Makes me wonder if I should run out and buy a bunch of titles like I planned. Still not sure if I want to do that- or if they'll be new cheaper collections of the shows I want to come.

Hm....my real concern though: does ocean do dubs outside of Geneon? Because there are some actors I like there and I'm hoping they get to continue dubbing.

Looking around the encyclopedia, Ocean has done work for Bandai and Viz as well.

While i don't listen to many dubs myself, while sorting my shelf i've found that i have around 25 shows from geneon(pioneer), 15ish from ADV, 10ish from Bandai and then about 10 or so more from assorted other companies. This isn't counting shows that havn't come out on DVD yet like Nanoha and Zero.

-Gabe, who still thinks this whole thing feels a bit to much like the problems the Big 3 have these days.

Keep in mind though that this says nothing to wether they will actually be released.

Geneon initially planned to keep producing titles until roughly the end of the year, but to pass off distribution of those titles to someone else. Now that their distribution deal has fallen through, it was questionable wether they would even produce those titles. This is just confirming that they will produce at least some of those titles. How and thus if they will be able to distribute those titles remains to be seen. We may very well still need to hope the titles get re licenced by someone else for them to reach the fans. Also, even then they may not end up using this dub. It could remain the property of Geneon even if another company aquires the licence.

This is only speculation, but considering how far in advance dub work is done, Bang Zoom may very well have finished dubbing Higurashi. If that is the case, then there's a sizeable chunk done which gives me hope that it will be finished and in my hands someday.

Sooner or later? Time will tell. I'm......patient.

I've been out of the loop for a while, and while I heard about Geneon negotiating a deal with ADV, I didn't realize it was because they were in the situation they are. This really sucks, as Geneon has always been my favorite licensee/distributor of anime in terms of both quality of releases and quantity of properties I've liked or have been interested in. Out of the 80+ anime series & films I have in my collection (including those properties split amongst two or more companies, as well as series I haven't finished), about 30 are from Geneon. Only about 20 are from ADV, 14 from Bandai, 7 from Funimation, about 18 others from various other smaller companies (Viz, Media Blasters, Manga).

It's been a while since I've been able to buy any anime (no job=no spending money for anime), so I've fallen behind on many series, mostly those distributed by Geneon (Gankutsuo, Fafner, Stellvia, Kyo Kara Maoh, Starship Operators, Gungrave, & GadGuard). Not only that, but there's some older Geneon series that I haven't gotten around to buying on DVD yet (El Hazard, Fushigi Yuugi, Lain), but there's also several recent licenses that I haven't even had the chance to start watching yet (Shana, Ergo Proxy, Kamichu, Black Lagoon, Hellsing Ultimate). I should be getting a job soon, so that means I can catch up on those series. While I was going to save up to get an Xbox 360, the sheer number of series that may be no longer available in the near future means that I'm going to focus on just buying Geneon DVDs. I've estimated that it'll take me about three months to get them all, which I hope will be enough time.

I really hope the best for Geneon. They've been my favorite even since I started collecting anime DVDs, and I hope they can continue being as such in the future, whether it's by securing a distribution deal with another company (why did the ADV deal fall through, anyway?) or whatever else it takes.

I'm still holding my breath and checking in here daily for word on When They Cry. I almost exclusivly buy my anime in box sets. For me it is a matter of Stretching limited Anime dollars, shelf space(man do I love thinpacks) and value for my dollar. In the case of When They Cry however, I bit the financial and storage bullet and started collecting the series one release at a time. Man I hope I don't get burned. It will suck hard if When They Cry is never completed ( they have art work and everything for the last two discs I mean come on!) I won't even watch the last eppie on disc 3 cause it starts a new story arc. Not to mention the money I have invested in When They Cry so far could have purchased 1 or 2 WHOLE complete season box sets of some other animes I've had on my radar. I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed they finish it at some point.

When They Cry is/was not selling well at all. Amazon's ranking currently has them at:

Volume 1 #52,094
Volume 2 #43,736
Volume 3 #16,072

Comparing this to the latest Kyo Kara Maoh at #9,466 or Karin 3 at #9,962 or even Saiunkoku 2 at #13,970, which are all also works in progress, has me puzzled considering how much higher this series is ranked here and the number of threads exist on When They Cry.

I still can't help but think that a good number of people who watched the fan subs did not buy the DVDs since it is ranked #185 on the have seen listing compared to Karin at #322 and Saiunkoku at #545. Why else is a series that has been seen by so many more people on ANN (x2.5 many people compared to Saiun) selling fewer copies than the other Geneon titles?

I usually don't care if people buy bootlegs, copy DVDs, or download subs and have friends who have done so in the past for various reasons. I just find the whole fansubs help sell a title argument, and having a fansub will not turn people off of from double dipping for the DVD rather absurd. It does seem a bit frustrating that this series most likely will not be completed here since the R2s are so expensive and I'm rather hooked to the series from the first three volumes.

I really wish that sales figures at major retailers reflected the tastes here. There are so many shows listed here that have been seen by so many, and are ranked really high but just are not selling. Even Disgea is outselling When They Cry!

Well, I'd like to thank Geneon for all the great titles they've released while I've been an anime fan. (raises glass of cream soda) Geneon, here's to you.

On a related note, I still want to see the rest of Hellsing Ultimate released.

Well this doesn't surprise me. Its basically saying "We are sorry that you are unhappy about Geneon USA closing down US distribution and we will do what we can about unfinished series" with a hidden caveat, at least from what I felt from it "But we won't promise you anything". I was speaking with a store manager of a Suncoast Video yesterday about Geneon and he gave me this company line: "Geneon has stopped US distribution, they will not be restocking shelves with Geneon product even if it is in warehouse storage for distribution. Geneon product that has not been completed and is not relicensed by another US distribution company will end without being completed." One of the series they named was Helsing. I thought this was strange especially after reading this letter from Geneon. On another point, the parent company of Suncoast is the same for FYE and is the largest retail distributor of Anime in the US.

Lets take an example of something else that is subbed and on TV. Bleach, or Naruto. Those sell much more than any of the others. It seems to me you are selectively using very limited statistics (and I can understand why, we don't have enough data) to make a point, and I think there are so many counter-examples to the point you are making on sales as to make it completely unclear. I don't think it's clear at all that fansubs are the issue. Lots of series that have a lot of fansub viewers are pretty popular as sales and lots of series that had fansub viewers aren't. Using ANN's #'s on viewership is probably also pretty flawed since most people who watch anime probably don't come here (even if they are aware of the place). I, myself, was aware of ANN for about 2 years before deciding to rate anything or add things to my viewed list. Many others out there have never even heard of this place.

So anyway, I think you are making too much of limited information. I can't prove that your opinions are wrong of course, either.

I think what you are wanting is for sales to reflect your own tastes (which happen to match that of many other people here). And I think we can ALL agree that we'd prefer more people to be buying what we like as it makes it much more likely for us to be able to get it.

To put my money on the issue where my mouth is, I did buy the first DVD of Shana since Geneon looks to be going out. I really liked it so I purchased the rest of the series (26$ a dvd a bit high but oh well) yesterday.

I know this doesn't mean anything, but it is kind of interesting to note that volumes 4 and 5 for both Karin and Higurashi are listed on Amazon for preorder....
