No, I agee with both you and Theron about the "C" grade for the music. The opening and closing songs are pretty good, but I thought the background music was sort of meh. |
meh.... a "B-" would be more appropriate. BGM is alright...
.
here's what the rating scale should be like:
A+ : Exquisite
A : Excellent
A- : Very Good
B+ : Good
B : Above average
B- : Decent
C+ : Fair
C : Par
C- : So-so
D+ : Subpar
D : Weak
D- : Bad
F+ : Awful
F : Worse
F- : Worst!
.
.
How's that?...

Looking at your scale, I still think the "C" grade is fine for the music. Really, "C" is not a bad grade. But I don't think anyone is jumping to buy the soundtrack after hearing just the music on this disc. The only standout song is the one playing in the cafe based on Pachelbel's Canon (I say "based on" because it sounds like it's just aping the chords). |

Not that I have any problems with cutesy anime about cutesy girls. That's why we have h-anime. But the "uguu~" and the "auuu~," the "moe sound effects..." Japanese vocal sound effects during an English dub.
They just had to introduce some secondary male lead who's a pathetic loser. (And he's voiced by Greg Ayers. DUDE.)
I'm making this official: Moe anime is a waste of time and money; shows like that should stay in Japan where they belong. |
You know what it is though, most people don't.You are past the casual level. It may be disgustingly cute but it's one of those anime series that is for a select few.
The one thing I'll add is in current anime, most characters look toothless. Some two toned, maw anime.Kanon has plenty of it.-Off topic-(I don't think I saw a single tooth in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.) | Actually, you can see Tsuruya's tooth pretty much all the time in Haruhi.
I'm personally perfectly fine with the toothless thing as long as the angle is right. As in, if we were to look "up" into the character's mouth then teeth should plainly be seen.
About the music: I think C is a perfectly fair grade for the music, at least for the first few episodes. I didn't particularly like the opening or ending songs in the beginning, but late on, as some people have already said, it becomes more significant. |

I only watched the first 3 minutes of the anime before turning it off.
^^; I suppose a drama series like this isn't my thing, the only Angsty series that I even put up with (shoujo-wise) was Peach Girl. I like the manga better than the anime anyway.
I decided to read ANN's description instead. |

Kanon is a distinctly shounen romance series. I don't think it's a good comparison for shoujo romance. It's based on a hentai visual novel, and it doesn't really try to stray from that. |

| Wow... How did I miss this review? I've been checking for it every day. Meh. I'll just have to post my two cents a little late. I'm personally surprised this got as good a review as it did. I liked this show, but going back again and watching it I don't think it's that great. 'Course, I'm at a disadvantage seeing as I've watched the entire series and I know how freakin' annoying Ayu gets. I consider that the fundamental difference between Air and Kanon. Mizusu grows on you as the series develops whereas Ayu is cute for like five minutes. Until she makes you want to throw tuna at the screen every time she utters the irksome "Uguuu..." Most disagreeable. As a lead, that's probably a bad thing. |

@ the original review. Actually you're wrong about Sayuri: in both the Japanese anime and the VN she addresses herself as "Sayuri" not "I." The reason has to do with her backstory, so it makes sense that the English dub would call herself "Sayuri" in 3rd person, which is just as awkward sounding as it is in Japanese (where they leave out pronouns.)
Also Kanon does have nice relaxing BGM. Its not like air because the atmosphere is different than air: its snow and snow melting as contrasted with the summer, and tradition themes of Air.
[Mod note: Please don't necropost. Thanks. ~C] |
