Bob: If it makes you feel better, Paprika was more successful at the U.S. box office than any Kon movie before it.

I really don't think Simpsons stands a chance at a nomination. It's a trifle, based on a TV series.

Beowulf is a prestige project and if Academy members see it in 3D they will likely be blown away by the spectacle of it; that makes it a shoo-in for a nomination. Plus it came out at the end of the year which is always a plus.

Why is Chipmunks even being considered, it's live action much like the way that Garfield movie that came out a few years ago!
The controversy surrounding Beowulf is due to the fact that it's motion captured. The Polar Express and Monster House were criticized for similar reasons. Where as I can understand where they're coming from, I don't think "motion capture" automatically means all the work was done for the animators, much of it's still done from scratch, including facial expressions (one of the most difficult things to get right in CG)
I'm really disappointed Paprika didn't make the list (is this list finalized, or do they still have time for changes?)
I'm rooting for Ratatouille although I've heard great things about Persepolis, (can't wait to see it) so either one is deserving for recognition in my book. Although Persepolis may be nominated for best foreign film, in addition to this category. At least Tekkonkinkreet is submitted and I hope it makes the list (I admit I haven't had a chance to see it yet)

It's not. I meant to ask Gatsu why he even said that.

I have yet to watch my Tekkon DVD but think this movie is truly worthy of being a nominee. If the Academy doesn't give this the winning nod, that would be stupid. Howl's was a far better movie to have been nominated than Wallace and Gromit.

The Variety article says it is being considered.

Lucca: Sony already submitted Paprika last year, so it's ineligible this year.

It's mentioned in this article as well as a similar one seen at animated-news.com. Speaking of which it mentions:
"Three films (Alvin and the Chipmunks, Beowulf, and Persepolis) have not yet had their required Los Angeles qualifying run. All the submitted films must be found to fulfill the rules and requirements for an animated feature before they will be allowed to move on in the voting process." - www.animated-news.com
So this list may still go through some changes yet ( but I'm not sure if anything can be added at this point).

...Ah, now I remember, thanks. Given it's success, Paprika would had a better chance to be recognized than last year. It's a shame, but it can't be helped.

Hahahahahahah

"I haven't seen this movie but I'm sure it's worthy of 'best animated film'!"

You know, somehow I missed the Alvin and the Chipmunks thing in the Variety article so I retract my statement. It's all the more baffling that that movie is being considered since it's live-action.

I guess there's some kind of threshold for how much of the film is animated and how much is live-action and the Chipmunks has enough CG in it to be considered animated. Odd.

Honestly I thought Tekkonkinkreet was a mess. It had some elements that weren't bad but the whole thing just fell apart in the later half and I honestly don't think the academy is going to give the nod to it. I know people are going to scream bias and start the anti-domestic film industry tirades we see every single year at Oscar time but honestly of all the possible nominees we've seen in anime this is probably the weakest.

I think we're all missing the real comedy here. Just picture the old farts of the Academy trying to sit and watch the entirety of the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie. I think it's hilarious that the people at [adult swim] submitted it at all.

I agree. It really came unglued as the movie moved along, and wasn't the type of story the could afford a narrative break-down; unlike a movie such as 'Paprika' which had a strong enough visual story telling style to power it over a under-written story.

Definitely a notch below more (relatively) recent notable releases.

Zac: Seeing the dvd isn't the same as seeing the movie. And yeah, it is kind of hypocritical of them that Alvin gets nominated, but that effing troll movie and Stuart Little 2 get a pass. But Murdoch thinks he can buy anything, so...

As for TK's chances, well, no one liked Crash, but that got nominated, so you never know... But even if it's not great, Studio 4c's
still built up enough good will in the industry to deserve the win. It's like how I still wanted Tokyo Godfathers to win, even though I really didn't like it, but I still admired Kon.

I think Ratatouille is the guaranteed winner (I loved that movie!) however here are the Rotten tomatos ratings just too see an approx. Although anything can happen.

@ Tekkonkinkreet 71 % (<20 reviews)

# Alvin and the Chipmunks N/A

* Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters 47%

* Bee Movie 52%

# Beowulf N/A

@ Meet the Robinsons 65%

@ Persepolis 100% (<20 reviews)

@ Ratatouille 97%

*Shrek the Third 42%

@ The Simpsons Movie 88%

@ Surf's Up 77%

* TMNT 31%

TV show based and francaise movies probably will be left out.. It's hard to judge from the current reviews since some were not as heavily reviewed.

I do not dispute what you are saying. But in 2004, Robert Zemeckis' Polar Express got left out while Shrek 2 and Shark's Tale were elected. As mind blowing as this film may be, if it gets panned by critics or does not get a big box office take, it probably will be left out. It already is a hard sell as a fantasy action epic based on an ancient English poem. As much as they like to award prestige and innovation, the academy is also prone to vote for things like buzz or money. Hence, why I have Shrek 3 and the Simpsons. Shrek on the account of its big names and previous nominations. Simpsons mostly because it is made by Matt Groening and this may be an award on a body of work rather than one piece. I do look forward to Beowulf, but for the above reasons, can not see it taking either place or dispelling the serious foreign film Persepolis.

And yea, the Chipmunks look ridiculous.

I don't know and don't care much for this -- it always feel to me that the whole thing is almost like a farce, more of a popularity contest than judging the films by their own merits -- but I really wanted to watch Persepolis.

The comic was wonderful. Moreover, anything that garners complaints from tyrannical regimes gets an extra bonus point from my book.

From what I hear though, Tekkonkinkreet sounds like a mess of a film, and I'm not the kind of person who'd support an inferior product just because it's "anime."

then again this criticism comes from someone who didn't even watch the film yet...
