There has been X-men doujinshi in Japan, however, while Marvel is willing to experiment with a wide variety of comics starring their characters, I don't think we'll ever see them make actual pornographic comics featuring their characters [despite how skimpy some costumes or skeevy some art might get].

In terms of gay and lesbian characters however, there's been lots of them in X-men, such as Mystique, Destiny, Northstar, among others.....

I'll buy this just for the novelty.

LOL, totally would buy this just for the novelty. I love X-men, and I love Fruits Basket/Ouran High School... I'd buy it just to see what they would do with it! And I kind of liked it when X-men went all manga-y for a while--Bachalo is possibly my favorite comic book artist (well, tied with Jhonen Vasquez).

"X-Men meets Fruits Basket or Ouran High School Host Club""

-facepalm-

Well, can't be any worse than Ultimate X-men under that crazy goat licking Millar. I just hope Colossus isn't gay like in Ultimate. Bring in Northstar and other gay mutants, they'd be stupid not to, but please leave in the Kitty and Colossus relationship. Fans older than I am loved that relationship. Hell, look as Joss Whedon. I was so pissed when they took that away from Ultimate X-men.

I also wonder the publishing format. With Del Ray, I'm guessing the graphic novel format. I still refuse to say manga, because in Japan you have the magazines and they're still first released in periodical. Never mind there's no Japanese artists involved in this. (What's the word for comics in Indonesia?)

Still, this is a good sign. A friend commented that X-men was often a high school drama and a soap opera anyway. Just you had superpowers. The trouble is, it's often been that way. Plus Marvel has had books like that, teen drama. it's just that manga fans turn their nose up at anything Marvel and DC. (Just like some US comic fans stupidly did and still do to manga.) Marvel's banging their head against the wall trying to figure how to break the ice. Hopefully this will help.

Then there's "a collaborative series centered on the self-healing fan-favorite X-Men character Wolverine; details were sparse. Anthony Johnston will handle writing duties, and no artist for the title was announced."

If you can tell from my avatar there, I'm surely hoping it's another Tsutomu Nihei Wolverine comic. Though maybe Terada? Asamiya? I know Marvel's worked with them before.

Now, now, let's not get all jumpy before we've seen the finished product- for all we know, these mangas might be the best things to come out of the American comics industry in years. And even if it doesn't, I, like several posters here, will damned well buy it for the novelty.

That being said, the thought of a Tamaki Suoh-like Cyclops is a bucketworth of lulz. Laughing

That is possibly the strangest mash-up I've seen in a while.

To me, it sounds like a comparison made by someone who has never read a shoujo manga in his life, and who just grabbed the names of two popular titles at random.

Hey, Archie meets The Punisher is one of the finest pieces of comic art anywhere.

Though really it was an awesome meeting of worlds.

Actually, from what little I know of Ouran High School Host Club, it does sound kinda like that. Isn't that about a girl amongst guys? Though in that I think she cross dresses? A male friend actually has some female friends of him talk him into it and I saw some as he watched it.

Given that X-men is about teens with wierd powers that often interfere with relationships and cause angst who go to a secretive boarding school, the comparisons to Fruits Basket [wierd powers+angst], and Ouran [wierd boarding school] for a shojo-styled version of X-men would be pretty apt (and as the two most popular shojo titles at the moment, kind of stupid for Marvel not to compare it to, to give people a rough idea of what market and mood they're aiming for)..... add in a plucky heroine who the reader can relate to [Kitty Pryde could pretty much be inserted as the lead of a shojo manga with no changes at all. Even with her deadly ninja skills!].

Sprinkle with a pre-existing fascination with Japan from Kitty's creator [Claremont had his characters visit Japan during his original 14 year run as often as the Savage Land, and subsequent writers followed... as I linked to before, her first solo series was set in Japan, some 25 years ago], and Wolverine's constant association with Japan [his (now dead) wife and adopted daughter are both japanese, and much of his solo adventures take place in Asia], and it's not that big of a jump.

[on a tangent, Marvel has used many Japanese artists in the past 10 years, and have a lot of published and unpublished material resulting from these collaborations, including an unpublished series Andi Watson and Slayer's artist Tommy Ohstuka finished remaking 50's romance comic Millie the Model as a shojo Tennis manga (I wish they'd get around to putting that out. And the Quest GN they keep soliciting but putting back in the vault). I imagine we could see one on the Wolverine series, though who ends up drawing it probably depends on who ends up appealing the most to the editors (and having an artist whose an english speaker probably helps things, though Marvel deals with many Latin American and European artists who don't speak much english either way) and whose available. Then there's the fact that some japanese artists they deal with like the PowerPack revamp's GuriHiru and Exile's artist Mizuki Sakakibara prefer working on colour boks Smile]

....... actually, yes.

http://comics.org/covers.lasso?SeriesID=21955

It was called Marvel Mega Morphs, and had an accompanying comic and toyline, complete with Hulk-themed mecha, which Hulk piloted. Basically, Marvel-themed Transformers. Circa 2005 [mind you, Marvel also made Spiderman and X-men mecha toys in the mid 90's. And there's always been the Sentinels in X-men since the 60's, albeit evil Giant Robots. Which lead to a popular series from Udon Studio and Marvel 5 or so years ago.]

[also, on a note on Marvel Shojo if Marvel compared it to say, a more angst-ridden shojo series like "Angel Sanctuary", we'd be getting a 25 volume Rogue/Gambit angstfest. Which probably wouldn't be too far removed from the current, 10+ year long Rogue/Gambit angstfest. "Remy, ah can touch you now! Oh wait, you're evil! And my lesbian Mom's trying to interfere, though I'm not sure if she's good, or evil this time.....".....repeat! Fangirl hordes intake!]

No that sounds pretty silly to me. It seems pretty typical shojo though. Though I think I'd rather see it as a coed boarding school. I think the different love triangles would be much more interesting coming out of that kind of situation.

I'll at least have to take a look at this when it comes out though.

See, the boarding school angle would make much more sense to me. But "X-Men Xavier's School Host Club" sounds...horrific, honestly. If they're really going in the direction of Fruits Basket and OHSHC, it's not going to BE X-Men anymore, at all. They're certainly aiming for an entirely different audience. I'm not sure if it will work though.

I really don't think it will be Ouran but with cross dressing X-men instead...

Far more likely will be Xavier's school for the Gifted having an all male student group except Kitty. Other female characters have been mentioned just not 100%'d yet, it wouldn't surprise me if Storm or Jean Grey are teachers like in the Movies. Likely it will be an angst ridden tale of Mutants being ostracised and Kitty feeling even more so through a lack of female companions.
