Face it, some things are meant for men and some are for women. Unless they change the name from "Hello Kitty" to "Yo, Cougar!" I just don't see the appeal.

Who says the character formula needs to change? What SanRio realized is the market for guys that actually wear pink and cute things. Not only does it stick out, it attracts girls. If a guy wants to wear it, it's completely up to them.
Thinking about it, this entire uproar of "but Hello Kitty is for girls" is based completely on a gender construct where cutesy and nice is for girls, big and bad is for boys. There's people in either camp on either gender, so really, I'm surprised it took them this long. Since there are already Badtz-Maru purses and sparkly stickers. |

As a companion to an AP wire copy of this story, my local paper also printed the following:
| Quote: | | A new tactic to shame delinquent policemen in Thailand who commit misdemeanors, such as littering or coming to work late, requires them to stay in the office all day and sport an armband featuring a smiling Hello Kitty surrounded by hearts. |

Ah, yes I remember when ANN reported that. Too funny!
And it's got to tell you something. Not sure what that is, lol. But if Hello Kitty is being used as punishment in an overwhelmingly male centered work environment, then it's got to mean something. |

| Hello Kitty = the debil for men, useful as torture and punishment methods only. |

| I have a feeling this is probably more for the Japanese market than the American market. In America they will sell because guys will wear them as a joke. But in Japan, where most male fashion is androgynous anyway, I think it'll probably do decently well. |
