Interesting interview, some good questions and answers.

Nice to see Bang Zoom is doing Lucky Star, maybe my dream of the live action EDs being refilmed for the dub with Bosch will come true. (I doubt it, but I can hope)

I like the way you think. Bosch has already been in a few hilarious videos because of his involvement with Bang Zoom.

I also like hearing that the dubs licensed by Geneon are still being done; once the DVDs can be distributed we won't have to worry about any change or issues in quality.

Speaking on fansubs, I actually do think it's true that they do help promote the show, to an extent, that it can be a healthy thing, but I think it's gone way beyond that now. Anime downloads are more prevalent than porn on the internet right now. It is a serious problem, and it hurts everyone.
Anime is bigger than porn, everyone. This is a SERIOUS problem!!

SERIOUSLY, who cares you're losing control over your product. If fansubs equal increased sales, you should embrace them rather than recite over and over and over again how bad they are, but at the same time throw in a few good words so the majority of fans don't start hating on your company.

Using a phrase from a character threatening to commit spouse-abuse as a name for a company. That's funny!

The original shows they have planned sound interesting. Looking behind the scenes in the industry and such.
I also liked how Mr. Sherman took the bulls by the horn when the question came up about the topics mostly concerning what Bang Zoom! worked on being covered on the show. He's well aware of the "notation" of that issue and he was honest about it. I respect that.

And how can you pan on PlanetES? Crying or Very sad

Oh, boy...

Well, he does if he thinks sales are not as strong as they should. His example with if 1/3 of Haruhi DVDs were to be sold should make that clear.
At least he recognized it's an issue the industry has to deal with, too.

Agreed.

I've been in denial that I may not get the rest of my Saiunkoku DVDs or Guardian of the Sacred Spirit. Very good to hear at least one of those projects is still alive.

He never said fansubs equal increased sales. He said, "they help promote the show." But they DO NOT increase sales. They DECREASE them. If you pay attention, they acknowledge that fansubs threaten the anime industry itself in the U.S. Would you like anime to die in the U.S.? I sure wouldn't. Not when Geneon's license helped support the production of Serei No Moribito in Japan.

I swear, some fansub cheerleaders around here have selective hearing/reading.

He said that the fanbase was increasing, yet sales were decreasing. Yes, fansubs promote a show, but popularity alone doesn't make a company money. It strokes egos for the creators and producers, but doesn't put food on the table. Sales do.

Seirei no Moribito Anime cry

Finally, a ray of light emerges from the dark Geneon silence. I'm so happy!

And crilix, that's the best example of cognitive dissonance I've seen in quite a while. It's like you just made up the words that you wanted him to have said, even though his actual words were right there for anyone to see! Bravo!

I'm glad Zac asked the hard questions about AnimeTV. I can barely sit through an entire episode without rolling my eyes on how many BangZoom! productions are hyped and how forced everything else seems in order to promote them. It's basically a huge commercial for BangZoom products and there's little thought in any of the "reviews" given by the panel of people who seem like they're just actors playing the roles of anime fans.

The fansub remark is just a small portion of the interview so let's try not to focus this thread on that entirely especially considering we've already recently had to lock a talkback thread as the debate was going nowhere and getting out of hand.

Since it was discussed in the interview obviously it can't be avoided, but if you must talk about it keep it related to what was discussed in the interview regarding fansubs and keep the whole ethics and freedoms arguments that only end up going nowhere to a minimum.

I just wanted to say after three years of reading this site, this is the best interview that I've ever read. Those were great questions, and I'm glad to see you didn't let him off the hook on the conflict of interest question. (Although the reviewers did completely pan Trinity Blood.)

Really, I'm very impressed.

I think you're kind of missing the point..... when bootlegging starts negating the sales of anime to a degree that less anime gets imported, less gets dub and ultimately less gets made, it's bad for us all. There's a good reason people recite over and over how bad they are..... stop and think about it sometime.

Anyhoo, Bang Zoom are quite awesome, and I love the logo they use on some of their releases like Haru+Guu. I hope work picks up for them, as I've enjoyed a lot of their dubs......I know that they're working on some new dubs for Media Blasters according to Sirabella's AnimeonDVD posts. I didn't know they did the Haruhi dub.... I'm guessing the companies they deal with now would be Bandai and MB [have they done Manga Ent. dubs? The number of companies without inhouse dubbing has really decreased]

They have done a few dubs for Manga, Tokko and Karas.
