And that's a bad thing? Is there even a mindset that would suit all readers? Grown-up and academic would probably be better than the average shounen fanboy's mindset anyway. =P |

Ooooooh I just put this on hold at the library So excited! Whenever it comes in, I'm going to pester the catalogers until they get it all set up in the computer and make it available for checkout. One of the perks of working there I suppose! |

| I got this over the weekend. The reviews are okay as consumer reports go, but I was hoping for something more like the Scarecrow Movie Video Guide or Tom Spurgeon's reviews at http://comicsreporter.com , something more ideosyncratic, where the reviews give you a fuller sense of the individual character of the individual titles. The reviews mostly give the impression that all manga are all pretty much the same, plus or minus a few variable elements (good/bad art, fresh/stale stories, romance, monsters, etc.) Scarecrow or Spurgeon can review a dozen almost identical movies or comics and have a dozen fresh and entertaining reviews; a dozen reviews of typical manga from this guide are all pretty much the same. | ||||

I get the sense that Jason really was aiming this at the library market first and foremost. And as a librarian, the most useful kind of guide you can get is one that lets you compare a few different things to each other along the same set of parameters. For most public libraries, by now, the question really is not about "should we buy manga?" or even "which manga should we buy?", but rather "our budget is x. Why should we buy these five series, and not these other five." Last edited by CorneredAngel on Mon Oct 15, 2007 9:28 pm; edited 1 time in total |

| That makes sense. Still, the sameness of the reviews got me down; I hate to think it's an unintentional indictment of the formulaic cookie-cutter sameness of so much manga, but that's a hard thought to avoid. | ||||
