I agree, but IMO his english voice is a little more grating on the ears than the Japanese. That accent of his...ugh, it's terrible. Other than that I think the dub is okay.
I'd be really dissapointed if they didn't release the second season, since Kodocha is one of my favorites. I'd hate for it to sit on my shelf incomplete... |

Well, its official. During the Q&A at today's Otakon panel, someone asked about it, and it was confirmed that they will not be continuing the second half of the show, primarily due to poor DVD sales . I have to admit, I'm kind of finding it hard to finish buying the DVDs knowing that it will never be finished... |

...Seriously?
If so, I'm going to go cry in a corner. |

Well, I guess we can hope for TRSI/Nozomi to 'rescue' it like they did for SuperGALS. |

| Maybe Right Stuf will come in like they did for Super Gals? That company is like my knight in shining armor for finishing that series. (And they even picked up both seasons of Emma too!) I know it's a long shot, but maybe, just maybe. . . |

| If the top-dog R1 anime company couldn't make it work due to poor sales, I highly doubt another R1 company will go, "Hey! FUNi didn't make any money on that title so lets license what's left and lose some money." Sadly, economics trumps fandom, more so these days as Navarre need FUNimation to be as profitable as possible to support their other loser ventures. Were FUNimation still a solo company, they might have gone further since they had some great profits last year (thus, DBZ would have supported Kodocha, if you will, to make the fans happy). |

| Except that SuperGALS was basically the same situation. It did poorly for ADV, but RightStuf did it with no dub and they seemed to do alright with it. It's not likely, but there is a precedent. |

I believe the basic strategy with Right Stuf is that if they feel they can get enough pre-orders to break even (hence why you get your name on the DVD if you pre-order) it's worth releasing. I don't think they're losing money on those box sets; it isn't much of a risk if it's a single-SKU release and your presales take care of your overhead for you. |

| Yes, that's what I'm hoping for (a boxed-set situation). But I've been an anime and manga fan for a long enough time (over 20 years) to know that one of the hazards of being an "otaku" is unfinished stories and dropped titles. Still, maybe, just maybe. . . |

As much as I love the dub for Kodocha, I'd pre-order box sets of the rest of the series if that's the only way I could see it.
Of course, it should also be remembered that the second half of Super GALS was only 26 episodes. We're talking about 51 eps here, and that could make the dynamics different. |

As a subtitle fan, a title having a dub or not doesn't matter to me. That said, it has been said that 80% of anime fans are dub fans and do not watch anime in Japanese w/ subtitles. That's an old (and I've never been able to verify its source) number so I don't know if that's true today or not. For the sake of discussion, lets say the number is accurate.
OK, so you have a 20% market that likes subtitles and will buy any anime providing there are subtitles w/ a Japanese audio track. How many of them would be fans of a title like Kodocha? Of the 80% market, how many of them would watch a favorite title if it were released subtitle-only? Of those, how many would be Kodocha fans?
AnimEigo often released titles subtitle-only just to release them for fans and save the added costs of dubbing. Look where they are today. Their anime catalog keeps shrinking and they don't have any capital to license anything anime, new OR classic for that matter.
Pioneer has tried this as well. They did score a win with the release of Cardcaptor Sakura as a subtitle-only release, but not so well (from my understanding) in the Magic Girl Pretty Sammy TV series release.
I'm not aware of the SuperGALS situation though. They way Zac describes it loses me a bit. I know what Zac's saying, but something is just not ringing. Before RightStuf could start pre-orders, they'd have to acquire the license. That would mean doing whatever terms the Japanese company wanted in order for them to secure the license, and that would mean some costs up front I would think (even if the costs are spread out over time). RightStuf does have an advantage of not having to pay a middleman fee though in that they are their own store.
If I understand Zac correctly (and please correct me if I'm wrong), RightStuf acquires the anime license. They don't release the subtitle-only set as single DVD's, but in boxed sets (single-SKU). In doing so, you sell a large amount of content at once while reducing the risk that folks won't pick up more DVD's after the first single would have been released. Is that right?
Currently, I don't think FUNimation has done a subtitle-only release of anything. Granted, they would have the added expense of having to place a subtitle-only title in stores and those likely wouldn't sell like the "hybrid" (as RightStuf calls them) DVD's would. FUNimation could have skipped the stores and sold them directly or in combination with a deal with RightStuf, but with the current situation with Navarre, I would say FUNimation's hands were tied. |

I don't care how old this form is it makes me sad....
they would have done the second season depending on sales? That is stupid because I only want to buy it if I can buy the second season at the same time because that is the best part and I can't understand Japanese so I can't buy that one..... Now I just plain won't buy it and be depressaded *sigh* I would have bought a million (checks wallet to find cobwebs) okay a lot so they would release the next series..... sigh no second series means no first for me. see people your sales are going down! |

The only way to convince Funi to release the rest of the show is for everyone who loves the show enough to see the rest come out here to purchase at least ten copies of both boxsets, and do the same when episode 52-102 come out on DVD. |
