I forgot all about this one;i have the colletion on VHS.My memory of this is not quite clear since i have not watched it in years.Perhaps it is worse than i reamember but i just remember Angel as a character trying too hard to be a hard-ass ,it became laughable.Still i plan on rewatching this again just for laughs. Thanks for reminding me of this awful but stiil enjoyable garbage.

P.S.I remember buying another piece of garbage at the same time called Explorer Woman Ray;i can t find it anywhere now but it was truly bad.Perhaps a future prospect to look at someday

I'm a girl. So don't call me "dude" dude.

Wow, could you be more anal? It's just an expression, good Lord. I may be the bitter grouch anymore but even I'm not that anally retentive. Take the stick out and chill out.

So I ran 'Angel Cop DVD' through Google Products search, just to see if someplace out there still had it cheap (because I'd love me some old cheesy uber-violent anime Very Happy )

Sure enough, I get a result for $4.94, and click through quickly... that's when I discover the seller is 'Excalibur Flims'- an adult online video shop. My embarrassment about ordering from such a site overran my desire for the show. Crying or Very sad

If anyone out there less cowardly than I decides to try and get a copy- will you buy me one too? I'll pay extra for it!

I did the same search and those are the vhs, not the dvd. I only found the dvd collection on Amazon and they wanted $40 something freaking dollars. I got the damn things on dvd back when I worked at Suncoast for $19.99, before discount.

edit--- I just found this link Dual, it might be of help for you.

Yes.

This DVD is a sublime piece of shit. If such a thing is possible.

I bought the Angel Cop DVD at an anime festival last year and have watched it a few times since. Crappy politics aside, as though xenophobia never occurs in other anime, it is not a bad show. Its animation is better than that of GITS: SAC in my opinion. Sure, it has its fair share of flaws such as amoral characters (once again, not unique to Angel Cop: NGE did not have a single sympathetic character either), and the metaphysical turn it takes is not necessarily my cup of tea (Akira, anyone?), but it does not deserve the bashing it has taken. If you go into it to for an uplifting, moral message, you should avoid it like the plague, and a good chunk of the rest of the genre as well. However, it delivers the goods as far as entertainment and action are concerned, and is better than much of the generic crap coming out today. And yes, I prefer it to Akira.

You know, Boomer, I think you nailed it.

The cool thing about this show is that it IS what it IS. Amoral, strange, exploitative, badly-done in some respects, what-have-you... it is still completely by and of its own logic and pathos.

It's not as botched as it is terribly singular and representative of C-level cyberpunk. Just look at the odd character interaction in and of itself... resolution doesn't exist, just anger and exploitation.

Fun times.

I get exactly the same feeling from watching Hades Project: Zerorymer for example, although that show is not as exploitative as Angel Cop, and its problems are of a different nature. Both shows are strange and off-putting because of their skewed, semi-surrealistic internal logic and darker-than-normal atmosphere. Yet they are also weirdly compelling, as if daring you to watch them again to make sure you caught all THAT. I must confess to liking these shows for the same reason, even though they are not what you would call cheerful viewing.

I think this is a reason why I still hold dear a lot of the anime I first watched when i was in high school....Wicked City, in particular, comes to mind. If I had actually watched Angel Cop back then, I might hold it in higher esteem.

I knew this anime from the hilarious review Justin did and must say thanks! The story is obviously crap to a level beyond comprehension, but it´s nice to watch and I got amazed by the animation. Surely I´d like to see that kind of visuals on a modern show, since anime turned digital, the quality of the animation and designs is very low on average.

How I´d pay for seeing this visuals on shows like blood+ or gundam seed.

I loved it, though I´ll not recommend it easly.

Thanks again!

WOW! I've never seen Angel Cop, but after reading you review I now know it's an xenophobic, ideological piece of crap that I'll thankfully never come across!

BTW could you do some other buried garbage reviews like the mindless "Soul Taker" and hentai suckfests like "Venus 5", "Tales of Tokyo", "Magic Girl Meruru", and "Battle Team Lakers"?

The DVD Perfect Collection of this series, released around 2000 or 2001, is one of the rare examples of me buying an anime blind and thoroughly regretting it. It tries to be a bad-ass cyberpunk tale, but like Justin suggests, it only gets the "bad" part right - especially the dub. (Justin, I'm surprised you didn't mention how particularly awful Freya was in English.)

Take this critique as a warning more than a suggestion.

This is Keith Burgess formerly of Manga Entertainment and it was not one of the shining moments of DVD releases and like some of you before I started working for them I saw the VHS and was damn this is awesome until I really saw what we missed. And there was a post about the Mad Bull DVD that never happened, I apologize for that since I wanted as much as the next person. Again in no way would it be considered epic, but grenades in the pubic hair has it's place.

This happened to be in a collection of VHS tapes I bought on eBay a while back - not for this title, but for a couple of others that didn't seem to have a DVD release. Angel Cop: The Collection. So I finally sat down and watched it the other night (what the heck, it's better than anything on Cartoon Network!).

My impression is while it starts strong, it's like they threw a bunch of plots into a bowl and stirred it up and whatever came out is what you got. There's a mad scientist, Robocop, Charlie McGee from Firestarter (Freya) and her dad (Asura, with a makeover right out of an 80s hair metal band), political conspiracy, a tough elite cop unit just like we got in Ghost In The Shell, and lots more. By the end of it it was hard to believe I was watching the same show.

But for me, the single, laugh my butt off fall out of the chair moment is towards the end, when Raiden, spoiler[ after having suffered some damage fighting Lucifer, fixes the gear on his arm... by wrapping it up with what looks like duct tape !!! ]

Sorry to bring up this old thread, but no one had mentioned that... overall, I just thought this had too many elements mixed into too little space - it tries to be too much, to appeal to too many people maybe. Most of the other criticisms I agree with, too, the dialogue in places is just (bleeping) bad. But if you have 2 1/2 hours you can afford to lose, it's worth watching just for the things that are unintentionally funny. That bit where Freya turns "But I Must Punish You" ... and the way her face changes... wait, is this a horror movie too?

AC was great for a guilty pleasure as were Baoh and MD Geist.Yes, I own the Manga version, however disapointed that the controversial dialog was left on the cutting floor. Crying or Very sad the uncensored version was upped a week ago for those who are a wee bit curious.
