I was eating a carrot when I read this. And then I let out a little "aah!"

Now I have orange stains.

On my sock.

Oh man, is that ever the truth. First time I saw the CGI Ryuk I laughed my butt off, but surprisingly you get used to it. It seemed throughout the two movies though there was inconsistent CGI quality with him. Some times he would look VERY well done, and other times he'd just look like cheap CGI.

I haven't watched them yet though because the idea of seeing Light played by a real person rather scares me.

I felt all the actors/actresses played their parts pretty well, especially L and Chief Yagami.

I'm not saying anything against the actors, but it still will be a bit weird to think of Light being "real." I had the same reaction when I watched Mars to a real life Masao.

IF they decide to dub the DVD release, I wonder if they will use the same actors that they are using for the anime release.

Any theater release I am fairly positive would be sub only, but the DVD/HD release it is not out of the question. Not that I really care, with live-action I almost always perfer subbed, but I also like a lot of options too.

I haven't seen the anime either, just read the manga. For those of you who have, is there a lot of long quickly spoken speeches?

No, Death Note is not quickly paced. It would just sound odd for Light to talk quickly. Everything he did was slow and deliberate.

As for the movies, a lot of stuff is changed. Light's personality is much different. He sacrifices some of his blistering intelligence for pure maliciousness. And he is not as calm and collected as he is in the anime version. L divulges a lot less information to his task force, and he doesn't have the quirky L-smile that he wore a lot during the anime. Aside from that, Naomi Misora has a much bigger role (and she wears black leather) and some of the events are re-arranged. And the story is much shorter. Still, it's a great thing to show people when you want them to understand the story, but they don't have the patience for the 37-episode anime series or the 12-volume manga series.

Was anyone else just really disappointed with the movie? They seemed to have trimmed and mixed a good deal. They even added a tacked on love interest for Light! It's like the typical Hollywood bull crap you get with US comic adaptations.

Plus I thought the cinematography was bland and made it look more like a TV drama and a theatrical release. Also, the CGI Ryuk was okay in some scenes and stuck out in others.

Forget it. I'll save up money and get the anime instead.

sabri: Nana's music rights might be pricey. Speaking of which, I wonder if Viz was able to keep that Chili Peppers song.

Xenos: Isn't Misa his love interest in the manga?

Well....sort of. Misa loves Light, and is extremely devoted to him, and later in the manga spoiler[they become engaged]. But Light never really seems to actually care for Misa, he just finds her useful for his plans since she has a second Death Note and is so devoted to him. He doesn't seem to actually love her. (Or...well...anyone, although he does seem to be affectionate towards his sister.)

I guess this isn't too surprising, but I'm happy to hear this. I've been wanting to see the Death Note movies ever since I heard about them.

I don't think Viz will dub them. They've licensed some live-action movies before, and I don't think they dubbed those. It doesn't really matter to me if they dub them or not though because I want to watch the Japanese versions. I never really like to see live-action movies dubbed.

Dubbing live action really just doesn't work very well because it's always painfully obvious that the actors are being dubbed over since you can see the shapes of their mouths.

Fast acquisition isn't it? The series isn't even out on DVD here yet.

Hmm, I was hoping that a big US studio would pick this up because I really wanted to see a Hollywood-quality DVD release of these films. I'm actually kind of surprised that Warner Bros. didn't go after it. Oh well. Let's see what Viz Pictures can do with this!

I think it'd be best if they didn't dub it. I'm a big connoisseur of foreign films and I almost never see such films get dubbed. The few ones that do often end up really ugly, and I always go back to the original language track anyway!

Why would they? I can't see this being a big hit, at least not in the numbers that Warner Bros needs. It might sell okay, for what it is, but it's still definitely a niche title.

Well, Warner Bros. did produce the films. Who knew that they wouldn't have brought it over to the US eventually?

Besides, all foreign films are niche titles in the US. Yet Warner Bros. and other major film studios still bring them over. Just to give one of many examples, Warner Bros. brought over the amazing Palestinian-made film Paradise Now early last year (if you've never seen it, you're missing out!)
