I never heard of this book before, but I guess that's because it's not even out yet. Right Stuf has is listed for August 31, but Amazon has it for October 9. I'm inclined to believe it's not coming out until October 9, however, because that is a Tuesday.
And...It's only been five years since manga really started over here? That's it? Amazing...I had no idea the market was so young still. Then again, I have only seriously been reading manga since Shonen Jump started in the US. Hmmm...This author, Jason Thompson, also works at Shonen Jump... I hope he wasn't the one who decided to serialize Bleach.

No, manga has been coming out much longer than that, but that's about how long its been since Tokyopop started the 'authentic' unflipped format at more affordable prices. They used to always be flipped, where bigger, and cost a good deal more ($15 was normal). It thought it had been longer than 5 years, though. Edit: Nope. Manga has been out far longer than 5 years it just wasn't that big before Tokyopop started unflipping them and halfed the price. Back in the day titles like Gunsmith Cats and Oh My Goddess sold for around $30 CDN which is unreal to spend on a 180 page book. Many mangakas refused to have their series brought over because they believe flipping the pages brought out errors made in the drawings making it harder to get good series.

Ewww, a review anthology that tries to pass as an encyclopedia? I hate it when they do that.
I'll probably buy a copy just because I like being broke. It should be fun to read, but really, wasn't Anime Encyclopedia enough? Someone needs to come out with a real anime/manga reference book, none of this ratings and reviews crap that makes a potentially legitimate source look like Beckett Anime Collector. |

I second every single word of this review. What a great job Jason Thompson did on this book....he basically wrote the book this Jason has been wanting to write since he got obsessed with manga over a decade ago.
I was also stunned by how complete this thing was. It even had Silbuster in it. SILBUSTER! I'm the only person I know who's even heard of that series.
Not in the US, though. Salaryman manga are practically non-existant in English, so in that sense it is an "oddball" genre.
Well, Jason Thompson got his start at Viz (editing the shortlived Game On! USA) but this anthology is published by Del Rey, and the Viz titles are graded just as fairly as any other company's.
Nope, you've got it right. NGE was the first series released in both a "flopped" and "unflopped" version, while Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z (released simultaneously) were the first to be published exclusively "unflopped." Blade of the Immortal, which I think started in 1996, was also a big move in this direction....rather than simply mirror-imaging the artwork, Dark Horse (at the request of Hiroaki Samura) painstakingly cut out all the panels and re-arranged them so that each panel remained unchanged even though they now read in reverse order. BotI was also the first series to have its sound effects left in Japanese, that I can recall. |

Looking at this as a librarian (I'm an MLS student), I'd have liked the actual write-ups to be more content/presentation summary and less editorializing. But professional librarians, especially in public and school libraries, have been *dying* for some kind of collection development guide, and this fits the bill perfectly. So even if not too many average fans put in orders, I think Del Rey and Jason already have a captive audience.

Actually, it's pretty much your standard idea for a Library Collection Development tool- breif reviews, and INFO ON EVERYTHING YOU CAN CRAM IN. [hey look another library type person just pointed that out  ]
Jason reviews *every* japanese a ever released in english. And I mean every. BTW--- Some of the minireviews were done by Shaenon Garrity of Overlooked Manga Festival fame, and the duo also edit Otaku USA's manga section currently. Yeah, five years ago was about when I started reading manga and I've seen the market take leaps and bounds, from being just a few volumes (maybe) at my local chapters to being multiple shelves in multiple sections. |

When I said "really started", I was talking about when manga really started over here. Sure, there were releases, but nothing like today until about five years ago. I was just surprised that it still has only been five years.
Really, it just makes me realize how "grassroots" anime and manga fandom still is on this continent. 
Anyway, about this book, I'm getting really excited about it. Until it's released on October 9, though, is there anything else like it already released? |

With reviews of manga like that, this has The Anime Encylopedia written all over it - useful stats, but tread lightly on the commentary. Let's hope it has less errors.

Yeah, I guess there were a few other series that were released unflipped before. I was referring specifically to the unflipped boom that Tokyopop initiated. They had about 6 titles that they started with and Love Hina was one of them. |

Mind you, while TP might of started their unflipped iniative 5 years ago, they've been around for 10 years [MixxZine launched in 1997], and translated manga has been around since the mid 80's with VIZ's initial releases like Mai the Psychic Girl [in terms of regular releases- odds and ends were translated even before that].
