When it comes to that I think the fansubs like to add the word shit to add to the line. I have never considered the word "kusou" to be translated as shit, I always take it as damn or as Viz translated it in their manga as crap. I think crap would be a better word since kusou isn't a high level swear like shit is and crap isn't that much of a bad word either. So I'm pretty sure it won't say shit on the dvds but thats fine by me plus also they have to be careful since fansubs are not a company so they can do what they want. Funi has to worry about what could happen if there is too much swearing in their subs, but then again I can't imagine an 8 year old actually putting the dvds in Japanese with subs and watching it. |

Since 52 episodes does equal one year's worth of episodes, & a year's worth of episodes is usually what defines a season. This is especially true regarding American television. While true that US shows have seasons with a lot less episodes, the seasons are still defined by how many episodes they show in one year's time. It just so happens in anime they typically show a new episode every week. |

So 13 & 26 aren't set in stone, particularly on an older title like Once Piece or Case Closed until more recent seasons. |
Very true. I'm just noticing the 6 episodes on DVD 11 from Viz as this is highly unorthodox so there must be a reason; not to mention that will bring the episode count to an even 52. |

| When Funi announced the license, 2009 2as the date everyone was throwing around as the date of 4Kids' license expiring. It makes far more sense to wait Viz out since it's safe to assume if Funi's release does well Toei will give them a decent shot at the first 2 seasons. |

"kusou" is usually translated as shit and usually accepted by most as the standard but i usually do it based on situation and personality and sanji is definitely not one to use damn or crap imo. it suxs that companies have to dumb or tone down the language but anime isnt widely accepted and they are trying to sell it to most amount of people rather than a select few.
should i expect differentiations in voice acting or will i just get the same voices for all other projects i have heard them do. i hope they get to use a wider range of their skills because this is more emotional and im really tired of hearing the same voices being used with no real change. |

| I don't know most of those people (if it doen't air on CN I haven't seen the dub for it), but they seem solid enough. I would hope that at the very least Funi could get the rights to the dozens of episodes that Viz cut completely, like the Little Garden arc. |

Most of the cast HAS been on Cartoon Network before. =b Robin's VA is the only one from the list that's never been on a Toonami or Adult Swim anime. The main cast is made up almost entirely of FMA & DBZ vets.

I think an e-mail campaign is in order to pressure Viz to give up the goods so we can get some decent dubs for One Piece. |
I don't think that Funimation is going to 'pony' any cash over. I bet Viz is just going to keep the license, therefore the only place to get season one and two or via Viz. And I certainly don't think that a bunch of emails (that will probably won't be read and will be in the spam folder) is really going to change that. |
Never doubt the power of the consumer. If Viz thinks for a moment that holding on to that license is going to hurt their bottom line, they'll be come around. |

I know I wanted Luci Christian as Nami, But i'm starting to think she been over used for Roles in Funimation's show.. She's a ADV and should generally stay in ADV ..
But some times do a Funi becuase it's ok.. But now she's in School rumble as the main Female role and Now as Nami.. And she'll have the role in Negima!? it's gotta be enough having her in almost every show From ADV but now i have to listen to her in almost all my new Funimation Releases. |

In all honesty...I think they should curse more. I mean there are some situations that just deserve a good *curse*.
I'm sure anyone who might have seen a 2 ton bomb about to blow up a city they were standing in isn't going to say: "oh shoot".
unless they're Flanders. |

Because god knows the Japanese don't use the same actors over & over & over.
Kappei Yamaguchi wasn't also starring as InuYasha at the same time he was playing Ussop, not to mention roles in Peacemaker, Papuwa & everything else he's been doing since he joined the One Piece cast.
Hiraoki Hirata was pretty much a newb before One Piece so almost everything he's been in has been done while in One Piece. Saiyuki, L/R, Fantastic Children.
Same for Kazuya Nakai.
And let's not even get into Pikachu/Chopper VA Ikue Ohtani. At some point she does that Pikachu squeak & you know it's her.
One Piece has even re-used Kazuki Yao at least 3 times. Or are we going to find out Mr 2 used his little power to be Jango & Franky?
"Oh, the Japanese VA's are so much more talented!"
Sorry. Some are very impressive & others reek, same as here. Kazuya Nakai & Hiroaki Hirata are often very easily identifyable because they DO sound the same in a lot of their roles. Ladies man Sanji, Ladies man Gojyo-very similar delivery. |

I tend to translate it different depending on the situation too but I still think crap would suit a character like Sanji too. Viz has him use crap and I think it suits him fine. Its just since kusou is a lower form of a swear word I don't think shit is the best translation, plus One Piece is more of a kids show. I know Japanese shows can get away with more but shit seems like too much.
britannicamoore I agree with you that some situations do call for swearing like the scene with the bomb. Although I think "oh crap" would be just as good as "oh shit". It doesn't bother me though how Funi chooses to translate it, but I'm more interested to see if in the sub funi translates the attacks or keeps them all in japanese.[/b] |

Well, Sonic X Episode 2 had Sonic say "Shit" in english in the japanese version. Not unexpected to hear him speak in english, just that word caught alot off guard. Sonic, in general, likes to randomly say english in his sentences. Also, keep in mind that Sonic X was marketted towards the same audiance as One Piece as well.
As far as swearing goes in Japan, there really isn't an equivalent(sp?) to what we consider swear words in Japan. There are some words that are "bad" in the japanese language, however. |

Kusou (くそ)is more accurately as damn or even darn. Shit is a bit too severe. It's just how the language is. When I was in Japan I noticed it wasn't a very severe word to be thrown around. |

lol somone else thinks like me. I guess it really just depends on the situation since if Sanji is fighting someone and his attack fails then shit or crap would be the right word as opposed to him getting mad at Luffy for eating all the food damn or darn would work best. |
