to find out how big Kiwi's are. I always thought of them as a smaller sized bird similar to Pheasants but they actually seem to be quite a bit bigger than that (though they probably come in several sizes) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiwi .
As for the cat - all I have to say is yikes! |

I never read any scanlations of Nymphet, but I have seen individual pages posted on the internet of what were presumably the most shocking contents. Highlights includes: the girl asking the teacher to pick up a pencil from under her desk so he'll get an eyeful of her panties when he does, dropping her panties to her ankles while they'll alone and threatening to scream, asking him to pick up panties from under her desk so he'll get an eyeful of her nether parts (he'd been wised up by the pencil trick, though), and writing a sheet that says "I want you to ejaculate inside me" during calligraphy class.

Why thank you.
Just bought Zeta Gundam from RAC, cost me ~USD200. Americans can be so devoid of empathy, you know? @penguintruth: Yah, we know it's tough. But we scrimp and save, so we feel as though the whole world (or at least the Fan community) should know how much effort we put into our hobby. We love reading Manga and watching Anime, so let us have the odd complaint now and then. Fair? |

I'd recommend the Boogiepop series to that guy. Seven Seas did a terrific job on presentation on it and hope to see more
As for the loli book, I really don't see the big deal, since it's not a step in any direction R1 covers: It's what's inside that counts |

Not going to argue with you here, BUT I do have a question. Anyone know what exactly the prize was? I mean, did Zac or Daniel Thompson actually mention it? Sorry, that was two questions. |

I recently checked out fanscans of volume one of Nymphet just to see if it really was as OH GOD WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE THIS IS THE END OF ANIME AS WE KNOW IT as Zac and others (who have not actually read it and are judging it solely on it's title and second hand information) have been making it out to be, and I was sorely disappointed. I was expecting nothing less than hardcore loli porn what with all the controversy surrounding it, and all I got was a cheesy, lighthearted classroom comedy. It teases the audience with a few scattered panty shots (I think there were only three panty shots in the first volume if I remember correctly) and some naughty dialogue, but it if the first volume is any indication of the entire series it looks like it will probably never develop beyond that. To those of you panicking over how the angry soccer moms will respond to the English release of this particular title, I can say with absolute certainty that there is nothing to worry about. If you're worried about the mainstream media picking up on the loli trend, you people should definitely be more worried about Negima. Not only is Negima far and away more sexual than Nymphet, it's also extremely popular in North America. I've seen it take the number one spot on "This week's top books in Hawaii" lists in local newspapers multiple times; a feat which has only ever been previously accomplished by Naruto and Fruits Basket.
Shrink-wrapping this series is completely unnecessary, because not only is it not sexual enough to deserve such treatment, it's clearly only rated 16+ on the website; a fact which many naysayers of this series seem to completely ignore. I present to you Exhibit A: You know what else is rated Older Teen? Some of the most beloved manga series of all time in the states. Stuff like Chobits, Inuyasha, and Rurouni Kenshin. You know what's NOT rated older teen? Hardcore yaoi (BL, 801, Buttsex Books, whatever you want to call it) and other pornographic manga. 18+ yaoi manga poses a much higher threat to the way anime fans are perceived than this silly throwaway fanserivce comic book. Don’t take this as flame bait, but Zac, if you really want all this controversy surrounding loli to die down, you should stop talking about it all together. You’re an extremely influential person in the English-speaking anime industry, and the more you get people riled up about loli, the more attention you draw to the very subject matter you so dearly with would stay underground. Honestly, I had never met a single person on the internet or in real life who declared him or her self an “anti-lolicon activist” of sorts until you’re initial column decrying the stuff from about a year ago. If easily offended, sensitive people just stop caring so much about what “everyone” will think of anime fans as a whole if the mainstream media discovers Niche Fetish #09812, all this controversy will eventually die down, people will forget about it in a few years, and everyone will move on. |
