How's this for a predicament? I already received my copy and it is damaged and will not play! I bought it from DD and it looks like they and everyone else have already taken them off their shelves, so I'm wondering if they will give me my money back as most places say they will only replace the item. I'd like to have a replacement though, so we'll see what they say when I contact them tomorrow.
Talk about bad luck! |

This probably didn't get noticed sooner because a lot of people don't bother to check the age ratings. I wouldn't have noticed it myself had I not already had that issue in mind after running into it with my Step Up Love Story/Futari Ecchi review two weeks earlier. Frankly, giving this one a TV-MA is an overreaction, since it doesn't really have any sexual references or behavior; 16+ would, I think, have been more appropriate. |
Considering that they gave Kiminozo a TV14 rating .... Makes you kind of wonder what is going on here. |

That's true I guess. But still it feels funny calling this a "seasonal item", ya gotta give me that one. I mean it has Santa in the title sure, but the content is good for any season. And the spirit of this is not going to make anyone decide not to jump off any bridges. Although it may make some consider that an option.
No I am not ragging on anyone that likes this.
All I am saying is they must be pretty sure it will sell sooo much better at (before)Christmas time to wait a whole year. I guess I just don't see it. Not for "mature","semi-mature" "cartoons" anyway. I'm not saying they're wrong, I just don't see it, thats all. |

| I'm heading to the store to buy this title right now. Forget waiting a year for their mistake. |

| Forgive me if this question has already been posed towards everyone here. But what I really want to know is who is really going to care about this title's re-release (besides Akamatsu fans) after a year long delay? That's something for Funimation to think about. Who knows, they probably are already. |

| I seriously have to question the wisdom of this recall. Granted the title isn't exactly a masterpiece, but are people really so uptight about a little nudity so as to demand a Mature rating? I can think of a LOT of anime titles that were put on shelves with a 13+ that had nudity here and there.. why is this an issue all of a sudden? |

I think it's very smart and proactive on Funi's part to recall it. It shows a proactive approach to trying to keep the ratings fair and accurate for parents. At least that's a nice media spin they can use. Whatever the reasons it is smarter to recall them. However, waiting a full year to release it again....why? That doesn't make any sense at all really. Plenty of people watch holiday movies and shows well after Christmas during the winter season. Plus by next year there may not be any demand for it, as if there's a whole lot now to begin with. |

That's just the problem. It's too late into the Christmas shopping period to re-release it this year, and they just might not bother releasing it next year since the demand for a second printing will be way low.
As far as accuracy is concerned, why are they using TV rating codes? Considering anime which is clearly intended to be 10+ might have a little nudity, and just because of that be stuck with an adult rating even though the show was clearly intended to be viewed by older children as well. All the other anime DVD producers here in R1 use their own rating codes for just that reason. Playing by the American TV rules book just doesn't give unedited anime a fair shot (why so much of it ends up sadly edited when it's actually broadcast, for instance).
I haven't done much more than briefly preview "My Santa" from "other" online sources, so I haven't actually seen it from start to finish, but unless there's some hardcore sex scene I missed in my skimming of the program, I am hard pressed to believe there's any content in there that's any worse than 13+, this isn't Bad Santa people, come on.. |

You could try contacting Funirepblue who I believe has an account on these forums somewhere, or funhack on the FUNi forums as they may be able to help you out. |

james039, I'm pretty sure Funimation is applying this rating themselves. They're using "TV-MA" because they decided that's what it should be. They could use a "16+" or "17+" rating, but they they must feel consumers are comfortable with TV-related ones.
It's not like someone else rated it, so they're not "playing by another rulebook" or anything. |

If they're going to be in touch with the retailers anyways, I would assume this would be easier, and save them money. |
True, they could do this.....but keep in mind the retailers are under no obligation to carry this out. Most probably would out of fear for the reputations of their retail store/chain, but some might not bother and all it takes is one complaining customer to cause a media backlash that could potentially damage Funi's image. |

It's an older series, the fansubs have been out for a while, and basically no one aside from Akamatsu fans probably have ever heard of it or would like it.
I doubt Funimation was expecting Fullmetal Alchemist sales figures to begin with. They were probably just hoping a fraction of the Negima! buyers would pick it up. The sales would probably be about the same next year as this year.
On an unrelated note, this recall continues the pattern of anything I saw fansubbed suffering some sort of problem in it's R1 release. (Although not everyone would agree with me about what constitutes a problem.)
I apologize for cursing this anime's release. |

I guess the 2007 copies that got out are going to be collectors editions. |
I would think so... I'm a little surprised. I thought FUNimation was usually good in self-rating. Imagine the outrage if they had rated Witchblade TV-PG or even TV-14... bare nekkid asses & half-covered boobies?! For Shame! |
Or better yet, TV-Y7...
"Hey kids, gather around! We're gonna watch a fine and dandy action-packed and educational cartoon! It's called Witchblade!"
*hits play*
"Wow, what action, what education, what--oh...oh my..."
Honestly, I've never heard of this show until reading this story. If anything, I kind of want to track it down now. What accidentally clever marketing, Funi. |

Shiroi Hane, thank you for the suggestion. I hope that they received my pm - I got a very, very nice pm from them before I even had the chance to send my query. If it's in my 'outbox' is that sufficient that I sent it? There's something called a 'sentbox' and I don't know what that is, very confusing.
Still, what a truly nice person and I'm very grateful. If all of Funimation is as nice as that .... |

Okay, granted that I've never seen My Santa, but from the reviews I've read, I think recalling it was a wise decision. Maybe not for a "TV-MA" rating, but it shouldn't be "TV-PG" either.
If Funimation had gotten away with their mistake (which they most likely could have), the parents buying Christmas presents for their kids could easily be put off by this. Someone give me a single reason this could be thought of as somthing for adults at first glance; it's animation (which in most of the english-speaking world is thought of as somthing for "kids only"), it mentions santa, the cover art doesn't have anything objectionable, and with the lowered age rating it seems like an okay thing to give to a child.
I'm not trying to be completely one-sided either; the anime fans who know what the show's about and who've already waited 2 years (forgive me if I'm wrong; I thougt in Japan this was intended to be for december of 2005) for a U.S. release are getting completely screwed here. But keep in mind the fact that most of us have anime piled up on our DVR's, shelves, hard drives etc. that we also want to watch but don't have time to. I seriously doubt one's craving for anime will be desroyed by this. And let's not forget, this title is getting released a year from now; it will be possible to see it legally. A year sounds like a long wait, but who wants somthing like this in Feburary or March? The next time there will actually be a substantial demand for this item, it'll be avaliable. |
