Wow... a question that doesn't apply to me... oh well...
By the way, great job on the column again, Zac. Must admit, I'm also liking the theme columns. |

Jim Beam, eh? Not a bourbon man; give me a good beer or a Jagermeister on the rocks, mmmm.
Now, worst thing I've seen someone do at a club or con...I'll have to think about that one. |

Anyway, as the person running the anime segment of my college's Geek Society this year (there is no anime club per se), the worst that has happened so far is that one particular person, who is an "animation major" (I don't know what he means by that, since my school doesn't offer such a thing) comes in, spends the entire time yelling out his predictions for what will happen later on in the show (many of which happen to be right), criticizes the animation ("Japanese CGI is never good!") and is loud and boisterous enough that I want to tell him not to come back. He backs this up with a serious lack of knowledge about anime.
I realize this is probably a common occurrence in most anime clubs...but what the hell, I've only been at this for two months, and I felt like sharing. |

Now the figures from the voice actor seem kinda high, as in a good amount to be paid. Now unless you do constant work like some VA's do that of course won't be much in the long run. My question is is that amount per hour before or after taxes? Also, would the taxes apply per the state the VA resides in or where the dub took place. I ask because obviously some do work for other studios (Like Monica Rial or Chris Ayres for Funi and ADV, and the studios are in separate states.

umm Psycho Funimation and ADV are both in the same state Texas, Funi's in Dallas and ADV is in Houston

Anime Career: Since I’m having trouble with college right now (not sure if I should be taking law or not) I thought of the things I like doing and how I should make a living out of that. One of my major hobbies right now is watching anime, so I thought that maybe I should pick a career that will allow me to enjoy anime, but then I thought I wouldn’t make enough money to cover living expenses. After reading this week’s column, I think I should reconsider that, since Answerman’s reply gave me ideas.
Blogs: I rarely read blogs and when I do, it’s just so I can read plot summaries. For everything else I rely on ANN – I believe everything published on the site is credible info.
Podcasts: Not interested.
Flake: Give this person a column! Lol
Answerfans: For me, the best thing is simply entertainment. Worse thing is money – unless you have a lot of it. |

Yes, although you will see folks appear in dubs done in different states, such as Jennifer Sekiguchi in the Ah my Goddess 2 dub done by NYAV Post in New York, or even Vic Mignona (sorry for bringing him up Zac! ) who is in Bleach - a dub done in California, while Vic works primarily in Texas. As far as the money, it sounds right to me as this is paid as independent contractors, meaning no tax withholding, benefits, etc. that an employee gets. What would be interesting to know is the average amount of hours a VA works on a typical show.
As for podcasts, I couldn't agree more. The one thing I really don't care for is the vulgarity heard in some podcasts. I wish they would try to be a little more professional. And using a conversation at a social event without informing the person it will or might be used in a future podcast is in my opinion unethical and classless. As for frequency of podcasts, I had a feeling something was up with Geneon when the frequency of their podcasts kept getting less and less frequent at the end.
ANN paid off for positive reviews? Come on! I don't know of any site that is more critical of shows, which is not a bad thing. I feel sometimes they can be a bit harsh, but remember it is the reviewers opinion - as they say, one mans treasure is another mans garbage. It is like TV - if you don't like what is on, change the channel. Personally, I feel ANN is one of the fairest and most professional anime sites out there. It is one of my favorites, and a part of my daily internet experience. |

Was just wondering Zac, did you decide to do this specific topic because ANN is currently looking for another reviewer, or is it just an ironic coincidence?

| Not all podcasts are talk. I do one that's just music and poetry (Podcast Ping). But in this case I take it he's just talking about anime podcasts. There's only a couple I can think of that use their podcast status to get into cons for free, and in those cases they have a significant amount of listeners (hundreds at least, if not a thousand or more). It's to the cons advantage to give them free press access because the podcasts provide free advertising directly to the anime market. If the cons get enough additional paying visitors it's profitable to the con. |

Well, at least my podcast doesn't violate one of the 4 deadly sins. I have four segments and keep on track on all 4. Sometimes I'll go on a tangent, but it's pretty much always anime related.
I can't shout over someone else's opinion about voltron because, well, I'm a solo podcaster (which doesn't seem to be the most popular type). The same pretty much applies to the in-jokes. And I have now have 46 episodes, and I haven't missed a week posting (yet), so I guess I score well on the frequent update part too.
Of course, that doesn't mean anyone listens to it anyway lol (well, in September, according to my web stats, I had 474 mp3 downloads from my site. Not too bad I guess, though I'm not sure how many actual unique listeners that translates into)
(edit: I just calculated that my last 7 episodes - the 5 in September and 2 so far in October - are averaging just over 90 downloads each. Of course, I'm assuming that means if someone starts listening using the flash player on the site then stops, that still counts. Still not sure how many unique visitors that is lol. I've been trying to redirect my podcast rss to feedburner, though the last time I tried I put feedburner in an infinite loop lol) |

Joanna Slawik second paragraph describes my occasional situations with people like that. I gotten that slack at summer camp before but the twist is that person was a former anime fan themselves. So that was WTF to hear stuff like that from them.
Great column as usual Zac! I was also wondering about writing about anime for a living. When I read the second question I flipped off the screen while doing so. I see anime blogs sometimes take their news from the big sources like here. *shrugs*
The third thing you listed about things you hate in podcasts can be amended. If the story is friggin' hilarious to the listener then it's okay. Only a few can get away with it though. Your taste in podcasts is great. The rest are basically the official don't efff up you're podcast rules. Add in trying to achieve good audio quality. You can be none of those things and be great but if your audio sucks and no one wants to listen then epic fail.
| Quote: | During this party I found myself in a friendly debate with a couple of folks who ran their own podcast and were familiar with my column. I always enjoy a debate - even when a little sloshed, after a full day of work - so we had a spirited conversation. I thought they were both charming and intelligent individuals, even though one of them seemed to have a bit of a chip on his shoulder.
Turns out they waited like 2 months and decided to dedicate an episode of their podcast to that argument, making a bunch of (mostly fair, aside from casting untrue aspersions on my salary) personal comments about me, reframing and often misquoting my argument and then continuing the conversation without me there. | A couple of folks....podcasters at Otakon. *Viga plays the guessing game* I wont bomb 'em out here though.
