| I just hope it looks better than the silly "cel over 3D" of the 2004 movie. That turned me off right away. I mean, that had to be some of the best 3D backgrounds ever made, and then the shiny cel characters just ruined it for me. |

Well, I've enjoyed both of the animated installments of Appleseed thus far (in fact I feel that the 2004 movie stands up as a fun piece under multiple viewings) but I'm also unabashedly a fan of anything with cyberpunk trappings, giant firearms, and no sign of the post-Eva main character breakdown.
I'll definitely be picking up Ex Machina, and quite honestly I think there's not a thing in the world wrong with wanting more stuff like Masamune Shirow's creations and less stuff aping Anno. |

First, I will be getting this. I enjoyied the first movie very much, and I even liked the cell idea, as it was one of the things that made it seem less like a video game and more like anime. If I wanted video game I would play my XBOX or pop in Spirits Within.
Well it is as I feared. Feels like a video game. <sigh>
Regardless it is Shirow(semi-story wise), and I do enjoy his stuff quite a bit, so this not being a buy for me is really out of the question.
I know there is already an argument going on here. I'm not really going to involve in, but I will throw this out there. Why must any movie to be considered good, it must also be considered deep?
Lawrence of Arabia was and is a great film, yet I wouldn't call it deep. Or say a movie like Unforgiven.
Anyway, I guess I don't understand all this pretentiousness. |

| I don't get the issue with Appleseed looking like a game, considering Shirow himself contributed chara designs for a video game for Horned Owl for the PS. |

What does that have to do with this movie at all? How does that even follow?
You never cease to amaze me with your random connections to unrelated things, Daniel. |

| My point is that if a Shirow-based game was good enough then, why is it bad, if it's done in a motion picture style? |

Because you're not playing a game anymore. Game graphics are acceptable in a game where gameplay is the main attraction. They don't cut it in a passive medium like a movie. |

I could see it in a movie if it's being based off a game. To give fans a familiar feel in a way. That obvious is not the case with this movie. |

That would be another Oscar worthy title there right? |

Come on dude, take a look at Advent Children.
Now take a look at FF7.
See the difference? Thats game art too. Not even actual graphics which look far worse.
Now of course I admit that is due largely to the time difference between the two. But really, I doubt you could find me a recent game that looks the same as Advent Children either.
The point is that you're saying: "If it works in a game why can't it work in film?" It just doesn't work that way. Its apples and oranges. They are two very different things. |
