I think this is the right move by Funi- they get to look good for taking the moral high ground, and benefit from that wonderful burst of attention all media gets when there's a lil' controversy tied in.
anime newbie a: "Man, Christmas 2007 was a bust. I wonder if there's any good anime for this year... huh? What's 'My Santa'?"
anime newbie b: "Dude! That's the thing that got recalled last year because they rated it wrong and it was too sexy to leave on the shelves! Let's buy and see what the big deal is!"
Considering the crappy reviews it's been getting, curiosity over whether it was "really that bad" is a good way to get some sales. |

... They are both Akamatsu works... and My Santa came out first... |

This probably didn't get noticed sooner because a lot of people don't bother to check the age ratings. I wouldn't have noticed it myself had I not already had that issue in mind after running into it with my Step Up Love Story/Futari Ecchi review two weeks earlier. Frankly, giving this one a TV-MA is an overreaction, since it doesn't really have any sexual references or behavior; 16+ would, I think, have been more appropriate. |
What, really? I mean, I would've sworn that this would be a hentai, except it's not as explicit...there's still breasts and a lot of sexual content, so I would definitely give it an MA rating, unless there are two different versions that I obviously don't know about... |

Maaaybe they planned it all this way. That would really be sneaky. I really don't think that's the case but you are right, maybe it will somehow work to their advantage.
I noticed the banner ads for this title are still running. I wonder if they can cancel the ads and run another title or if once purchased they just keep going until their run is over. I suppose having ads out for a product that's no longer available will just potentially add to the confusion. |

| I've seen My Santa and it does NOT deserve a M (17+) rating. I'd consider it a 13+, since there wasn't anything sexual about the nudity. |

I think you're getting the two titles confused. The bold part is referring to My Santa, not Futari Ecchi, which certainly should have had a TV-MA (it's far, far more explicit than My Santa) but didn't. |

| Managed to place an order via Amazon.com. Hopefully they honor the order and haven't pulled it yet. |

I'd give it a 13+ for the "sexy" thing and a 5+ for the plot :p |

I actually showed this as a Christmas treat last night at our anime soc (I hadn't seen it myself, had just got the DVD, and did actually go off the rating on the case...)
We haven't had such a good laugh in a long time!! (although I ended up blushing a lot...) |

I was a bit surprised they waited until mid-December to release a holiday title in the first place (instead of around Thanksgiving). A considerable amount of anime fans order their DVDs online, and with shipping time in consideration, well, that's cutting it pretty close. I don't know if the timing would have made any difference in the long run but it's too bad that those who didn't pick it up won't be able to until another year.

That's one of the first things that crossed my mind. It really seems like such a waste to ship them all back and re-package them. |

I thought of this as well.Stickers or labels are a swifter fix than pulling stock.Pulling stock is a poor decision on Funimations part IMO.Maybe they take pride in their box art and rating system. |

*blinks.* hmm...it seems that my post was edited, for what reason is unknown to me.
o_o; but yeah...All I was saying that I found that really odd that the rating (FE) was less than what it should be. >.>;;
As for My Santa, isn't it somewhat similar to Love Hina? (some recycled themes)

| For those of you interested, I placed my order for this on Best Buy and just got my confirmation that it shipped. Seems that the word isn't spreading all that fast to the retailers that this thing has been recalled. I was on the fence about whether or not to get this, but jumped on it when I saw the announcement. It probably really is some elaborate ploy to sell more copies . . . or maybe not. But, if it is, I fell for it hook line and sinker. |

I tried to order it drom the store and couldn't. None of the stores had it in, and the guy I talked too said that his store hadn't even received their copies yet. I'll see if my mother will order it offline for me, but I feel if they're going to make us wait another whole year they'd better be willing to bring that price down to $9.99.
Sadly, I doubt i'll ever see this title again.
If anyone finds one pm me. I'd be willing to do that money order thing.
And yeah, i'm a big fan of Akamatsu's work. |
