I'm still waiting for Angel's Egg, myself.

Zalis: I'm still getting the "Kawajiri Collection" exclusively for Shinjuku, 'cus it's OOP on individual disc.

I like to imagine Sho "Kill Whitey" Aikawa as a grizzled paranoiac hiding in the Hokkaido forests and hoarding illegal firearms just in case some psychic blond amazon agents from the Israeli-American Wall Street mafia arrive and try to buy Japanese soil with their Jew Gold.

Of course, I'm sure he seems normal in real life. Hell, Angel Cop's gibbering anti-Semitism might not even be his doing, since Ichiro Itano co-wrote the whole thing and, as the director, had to approve of all the conspiracy-theory nonsense.

I've gotta admit that Angel Cop's one of my favorite hilariously awful anime, perhaps because it's never boring; someone's always blowing up or shooting or swearing or burning or screaming or foaming about the World Jewish Conspiracy. I usually don't pay much for anime that I'll only like ironically, but I'd buy an Angel Cop reissue at full retail, especially if it fixed the subtitles to let the glorious insanity shine through.

The Angel Cop manga is odd. It's based on Aikawa and Itano's story, but it's drawn by romance manga artist Taku Kitazaki, whose cutesy '80s style really clashes with the rampant violence. It's only one volume long and differs from the anime in a number of ways (the psychics are all blond, willowy types; Angel has a backstory; and she's the one who gets the cyborg treatment and ends up looking like Battle Angel's Alita). I'm not sure if the anti-Semitic angle is intact or not, since I've only seen the manga in Japanese.

"If this is justice then I'm a banana" is actually a quotation from a libel case in the UK in the late 80's involving a satiracal magazine being sued by the wife of a serial killer.

Nearly as weird as "Angel Cop" -but not quite.

I didn't think it was possible for Angel Cop to get any more delightfully bad in my mind, but there it goes.

Nope. Check Raiden investigating the American Embassy scene when he gets chewed out by the beat cop. I know that phone. My mother had one when I was a kid. Weighed about 7 pounds. Don't know how he stashed that in his coat... Maybe his abs have a glove compartment. It would make as much sense as anything else in this show.

spoiler[The attack on the embassy came first thru the use of a modified Porsche stolen from (Narita?) airport, and Suyama was captured while doing a bank robbery in Australia with Tachibana. The plane ride was an extradition motion.]

Right on this one. Though I guess it doesn't matter, seeing as how that whole plot thread is brought to a premature conclusion.

spoiler[I don't recall Angel "happily" going after the Terrorists. I think Raiden tells her to go after them, despite his horrific injuries.]

I was exaggerating slightly. Raiden had just been shot twice AND gotten hit by a car on his motorcycle. He's really really badly injured. Then the exchange goes like this:

Raiden (in serious pain): Angel, never mind me, just get them.

Angel: No problem. (runs off)

As that is not the reaction of any sort of caring human being at all, I was using it to illustrate my point that Angel is a really terrible human being.

That's amazing about the banana line.

This brings to mind a part of Angel Cop that's always amused me. Angel's a callous, unlikable person for most of the series, right? Well, in the last episode, after Raiden's been cyborged out and smacked around by Lucifer, Angel brings him a new battery or something. Then, out of nowhere, she starts kissing him and prattling about how he and the rest of the Special Security Government Gestapo have given her a purpose in life and made her want to protect Japan (from the filthy Americans, naturally). I guess that makes her tsundere.

One of the members of my anime club actually has the Angel Cop DVD collection and the funny thing is, he's always reluctant to show it because of how bad it is. Razz

That said, this is another great article to enjoy over a cup of coffee...or green tea. Razz

One other thing I wanted to point out, Justin, is that the name "Freya" may be a misspelling. I believe it really is "Flare" to emphasize the word play to the girl who can control the power of fire.

Yeah, Angel Cop is pretty bad but do you at least get a shower scene with Angel? Very Happy

P.S. Maybe in the future, you can do an article on the 90's Appleseed OVA. Wink

Ah... I actually had the DVD when it came out... it was actually back in the "Almost nothing was available" era. If I had known how much people would have paid for it today, I would have kept it

Horrible horrible story... the guy who said this would have been an excellent MST movie was right.

I'll always remember when they shot that woman in the face as the most appalling moment.

I saw it subbed so I could hear the references to Jews and Americans, which Manga rendered as "b**tards" and f***ers" in the subs.

If I had known how laugh out loud bad it was in the dub, I might have watched that too.

Amazing the garbage we watched back then, isn't it?

Nah. Just hot for cyborgs. Very Happy

Angel Cop is one of my all time favorite crapfests. Aikawa gets to flaunt his Jew hatred and lay the ground work for Ghost in the Shell, Itano gets to call the US an evil empire and torture people 'till they're covered in maggots, ESPer Bon Jovi joins Darth Robocop in a battle against Steroids Abusing Madonna... I'd say "they don't make 'em like this anymore", but frankly they never really did. If there'd been a little frontal nudity this could well be the anime equivalent to Caligula, but I guess that honor has to go to Evil Town by default. Smile

The R2 release lacks PAL-NTSC ghosting and isn't as... green as the Manga disc, but they're still from ancient composite masters and look pretty bad. There's really weird 3:2 cadence stuff going on too, making me think episode 3+ was edited on NTSC video rather than actual film, but it's hard to be sure. The R2 box set has PCM audio while the singles have Dolby, and the singles at least had a still gallery on each disc with production and promo art. Not sure if the box has anything else.

Oh yeah - the firey girl's name is "Freya" (or Freja if you prefer), as in the Norse goddess. Lucifer and Asura are religious references too.

Okay, somethings not clicking here. Your saying the phone is some 7lb Brick, and that image is getting me is this:

Now I remember that the phone he uses had to fold up AND had a retractable antenna. There is no way the thing was 7 lbs. 2 lbs yes, but 7? Give me a ****ing break.

I was thinking more along the lines of this (the bottom Phone):

Angel Cop was on of my first anime pruchase way back when in the VHS days. I enjoyed it for the most part but as I matured and anime became more diverse It disappered in my basement never to be thought of again. and then I saw the DVD in a bargain bin and grabbed for some nostalgia and promptly forgot how Cheesy it was with it trying to go for hardcore rocking Violence that you couldn't get from American animation at the time. (that first multiple headshot with woman still brings back memories.) but Angel Cop still has place in my heart for bringing me into the anime hobby back when it was called (by some)Japanimation.

Yep. That's the one Raiden uses. You still haven't actually checked the anime, have you?

So I ran 'Angel Cop DVD' through Google Products search, just to see if someplace out there still had it cheap (because I'd love me some old cheesy uber-violent anime Very Happy )

Sure enough, I get a result for $4.94, and click through quickly... that's when I discover the seller is 'Excalibur Flims'- an adult online video shop. My embarrassment about ordering from such a site overran my desire for the show. Crying or Very sad

If anyone out there less cowardly than I decides to try and get a copy- will you buy me one too? I'll pay extra for it!
