Paprika was submitted last year. Therefore, it's ineligible this year.

Justice is served. Alvin and the Chipmunks is no longer considered an animated film. Cool

So I finally saw Beowulf, and while I was generally satisfied with it, I didn't feel it was exceptional. There's a lot of stilted movement; I'm not fond of Forrest Grendel; and the revisionist approach to the story[Think of that episode on The Simpsons where Lisa learns the "truth" behind Jebediah Springfield .] severely hinders the action-adventure element of the epic. Beowulf's not really a tale built around characterization in the first place, so focusing on the relationships hurts the pacing. The CG backgrounds are admittedly decent, but the action in the foreground is relegated to running and jumping, rather than interacting, which basically makes the film an overpriced Harryhausen tribute. Plus I thought the main character was kind of daft to be spoiler[cutting off his own arm to reach the dragon's heart], when he could've easily spoiler[thrown the sword in the chamber and been done with it]. So IMHO, Beowulf's not bad, but not Oscar-worthy.

So it didn't win, but at least AMPAS didn't automatically vote for CG kiddy-fodder this year. Too bad Persepolis is likely to be used as propaganda to nuke Iran, though...

Hmm... for the first time ever, I've only seen one of the BAF nominees, Ratatouille, though I don't think Persepolis has hit screens in Ottawa yet (okay, probably just A screen, and, when it does get here, that screen will probably be way out in freakin' Kanata).

Then again, excluding Paprika, I'd only seen three animated films all year.

I'm just glad The Simpsons Movie wasn't nominated; it wasn't a return to form, just a return to 10th season mediocrity that only seems like a return to form compared to the abysmal state of the show now.

As for the Best Picture nominees, I've seen 2 (Juno and No Country for Old Men), which is my usual BP-nominees-I've-seen average. I'm pulling for NCFOM, even if The Darjeeling Limited was easily the best film I'd seen all year. The other nominees don't seem like the sorts of films that interest me, so I doubt I'll see them.

Anyway, here's hoping Bandai and Kadokawa get
"The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" a nomination.

For next year?

I don't think it would be eligible; it was released in Japan in July 2006, so it would have had to have some kind of minimal theatrical release in the United States by the end of 2007 to win any kind of Oscar.

I think it only applies if they released it on home video or broadcast it in Japan.

No, I'm about 99.9% sure that films first released theatrically in a foreign country only get a one calender year extension for their American release to be eligible, meaning The Girl Who Lept Through Time ceased being eligible at the end of 2007.

Same with Tales from Earthsea.

Not that either would have had any serious chance of being nominated, since neither was from Hayao Miyazaki.
