That's what I'm waiting to see--if this is the "takeover" everyone is saying it is, or simple outsourcing. We all know the various "store brands" aren't made by the various stores--the stores contract with companies that already make the product & their label is slapped on. Just because ADV is making the dvds & even advertising them doesn't mean Geneon will cease to exist as a brand in the US or even that Geneon will suddenly be ADV's clone & license the same types of titles as ADV tends to license.
When I saw the Dentsu news, I wondered if this wasn't the same issue as Safeway had-Safeway was rumoured in the 1980's to be the nextr target of some well-known corporate raider so they incurred a huge debt buying up their stock to protect themselves-so much they had to sell something & that was their SoCal division. However in the 15-20 yrs since the purchaser defaulted & Safeway has taken over the stores, although they have left them as Vons. I'm wondering of what they paid to buy out Mitsubishi left them with enough debt, they are making up the dif eliminating employees because employee costs(benefits particularly) are a huge part of the cost in running a company. If they drop down to a skeleton crew to liason with ADV or even eliminate absolutely everyone, they can probably also cut back on how much office space they're renting. ADV already deals with Japan on licensing issues so it probably wouldn't be much more for them to liason thru a Japanese base vs thru a small staff in America which could mean the complete elimination of the American Geneon business staff.
Yeah, a week is incredibly short notice, but in all but one on the businessess I've been involved with where this sort of thing happened, everyone knew. The hope was always for the axe to fall on the light side vs heavy side-fewest employees possible getting laid off. Often when a company knows it's going to do something like this, they broadcast it in the hope their staff will go out & find jobs rather than be laid off & maybe collect a severance pay. Even without the severance package, getting laid off usually means no wait for unemployment benefits I believe so it also means they will get a percentage of their pay while they seek other employment. I knew a gal who worked at one of the savings & loans that went under in the 80's & it took something like a year with the people who went out early getting a pretty nice severance package, but she & her friend worked to the end (& were just clerical) & they got nothing--just their final check & unemployment. |
