Then basically you'd want to read volumes 1-3 and stop. Don't read 4+ if you don't want to read any season 2 material. There's the barest start of some material at the end of volume 3 but nothing much.

Er, you might want to re-read volume 3. The first two volumes (chapters 1 - 11) cover everything in the first series. The first chapter of volume 3 is about Henrietta's kaleidoscope and then goes into Pinocchio.

@ daedelus: If you want to read just the first season material, read volume 1 and 2 and then stop.

Well I knew season 2 started in volume 3. I just remembered it being further towards the end of the volume. Confused Guess my memory is fading heh.

I am so looking forward to this. I just finished Gunslinger Girl's last DVD volume yesterday. It was my sister's choice (nice 13 year old girl Razz ) and it was definitely a good series and the dub is really good also.

Last week Moon Phase reported that some of the original cast have already quit voice acting. Then, an update from Saishin Anime Jōhō says the cast of 2nd season will be completely different:

Quote:
<キャスト>
阿久津加菜、塩野アンリ、榎本温子、水野理紗、花澤香菜、三戸耕三、子安武人、松風雅也、矢尾一樹、岸尾だいすけ、平田絵里子、安元洋貴

Not 100% sure who's who yet, but judging from the sequence of the original character list and some other sources floating on the net the new cast list goes as follows:

Girls:
阿久津加菜 Kana Akutsu as Henrietta (debut)
塩野アンリ Anri Shiono = 吉川友佳子 Yukako Yoshikawa as Rico (just changed her stage name earlier this month)
榎本温子 Atsuko Enomoto as Triela
水野理紗 Risa Mizuno as Claes
花澤香菜 Kana Hanazawa as Angelica

Supervisors ("Brothers"):
三戸耕三 Kōzō Mito as Giuseppe (FUNi translated his name as "José" but that's wrong)
子安武人 Takehito Koyasu as Jean
松風雅也 Masaya Matsukaze as Hirscher
矢尾一樹 Kazuki Yao as Marco

Villains:
岸尾だいすけ Daisuke Kishio as Pinocchio
平田絵里子 Eriko Hirata as Franca
安元洋貴 Hiroki Yasumoto as Franco

Hmmm... Bad news for sub fans I guess.

It just further strengthens my hope that Funi does get the rights. I can't imagine anyone but Laura Bailey voicing Henrietta; as well as the rest of the cast and their respective voice actors.

Over a week ago on another forum (you can Google it), I posted the new Japanese staff and cast for Gunslinger Girl 2.

Gunslinger manga creator Yu Aida appears to be taking charge of the writing for the anime, in collaboration with Tatsuhiko Urahata, being responsible for the series composition and the scenario.

The big thing I hope for, beyond the Pinocchio arc is Triela's back story. They all obviously have sad and dramatic pasts but hers really got to me. Anyone who has read the current manga releases knows what I mean. So I hope they cover that part as well. Really makes her and Hillshire's relationship make more sense I think.

Her back story really got to me. So much so that when approached by a charity person in the street about trafficking of women and children the single page from the manga spoiler[(we see Triela on her back, body parts missing and her torturer dead after Hilshire shoots him)] was the only thing I could think of. Needless to say I was easily won over and ended up signing up and donating...which for me is amazing...hell getting me to even speak to a charity is hard enough...

Seriously, a powerful part of the story and one I could not imagine the anime being without.

For those who deny the presence of fanservice...what are you talking about? The manga is absolutely rife with it. Fanservice is giving the fans what they want to see...surely fans of GSG want to see powerful, emotional relationships, well developed, developing and fleshed out characters as well as an all permeating sense of style...GSG delivers on all this on practically every page...fanservice galore.

Seems like this may be another one I'll have to opt out of waiting for a collection version which is rare in my case.

So many Anime, so little time...

That is true but fanservice anymore has come to simply mean tits, ass, and panty/crotch shots. You mention fanservice to a group of anime fans and 9 out of 10 only think of that aspect.

...That was actually me singing GSG's praises in a (apparently) convoluted way...I know full well what fanservice means to most people.

I wonder how many episodes it will be and how far it will go into the manga. I remember when I rented this like 2 years ago and was so upset that it was only 13 episodes because I had fallen in love with the series.

Just ignore me then lol. One question I thought of though and wondered about was how long the series will be. I'm assuming it'll be another 12-13 episode season but it would be nice if it was longer. I don't know though if there's enough material released in Japan to warrant a full 26 episode season though.

Thats what I was thinking. They could go for 26, but it would stop almost exactly where the manga is currently at. From what i've seen of anime, they generally try to avoid that if the manga is ongoing.

I know that the manga in Japan is up to volume 8 or 9 right now and volume 6 is coming out here Wink before the end of this year.

Anyway, the first season is covered in the first 2 volumes and there's alot going on from 3 though 5. I would hope that they make 24 or 26 episodes to really cover everything going up to Pinocchio, including the Triela backstory. I can only imagine how they might show that, the manga was very disturbing about her but made a powerful impact on me. The anime may go all out or hold back regarding what it's about. We'll see...
